Go to "http://news.google.com/newspapers". When you reach this page, you will see a list of newspapers in alphabetical order. Step # 2 -- Locating a Specific Magazine and Issue For this tutorial, we have randomly chosen to search for the April 21st, 1922 edition of the California Oil Worker. At the top of the page, beneath the buttons "Search Archive" and "Search the Web," you will find a group of letters that run from A to Y. Click on the letter "C." Step # 3 -- Finding a Magazine in Alphabetical Order You will now be on a page which shows all the newspapers which begin with the letter C. If you look at the top, to the right of "The-Calhoun-Liberty Journal" and beneath "Calhoun Times," you will see the newspaper "California Oil Worker." Click on the blue link. Step # 4 -- Quickly Narrowing Down Your Search You're now on the California Oil Worker page. Look at the bottom of the page, and you will see the April 21st, 1922 edition. √ Writing about Newspaper Articles | Text Type Studies | English

17:07
#iitutor #English #TextTypeStudies https://www.iitutor.com Writing about Newspaper Articles You can write about newspaper articles in a number of ways: and not just comprehension. To fully interpret the validity, effects and techniques of a news article, you need to ask some questions. How do they Grab Attention? An article can grab attention through a headline, an image, or both. The relationship between headline and image attracts a reader through by interest or emotional response. The first line of the article is important for maintaining this interest, or getting them to ‘click’. Are they Truly Objective? This bias can be seen in any way that a journalist adds personal opinion, be it political, social, cultural, religious or ideological. While many articles are completely objective and impersonal some do indicate bias or emotion. You must analyse what effect this bias has, if any, on the trustworthiness and validity of the article, and be critical. What Sources do they Use? A good test of the trustworthiness of a news article comes from the evidence or source that a news story uses. Some are generally trustworthy such as: Government spokesperson, police, professors, scientists, the subject of the article, photographic evidence Some are less than trustworthy, such as: Witnesses, ‘a source close to’, unrecognised ‘experts’, the subject of the article, ‘man on the street’ What Kind of Story is it? Not all news stories are the same. All stories connect and attract readers in different ways. They can be humorous, scandalous, sensational, fear-mongering, heart-warming or reflective. All stories want to connect with reader in some way, and through this, they appeal directly or indirectly to emotions and interests. How does it use Language? The final question you should ask is how techniques are used, such as: Exaggerated or sensationalist choices of language Emotional or figurative language Formal or colloquial style of language in reporting Puns or rhetorical questions in headline Any distinct layout or visual choices The file name must be E06103.flv

How to write news articles - In a nutshell

02:19
How to write a news article - expert advice from Richard Hussey at RSH Copywriting - http://in.a-nut.sh/RSHCopywriting Don't miss new In a nutshell videos... subscribe by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=BEInaNutshell Find out more about this video... ........................................ How to write a news article, In a nutshell. Hello, today I want to talk to you about writing better news articles, blogs and press releases: I want you to remember three basic principles: Be relevant, Write powerful headlines, Be original What do I mean by relevance? Get attention by building your articles around the interests, ambitions and challenges of your target audience. And always ask one basic question: 'why would anybody read this?'. Think too about the business results you want to achieve - how does each article help you get there? Headlines. As David Ogilvy said: 'when you've written your headline you've spent eighty cents out of your dollar' that should tell you just how important they are. If you find good headlines hard to write, be pleased with yourself -- it shows that you understand just how important they are. Your headline has one purpose -- to grab the attention of the specific people you really want to read your content. It has to tell them: 'this article is for you', 'you're going to discover something of value'. And 'this will be a productive use of your time'. See now why headlines are more than just an afterthought? And finally, be original. If all your articles offer is the same information that people can see elsewhere, why would they want to read more of your content? What's your unique point of view? Understand your target audience, and interpret the news in a way that's relevant to them. Yes, it's a bit more work, but that's what will bring them back to your content time and again. So remember those three basic principles : Be relevant, Write powerful headlines, Be original You should then get a better return on the time you invest in your articles. ........................................ It has been described as a feeling similar to “goosebumps”, but in a very positive manner. ASMR causes the person to feel “tingles”, which is the goosebumps feeling on their skin, leading to a sleepy, calm state of mind and body. ASMR is known to have helped thousands of people fight insomnia and stress all over the world. ASMR can be triggered by various stimuli, such as specific sounds (popular triggers include scissors, page turning, plastic bag crinkles, whispering, fabric scratching etc) or visual triggers such as hand movements, examination of everyday objects, close attention, light movements and so on. Each person is triggered by very different things, but the sensation itself is the same.

Historical (and some Hysterical) Flat Earth Newspaper Articles (#4) gathered by Dean Hawk

11:52
This is the fourth in a series of old newspaper articles unearthed by Dean Hawk youtube channel. Dean discovered these gems after first hearing about flat earth. He went to his local library to research and found over a hundred articles and passed them on to be read aloud and shared. Fascinating to see how the globe theory was challenged and ridiculed and disbelieved by many people right up until very recently. This one shows Samuel Shentons' (IFERS) frustration at the lack of interest in this reappraisal of science for peoples fear of ridicule. It mentions both political leaders of England enthusiastically mocking the idea... reminds me of President Obamas' recent four attempts to ridicule the idea written into his speeches. History repeats

Finding News Articles with ProQuest Newspapers

03:13
Search the full text of thousands of newspapers simultaneously, or use advanced controls to drill down to exactly what you need to find for your research. The University of Alabama Libraries Homepage: lib.ua.edu ProQuest Newspapers (University of Alabama Libraries Login) URL: http://libdata.lib.ua.edu/login?url=https://search.proquest.com/news/advanced?accountid=14472 Transcript: Hi my name is Jon, I’m a librarian at the University of Alabama This video will demonstrate how to use the ProQuest Newspapers database to locate newspaper articles for your research. Starting at the libraries homepage [lib.ua.edu], select the Databases link from the quick menu. Locate ProQuest Newspapers under “P” on the A-Z list. This database provides full-text articles from thousands of national, regional, local, and university newspapers and newsmagazines, and coverage is updated daily. You can search for keywords or phrases, or by other parameters in the search bars and then further refine the results. Because this database is searching the full text of news articles, you should use keywords and phrases that you'd find in news writing. For some searches, searching in specific fields will greatly improve your results. For example, let’s say we want to write a paper about the effects of the tornadoes in Alabama in April 2011, and we need examples of local news coverage from that time. Just searching for tornado and Alabama and 2011 will return a lot of irrelevant results. So let’s start over, and search for “tornado” but look for articles only published in the Tuscaloosa News, which received a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the disaster. You can do this by selecting “Publication Title” from the drop down menu. If you aren’t sure of a publication’s title, you can select “Look Up Publications” under the menu tab to add a publication title to the search. Alabama gets tornadoes regularly, so our results are coming from various years, although from the date graph on the left column, it’s clear that there is a spike of stories from 2011 and 2012. You can use the sliders in the publication date graph or enter a date range to refine your results. In this example, let’s first limit to stories from 2011 using the sliders. And then further limit to April 2011. We can then order the results chronologically using the sorting drop-down menu at the top of the left column. OK, so now we have a list of stories from the Tuscaloosa News mentioning “tornado” published after April 1, 2011 The tornados occurred on April 27, so let’s scroll down past this date and find an article. Click on an article title to view the full text and record. The menu on the right gives you various export options, such as email or “save as .pdf”. You can also use the citation tool to generate a citation for the article in most major citation formats and paste it into your works cited page (just be sure to double-check it for accuracy). That’s all for now, thanks for watching. If you have further questions, you can call us [205-348-6047], text us [205-377-0920], or visit ask.lib.ua.edu to Ask-A-Librarian
