Warren Buffett on Business, Investments, Financial Markets, Economy (2013)
From an article by The New York Times: "I don't believe in dynastic wealth", he said, calling those who grow up in wealthy circumstances "members of the lucky sperm club". Buffett has written several times of his belief that, in a market economy, the rich earn outsized rewards for their talents: A market economy creates some lopsided payoffs to participants. The right endowment of vocal chords, anatomical structure, physical strength, or mental powers can produce enormous piles of claim checks (stocks, bonds, and other forms of capital) on future national output. Proper selection of ancestors similarly can result in lifetime supplies of such tickets upon birth. If zero real investment returns diverted a bit greater portion of the national output from such stockholders to equally worthy and hardworking citizens lacking jackpot-producing talents, it would seem unlikely to pose such an insult to an equitable world as to risk Divine Intervention.[121] His children will not inherit a significant proportion of his wealth. This is consistent with statements he has made in the past indicating his opposition to the transfer of great fortunes from one generation to the next.[122] Buffett once commented, "I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing".[123] In June 2006, he announced a plan to give away his fortune to charity, with 83% of it going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.[124] He pledged about the equivalent of 10 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (worth approximately US$30.7 billion as of June 23, 2006),[125] making it the largest charitable donation in history, and Buffett one of the leaders of philanthrocapitalism.[126] The foundation will receive 5% of the total each July, beginning in 2006. (Significantly, however, the pledge is conditional upon the foundation's giving away each year, beginning in 2009, an amount that is at least equal to the value of the entire previous year's gift from Buffett, in addition to 5% of the foundation's net assets.) Buffett joined the Gates Foundation's board, although he did not plan to be actively involved in the foundation's investments.[127][128] This is a significant shift from Buffett's previous statements, to the effect that most of his fortune would pass to his Buffett Foundation.[129] The bulk of the estate of his wife, valued at $2.6 billion, went to there when she died in 2004.[130] He also pledged $50-million to the Nuclear Threat Initiative, in Washington, where he began serving as an adviser in 2002.[131] In 2006, he auctioned his 2001 Lincoln Town Car[132] on eBay to raise money for Girls, Inc.[133] In 2007, he auctioned a luncheon with himself that raised a final bid of $650,100 for the Glide Foundation.[134] Later auctions raised $2,110,100,[135][136] $1.68 million[137] and $3,456,789. The winners traditionally dine with Buffett at New York's Smith and Wollensky steak house. The restaurant donates at least $10,000 to Glide each year to host the meal.[138] In a letter to Fortune Magazine's website in 2010 Buffett remarked: My luck was accentuated by my living in a market system that sometimes produces distorted results, though overall it serves our country well... I've worked in an economy that rewards someone who saves the lives of others on a battlefield with a medal, rewards a great teacher with thank-you notes from parents, but rewards those who can detect the mispricing of securities with sums reaching into the billions. In short, fate's distribution of long straws is wildly capricious. [139] This statement was made as part of a joint proposal with Gates to encourage other wealthy individuals to pool parts of their fortunes for charitable purposes. On December 9, 2010, Buffett, Bill Gates, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, signed a promise they called the "Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge", in which they promised to donate to charity at least half of their wealth over time, and invited others among the wealthy to follow suit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Buffett

Financial Markets and Land Speculation
Financial Markets and Land Speculation (02/15) The Seminar is part of an international campaign focusing on the role of the pension fund TIAA and includes social movements and scholars from Brazil, Canada, Germany and the United States looking at financial markets, land and food systems. Financialization is leading to new forms of land grabbing, with heavy involvement by pension funds and other financial corporations that began targeting farmland around the world after the emergence of the financial crisis in 2007-2008. Rural communities in the Global North and in the Global South, as well as workers in the Global North whose pensions are invested in land grabbing, are both impacted and can work together to stop this trend. The event follows the 1st International Seminar on Land Grabbing, hosted and sponsored by the Center for Place, Culture and Politics in November of 2015, with the launching of the report “Foreign pension funds and land grabbing in Brazil”, available in Portuguese, English and French: http://www.social.org.br/index.php/pub/cartilhas-portugues/188-a-empresa-radar-s-a-e-a-especulacao-com-terras-no-brasil.html[social.org.br] https://www.grain.org/article/entries/5336-foreign-pension-funds-and-land-grabbing-in-brazil[grain.org] https://www.grain.org/article/entries/5337-fonds-de-pension-etrangers-et-accaparement-des-terres-au-bresil[grain.org] SPEAKERS: Maria Luisa Mendonça (Moderator) – Visiting Scholar, Center for Place, Culture and Politics, CUNY Graduate Center Fabio Pitta – Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos (Network for Social Justice and Human Rights, Brazil) Isolete Wichinieski – Comissão Pastoral da Terra (Pastoral Land Commission, Brazil) Devlin Kuyek – GRAIN (Canada) David Harvey – Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography and Director of Research, Center for Place, Culture and Politics, CUNY Graduate Center This event is sponsored by the Center for Place, Culture and Politics at the CUNY Graduate Center.

The 2008 Financial Crisis: Crash Course Economics #12
Today on Crash Course Economics, Adriene and Jacob talk about the 2008 financial crisis and the US Goverment's response to the troubles. So, all this starts with home mortgages, and the use of mortgages as an investment instrument. For years, it seemed like the US housing market would go up and up. Like a bubble or something. Economies are fake because you don’t know what is real value or smoke. What to do might surprise you as to play along is not such a bad idea. Something that is easy to forget is that the current financial environment is rigged and not many discuss it because it is done so in a legal way. In this article, I want to quickly explain what has been going on in the financial environment over the last decade and how natural market forces are distorted in order to increase asset prices and enable the economy we live in to continue as it for at least a while. I’ll conclude with what do in relation to what is going on in order to improve our financial wellbeing in the long term. The trigger for market rigging The trigger for market rigging is not the 2009 great recession, it is simply debt and lots of it. Total public debt as a percentage of GDP increased from levels around 30% in the 1970s to the current 103%.

In FX; - USD Checklist was positive, DXY 96.70 at the time of recording, ended the month around 97.50 - Highlighted GBP as a potential long at 1.2772, which rallied towards a high of 1.3175 later in the month. - Anticipated continued weakness in the Canadian Dollar (USDCAD 1.3118), which fell as much as 2% versus the Greenback in November (eventually bottoming in late December around 1.37). Securities include stocks and bonds, and precious metals. The term "market" is sometimes used for what are more strictly exchanges, organizations that facilitate the trade in financial securities, e.g., a stock exchange or commodity exchange. This may be a physical location (like the NYSE, BSE, LSE, JSE) or an electronic system (like NASDAQ). Much trading of stocks takes place on an exchange; still, corporate actions (merger, spinoff) are outside an exchange, while any two companies or people, for whatever reason, may agree to sell stock from the one to the other without using an exchange. Trading of currencies and bonds is largely on a bilateral basis, although some bonds trade on a stock exchange, and people are building electronic systems for these as well, similar to stock exchanges..

Andrew W. Lo on "Adaptive Markets: Financial Evolution at the Speed of Thought"
Evening Lecture/Symposia Series Andrew W. Lo on "Adaptive Markets: Financial Evolution at the Speed of Thought" Wednesday, January 24, 2018 | 05:30 PM to 07:00 PM Event presented by the Museum of American Finance, the Fordham University Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis and Bloomberg for Education Half of all Americans have money in the stock market, yet economists can't agree on whether investors and markets are rational and efficient, as modern financial theory assumes, or irrational and inefficient, as behavioral economists believe―and as financial bubbles, crashes and crises suggest. This is one of the biggest debates in economics and the value or futility of investment management and financial regulation hang on the outcome. Andrew Lo cuts through this debate with a new framework, the Adaptive Markets Hypothesis, in which rationality and irrationality coexist. Drawing on psychology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence and other fields, Professor Lo shows that the theory of market efficiency isn't wrong but merely incomplete. When markets are unstable, investors react instinctively, creating inefficiencies for others to exploit. His new paradigm explains how financial evolution shapes behavior and markets at the speed of thought―a fact revealed by swings between stability and crisis, profit and loss, and innovation and regulation. About the Speaker Andrew W. Lo is the Charles E. and Susan T. Harris Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management and director of the MIT Laboratory for Financial Engineering. He has published numerous articles in finance and economics journals, and has authored several books including Adaptive Markets: Financial Evolution at the Speed of Thought, The Econometrics of Financial Markets, A Non-Random Walk Down Wall Street, Hedge Funds: An Analytic Perspective and The Evolution of Technical Analysis. His awards include the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, the Paul A. Samuelson Award, the American Association for Individual Investors Award, the Graham and Dodd Award and numerous other awards and honors. A new approach to financial market volatility analysis en/fr
A Richter scale for the financial market: is it possible? How to determine magnitude of schok in a stock market? This video proposes a new approach to financial market volatility analysis. Link for the article: https://mpra.ub.uni-muenchen.de/81980/10/1383-4820-1-PB.pdf http://www.kspjournals.org/index.php/JEB/article/view/1383 Subs. I would like throughout this video to share with you a method that has the potential to better fit the risks we observe in the financial markets and to sound the alarm at necessary moments. There are many methods for analyzing stock market trends (Risk, volatility, overview ...), unfortunately, these methods are for the most quite complex to use. Of course, they do not allow us to identify the risk that characterizes the stock market as a whole. This method, which I propose, does not stand for All-Problems-Solver, but on the contrary, it contributes to the development of our imperfect and incomplete science. The idea come from the theory of social choice. The problems of choice and voting are as old as the world. One wonders: How to choose rationally and optimally. What we must know is that since the 18th century, two methods of voting (Borda & Condorcet) claim to be able to bring solutions to this problem. But we just have to look around for us to understand that it does not work really well. Moreover, a great contemporary economist (Arrow) has to demonstrate that there is no method of rational voting which can not be manipulated. (This is not exactly what he said, but the mathematical formulation is too long to explain). So it was by interpreting one of these methods and studying how to respect the Arrow’s conditions that I reached the method which I am going to present to you. The method is simple: I have a dynamic weighting system. The order defining the entry on each floor is dictated by factors such as risk aversion if it concerns investors, the profitability of the asset if it is index, etc. . See my article in the Journal of Economic Bibliography for more details. Subsequently, through a statistical regression, I defined a scale that will enable me to quantify the magnitude of an exogenous shock or of the temporal evolution. Like most units of measurement, this scale is relative. Just need to calculate the magnitude days after days or hour after hour. this being based on a day of the year (or hour) where the market was stable. By way of example, the 2008 crisis could be taken as a base point. If, by measuring the magnitude of the shocks on the state of the portfolio representing each market (NYSE, ...) or the Main Index (CAC 40. .) we find ourselves with a shock of a magnitude of 80%. (When the bubble is very large and ready to explode). Thus, when the magnitude of the shocks approaches 60-70%, it will be necessary to deflate the speculative bubble or to proceed to regulations. Too much blah blah, let's move on to the application. Suppose a Mr X, trader has a portfolio of XXXX assets. the 4X Index consists of 4 securities. Let us suppose this situation to be the stable state of the market (stationary). I inserted data randomly into the software. It can be observed that over time the red curve moves away from the stable state. Assets 3 and 4 appear to be very risky or unprofitable. Mr X observes how the XXXX index behaves and he can either decide to change or not the composition of its portfolio. When the magnitude of the shock becomes critical, regulators know that it is time to act and where to act.

SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Financial econometrics is the subject of research that has been defined as the application of statistical methods to financial market data. Financial econometrics is a branch of financial economics, in the field of economics. Areas of study include capital markets, financial institutions, corporate finance and corporate governance. Topics often revolve around asset valuation of individual stocks, bonds, derivatives, currencies and other financial instruments. It differs from other forms of econometrics because the emphasis is usually on analyzing the prices of financial assets traded at competitive, liquid markets. People working in the finance industry or researching the finance sector often use econometric techniques in a range of activities – for example, in support of portfolio management and in the valuation of securities. Financial econometrics is essential for risk management when it is important to know how often 'bad' investment outcomes are expected to occur over future days, weeks, months and years.

The Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets: U.S. Finance (2008)
Frederic Stanley "Rick" Mishkin (born January 11, 1951) is an American economist and professor at the Columbia Business School. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 2006 to 2008. Mishkin was born in New York City to Sidney Mishkin (b. 1913, d. 1991) and Jeanne Silverstein. His late father endowed the Sidney Mishkin Gallery at Baruch College of the City University of New York. He attended Fieldston School and received a B.S. (1973) and Ph.D. (1976), both in economics, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1999, he received an honorary professorship from the People's (Renmin) University of China. He is married to Sally Hammond, a landscape designer. They have a son, Matthew, and a daughter, Laura. Mishkin has been a full professor at Columbia Business School since 1983. He held the A. Barton Hepburn Professorship of Economics from 1991 to 1999, when he was appointed Alfred Lerner Professor of Banking and Financial Institutions. He was also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (1980 to 2006) and a senior fellow at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's Center for Banking Research (2003 to 2006). Dr. Mishkin was also a professor at the University of Chicago (1976-1983), a visiting professor at Northwestern University (1982-1983), and visiting professor at Princeton University (1990-1991).[2] From 1994 to 1997 Mishkin was Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and an Associate Economist of the Federal Open Market Committee of the Federal Reserve System. Dr. Mishkin was the editor of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Economic Policy Review and later served on that journal's editorial board. From 1997 to 2006, he also was an academic consultant to and served on the Economic Advisory Panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Mishkin has been an academic consultant to the Board of Governors and a visiting scholar at the Board's Division of International Finance.[2] Mishkin has been a consultant to the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, as well as to numerous central banks throughout the world. He was also a member of the International Advisory Board to the Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea and an adviser to the Institute for Monetary and Economic Research at the Bank of Korea.[2] In 2006 Mishkin co-authored a report called Financial Stability in Iceland.[3] The report maintained that Iceland's economic fundamentals were strong. The report was commissioned by the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce in response to critical coverage of the Icelandic economy and certain Icelandic companies in the international business media.[2] Mishkin was paid $124,000 to co-author the report.[4] Two and a half years later, Iceland experienced a spectacular financial collapse. According to the documentary film Inside Job, the title of the report was changed to Financial Instability in Iceland on Mishkin's curriculum vitae (CV). Mishkin's CV was later corrected to list the report with its original title.[5] Mishkin wrote a note published on October 6, 2010 at the Financial Times' blog [6] explaining his participation in the documentary Inside Job. The director of Inside Job, Charles Ferguson, responded to Mishkin's note at the same blog.[7] Mishkin was confirmed as a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve on September 5, 2006 to fill an unexpired term ending January 31, 2014.[2] On May 28, 2008, he submitted his resignation from the Board of Governors, effective August 31, 2008, in order to revise his textbook and resume his teaching duties at Columbia Business School. Mishkin's research focuses on monetary policy and its impact on financial markets and the aggregate economy. He is the author of more than fifteen books and has published numerous articles in professional journals and books. Mishkin has served on the editorial board of the American Economic Review and has been an associate editor at the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives. He is currently an associate editor (member of the editorial board) at the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Macroeconomics and Monetary Economics Abstracts, Journal of International Money and Finance, International Finance, and Finance India.[9] Mishkin is the author of the textbook Economics of Money, Banking, and Financial Markets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederic_Mishkin

'Financial markets with limited arbitrageurs' Prof. Francesco Franzoni
Inaugural Lecture - November 28, 2013 Classical financial theories are based on the assumption that the forces of arbitrage govern the behavior of financial markets. According to this view, arbitrageurs get rid of all inefficiencies and prices are formed rationally. Recent events suggest that, at the very least, the reality is more complicated than that. Professional investors may not be in the position to bring markets back to equilibrium and, at times, they even contribute to generate deviations from correct prices. In his lecture, prof. Franzoni presents an overview of his empirical research on the role of institutional investors in financial markets. Hedge funds, ETFs, Private Equity Funds, and Mutual Funds are shown to behave in a way that is consistent with theories that postulate limits to arbitrageurs’ ability to promptly restore equilibrium in financial markets. A Crisis of Beliefs: investor psychology and financial fragility
The collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 caught markets and regulators by surprise. Although the government rushed to rescue other financial institutions from a similar fate after Lehman, it could not prevent the deepest recession in postwar history. In this lecture, Andrei Shleifer makes us rethink the financial crisis and the nature of economic risk. It reveals how our beliefs shape financial markets, lead to expansions of credit and leverage, and expose the economy to major risks. Using the latest research in psychology and behavioral economics, Shleifer presents a new theory of belief formation that explains why the financial crisis came as such a shock to so many people—and how financial and economic instability persist. Andrei Shleifer is John L. Loeb Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard and a Ph.D. from MIT. Before coming to Harvard in 1991, he has taught at Princeton and the Chicago Business School. Shleifer has worked in the areas of comparative corporate governance, law and finance, behavioral finance, as well as institutional economics. He has published seven books, including The Grabbing Hand (with Robert Vishny), Inefficient Markets: An Introduction to Behavioral Finance, and A Crisis of Beliefs: Investor Psychology and Financial Fragility (with Nicola Gennaioli), as well as over a hundred articles. Shleifer is an Editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and a fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Finance Association. In 1999, Shleifer won the John Bates Clark medal of the American Economic Association. According to RePEc, Shleifer is the most cited economist in the world. Dimitri Vayanos is Professor of Finance at London School of Economics, where he also directs the Financial Markets Group Research Centre. The Financial Markets Group Research Centre (@FMG_LSE) was established in 1987 at the LSE. The FMG is a leading centre in Europe for policy research into financial markets. MegaTrade101 - Defined Solutions for Investing & Trading the Financial Markets
Book a One-on-One Day Session Trading Partner! Most often financial events covering investments and trading are well accepted especially if these presentations are free of charge. Obviously there is a catch 22 where speakers or resource persons are from institutions connected with the events organizer as a sponsor. Understandable as a way to attract possible customers. For other paid events with a similar format of presentations, most interested attendees willing to pay-up to learn more or simply try to pick up other important ideas to improve what they may or may not already know are in a disadvantage. As the lack of proper evaluation, addressing their individual 'need to know' and questions to ask would have some degree of difficulty to be answered. And what happens thereafter the events with attendees not completely having the answers to their questions. And this is what MegaTrade101 intends to address in every One-on-One session. We do not pretend to know all the answers but would have the right resources for the information when called for. The importance of being able to assess and enhance every participant the necessary trading skills, solutions based on each one's ability, level of strength and weakness to properly provide and equip them with the resource information whenever called for. This is the first program Sir Alexander intends to provide PH investors / traders especially for those who are 'self-directed' and have the necessary experience to adapt to certain market conditions. Each prospective participant would undergo an assessment and would discuss the relative evaluation that would achieve the expected rate of trading success. Book a Day Session Now! Experience a far superior perspective with a renewed set of fresh eyes on the market, even right after the first One-on-One session. Stay ahead of the market before it moves. While others are just getting in, you would be cashing in all the way to the bank! Fama vs Shiller: Are markets efficient or driven by emotion?
Economist and author of the smash hit book, “An Economist Walks Into a Brothel” Allison Shrager, sits down with Josh Brown, Barry Ritholtz, and Michael Batnik to discuss the great debate, efficient market hypothesis vs. behavioral finance. They discuss how it is possible for Fama and Shiller to share the Nobel Memorial Prize in economic science despite their widely opposing views on what moves asset prices up and down. Ultimately, they ask the question whether markets are efficient or do human emotions dominate the ups and downs of asset prices.
