The Pros and Cons of Organic Farming | Biology for All | FuseSchool
In this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhOrIUlrnPo) we looked at the key principles of organic farming - the use of more natural alternatives instead of chemical fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides or feed additives for livestock. This all sounds great, but there is more to the story. Organic farming isn’t all good. The yields are lower because more produce is damaged by pests, and carefully selected chemical pesticides cannot be used. With an ever-growing world population, we have limited land to feed everyone from. So should we therefore just focus on maximising yields? Or to get the same yields, more land would need to be farmed. Where would this surplus land come from - cutting down our remaining forests and rainforests? This would be far worse for the environment both in terms of climate change and biodiversity. A study in the UK found that a litre of organic milk requires 80% more land than conventional milk to produce. That’s a lot more land, and makes you wonder whether organic foods are a luxury the world just cannot afford to provide. Interestingly, it has been found that some organic farming methods require more water than non-organic alternatives; a huge problem as droughts become more regular and water more scarce. Organic is not necessarily better for the environment either. Organic dairy farms do actually produce more methane per cow than conventional farms because of the diet of the cattle: organic cows apparently burp twice as much as conventional cows!! As methane is a greenhouse gas, this does not bode well for global warming. You also need to consider the airmiles of your produce… in the UK most of the organic food is imported, so if there is a conventionally farmed alternative from a local source then it may be better for the environment to opt for that product. Scientists are still fiercely debating whether conventional or organic farming has a larger environmental footprint; so I am not expecting you to have a clear opinion either! It is actually a big misconception that organic farms cannot use any pesticides; they can because without them, the crop yields would be much too low for the farm to be sustained. Organic farmers can use both synthetic and natural kinds of pesticides, but some of the regular pesticide chemicals are banned on organic farms. As fewer chemicals are used, there is less risk of chemicals remaining on the food, which can only be a good thing for consumers. Scientists are still debating the pros and cons of organic farming in comparison to conventional farming, and there is plenty of information you can read online. The tricky part is that most articles are very biased so don’t be swayed by the first article you read. The principles of organic farming are obviously very good for the environment, but in reality yields matter. There is a balance to be found between looking after our soils and environment, and so employing organic strategies such as crop rotations, but having a limited amount of agricultural land and an ever-growing population. Many conventional farmers employ organic strategies to do their best for the soil structure and local biodiversity, but make use of chemicals in the lowest levels possible whilst still maintaining yields. Why are GMOs Bad?
Why are GMOs bad? They aren’t. They just aren’t, not intrinsically, and certainly not for your health. We’ve been eating them for decades with no ill effects, which makes sense, because a genetically modified organism is simply an organism, like every other organism, produces hundreds of thousands of proteins, but one or two of them are proteins that were chosen specifically by humans. 9 Strangest Genetically Mutated Products
Top 10 strange gmo food and products that you use daily Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] Description: The world of science has reached some incredible heights when it comes to technology. But science is much more than just robots and looking for the next biggest technological breakthrough. Science has also made major innovations when it comes to the food industry and the environment. Because the world has done some great damage to the environment around us, scientists have had to try to mend the damage by using genetic engineering. Whether resources are depleted or the natural course isn’t convenient for big business, scientists come in and fill in the gaps with genetically modified products. GMOs, also known as genetically modified organisms, are becoming a hot button topic in the food industry. The public is concerned about whether or not consuming GMOs might lead to bad health problems like cancer and allergies. Major corporations insist that there isn’t a problem, but local farmers say otherwise and are being put out of business. In this video are some of the strangest genetically modified products. We know that these products aren’t handcrafted by Mother Nature herself, and surely there are risks. All thanks to science, we are now consuming foods that defy the laws of nature. From square watermelons to bananas that have the vaccination for hepatitis B, these products are purely man-made. But time will only tell whether or not these genetically modified products are for the betterment of society or the downfall of it or it could actually save the world from starvation and disease. Only time will give us the answer. The Ideological Threat of Organic Farming
At the core of organic farming is an ideology which bans the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Over the past couple decades, this ideology has been incrementally embraced by the scientific community. This mingling of science and ideology in organic farming research and education has serious consequences for both science and society. Here is a commentary paper on the topic. https://dl.sciencesocieties.org/publications/ael/articles/2/1/170024

Agricultural Economics Definition | Definition & Explanation of Agriculture Economics (Audio Book)
Agricultural Economics Definition | Definition & Explanation of Agriculture Economics (Audio Book) Agricultural economics or agronomics is an applied field of economics, concerned with the application of economic theory in optimizing the production and distribution of food and fibre—a discipline known as agronomics. Agronomics was a branch of economics that specifically dealt with land usage. It focused on maximizing the crop yield while maintaining a good soil ecosystem. Throughout the 20th century the discipline expanded and the current scope of the discipline is much broader. Agricultural economics today includes a variety of applied areas, having considerable overlap with conventional economics. Agricultural economists have made substantial contributions to research in economics, econometrics, development economics, and environmental economics. Agricultural economics influences food policy, agricultural policy, and environmental policy. Economics has been defined as the study of resource allocation under scarcity. Agronomics, or the application of economic methods to optimizing the decisions made by agricultural producers, grew to prominence around the turn of the 20th century. The field of agricultural economics can be traced out to works on land economics. Henry Charles Taylor was the greatest contributor with the establishment of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Wisconsin in 1909. Another contributor, 1979 Nobel Economics Prize winner Theodore Schultz, was among the first to examine development economics as a problem related directly to agriculture. Schultz was also instrumental in establishing econometrics as a tool for use in analyzing agricultural economics empirically; he noted in his landmark 1956 article that agricultural supply analysis is rooted in "shifting sand", implying that it was and is simply not being done correctly. One scholar summarizes the development of agricultural economics as follows: "Agricultural economics arose in the late 19th century, combined the theory of the firm with marketing and organization theory, and developed throughout the 20th century largely as an empirical branch of general economics. The discipline was closely linked to empirical applications of mathematical statistics and made early and significant contributions to econometric methods. In the 1960s and afterwards, as agricultural sectors in the OECD countries contracted, agricultural economists were drawn to the development problems of poor countries, to the trade and macroeconomic policy implications of agriculture in rich countries, and to a variety of production, consumption, and environmental and resource problems." Agricultural economists have made many well-known contributions to the economics field with such models as the cobweb model, hedonic regression pricing models, new technology and diffusion models (Zvi Griliches), productivity and efficiency theory and measurement, and the random coefficients regression. The farm sector is frequently cited as a prime example of the perfect competition economic paradigm. In Asia, agricultural economics was offered first by the University of the Philippines Los Baños Department of Agricultural Economics in 1919. Today, the field of agricultural economics has transformed into a more integrative discipline which covers farm management and production economics, rural finance and institutions, agricultural marketing and prices, agricultural policy and development, food and nutrition economics, and environmental and natural resource economics. Since the 1970s, agricultural economics has primarily focused on seven main topics, according to a scholar in the field: agricultural environment and resources; risk and uncertainty; food and consumer economics; prices and incomes; market structures; trade and development; and technical change and human capital. In the field of environmental economics, agricultural economists have contributed in three main areas: designing incentives to control environmental externalities (such as water pollution due to agricultural production), estimating the value of non-market benefits from natural resources and environmental amenities (such as an appealing rural landscape), and the complex interrelationship between economic activities and environmental consequences. With regard to natural resources, agricultural economists have developed quantitative tools for improving land management, preventing erosion, managing pests, protecting biodiversity, and preventing livestock diseases. .................................................................................. Wall Street Journal Highlights Transportation Issues- Ag Impacts
Today's Wall Street Journal (May 14, 2014) contained two interesting articles regarding transportation and the agricultural economy. The first noted that rail snarls in the U.S. have created a backlog in fertilizer supplies, which is posing problems for farmers in the upper Midwest. While a separate article explained that grain shipments in Canada have been stalled due to increased rail traffic from other commodities like potash and crude oil.

Research Handbook on the WTO Agriculture Agreement
BOOK REVIEW RESEARCH HANDBOOK ON THE WTO AGRICULTURE AGREEMENT New and Emerging Issues in International Agricultural Trade Law Edited by Joseph A. McMahon and Melaku Geboye Desta Edward Elgar Publishing ISBN: 978 1 84844 116 3 www.e-elgar.com FOOD FOR THOUGHT WITHIN THE LEGAL PROFESSION: A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS ON AGRICIULTURAL PRODUCTION AND TRADE POLICY FROM A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers We all need to eat. But not that any of us, even lawyers, give all that much thought to the complex regulatory landscape which underpins the production, marketing and distribution of food worldwide, not to mention a host of related issues which ultimately affect all of us -- hence the fascination of this compendium of learned essays on the subject contained in this latest book from Edward Elgar. Part of Elgar's 'Research Handbooks on the WTO' series, this is a collection of learned articles and essays from a multi-disciplinary team of fourteen practitioners and academics worldwide on the WTO (World Trade Organisation) Agriculture Agreement. The book focuses on 'new' issues linked to the international regulation of agricultural production and trade, many of which, according to the editors, have either been insufficiently covered by the rules of the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA), or not quite adequately covered by existing literature. These are pressing problems nonetheless, as they pertain directly to international agricultural trade law, policy and regulation centering on matters of national food security, global climate change and biotechnology. Many practitioners may not realize this (although many might well do) but, as the editors point out, the AoA effectively ended the era in which Agriculture was excluded from key principles of GATT, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The editors nevertheless, are of the view that 'members of the WTO are still not yet ready to treat agriculture in the same way as other products', even though they concede that the AoA's short term objective is to initiate a process of reform of trade in agriculture, while its long term aim is 'to establish a fair and market-oriented agricultural trading system.' The range of topics covered in this volume is multi-faceted and various. Some of the papers deal with issues that are positively alarming; 'Do WTO rules improve or impair the right to food?' asks the paper from Christian Haberli at the World Trade Institute at Bern. Another paper by Michael Cardwell sheds interesting new light on the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The essay by Graham Dutfield includes examinations of, for example, plant intellectual property and food security, focusing on the institutional and legal considerations and the need for reform. These are only a few examples of course, of the wealth of research on agricultural trade law issues contained in this book. Practitioners with clients involved in agri-business will be particularly interested in the broad spectrum of matters discussed, as will trade negotiators, policy advisers and graduate students in this vital and fascinating field. The book is up to date as of 2012.

Despite living in a globalizad economy, where international trade is the norm and most of the products we use daily are manufactured abroad, agriculture is the still an island of protectionism. Farms are extremely protected all over the world. Is not easy to find a country that has no tariffs, subsidies or quotas for their Primary sector. In Europe, the Common Agricultural Policy –also known as CAP—means over 72 billion USD to the European budget. But the Brexit has become a turning point to this. Since Great Britain was one of the biggest net contributor to CAP, Brussels must cut a lot of those subsidies and, gradually, starting a liberalization. Are we witnessing the end of the CAP in Europe? Could this be a model for other countries? Shall we see an end for agriculture protectionism all over the world? Florida Dems Blindsided By Attorney General – She Demands Criminal Investigation
Please Help Me To 100,000 Sub : American Patriot : https://bit.ly/2yOF8Xi SUB TO BACKUP CHANNEL HERE : https://bit.ly/2DuahBo Florida Dems Blindsided By Attorney General – She Demands Criminal Investigation In an effort that promises to go on at least until December to recount votes in Florida’s races for U.S. Senate, governor, and the state agriculture commissioner. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has now called for criminal investigations into ”irregularities” in the vote counting and the handling of ballots in two South Florida counties by Broward County’s Brenda Snipes who as is being reported now also was lucky enough to “find ballots” in 2012. Here is more via Breitbart: “Broward County, Florida election official Brenda Snipes — who is continuing to find new ballots in the recent statewide midterm elections for Governor and the U.S. Senate — was previously accused of finding ballots after an election in 2012. Government Accountability Insititute (GAI) research director Eric Eggers exclusively told SiriusXM Patriot’s Breitbart News Tonight‘s Senior Editor-at-Large Rebecca Mansour that Snipes allegedly “found ballots” following an election in 2012. @TheAmandaShea Do you think Facebook is censoring Conservative views? Sign petition to support Fee Speech that tells Congress to stop censorship before 2020 elections (Please help by retweeting and following after voting!) Eggers said: She’s also been accused of illegally opening ballots. The Florida GOP sued her for this and when they brought her to court, they said ‘Hey, your office is opening ballots outside the presence of the canvassing board … what’s your explanation?’ And again, the woman in charge of elections in Florida’s second most populous county argued she thought it was okay because her office didn’t understand the meaning of the word ‘canvassing.’ [Emphasis added] This is also not the first time that her office has just found ballots. There was actually a canvassing official back in 2012 that complained that heading into a weekend, they were told there were about 150 votes left to be counted and then Monday morning, well actually there are about 950 votes still to go. [Emphasis added] Eggers said there is “clearly an organized effort to manipulate and alter outcomes,” noting that in Miami-Dade County, about 108 provisional ballots were eliminated in the midterm election because they were from individuals who had voted twice. In a recent piece for Breitbart News, Eggers reviewed Snipes’ history of allowing illegal aliens and felons to vote in elections in Broward County, along with her destroying of ballots.” ✔@realDonaldTrump The Florida Election should be called in favor of Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis in that large numbers of new ballots showed up out of nowhere, and many ballots are missing or forged. An honest vote count is no longer possible-ballots massively infected. Must go with Election Night! And here is even more on Snipes via Breitbart: “On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Evening Edit,” Florida Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera (R) stated that nothing will be ruled out as a potential consequence for Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes (D) for her handling of the 2018 elections. Lopez-Cantera said, “I’ll tell you going forward, nothing is going to be ruled out, as far as consequences for these horrible, horrible elections that she’s done here in Broward this year. Leading into the election, there were no indications, for the 2018 general election that there were going to be any problems. But, you know, she has shown herself to be clearly incompetent, and like I said, nothing will be taken off the table going forward.” As of Tuesday Bondi had sent two separate letters to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen and Secretary of State Ken Detzner where she expressed concern about FDLE’s comments Friday that it is working with Detzner’s office and will investigate reports of cases of voter fraud but had not received any reports as of Friday. Completely farm raised bluefin tuna
A dream has come true of completely farm-raising bluefin tuna to aid sustainability of marine stocks worldwide From the development of fish farming technologies of commercially important fish to practical models of industry-supporting research and completely farm-raising bluefin tuna, the Fisheries Laboratory aims at attaining the world's highest level of research and education. Completed-cycle culture to replenish depleted fish stocks The bluefin tuna is the most prized of 1he tuna family. It is a large fish that grows to 3 m in length and 500 kg in weight as an adult. As the result of its good taste and high price, it has been overfished in recent years, resulting in the decrease in numbers. As a countermeasure, action has been taken worldwide to reduce catches. Today, a large quantity of the marketed bluefin tuna is farm-raised, which comes from wild-caught seed that have been raised to marketable size. If the fry are overfished, it is foreseen that farm-raised numbers will also decline. To maintain supplies under such severe conditions, technology for completely farm-raising bluefin tuna is needed. This technology Involves raising artificially hatched larvae to adults, collecting eggs from them and artificially hatching those eggs to create the next generation. The fish are farm-raised in all stages without requiring wild stock. fish farm fish farming Tuna Overfishing bluefin tuna, bluefintuna, giant bluefin bigeye tuna tuna nutrition facts how to start fish farming business fish farming blue fin tuna value blue fin tuna migration blue fin tuna pics blue fin tuna habitat how much is a blue fin tuna worth northern blue fin tuna blue fin tuna regulations blue fin tuna images blue fin tuna population blue fin tuna speed blue fin tuna sashimi cost of blue fin tuna big blue fin tuna blue fin tuna farming blue fin tuna for sale blue fin tuna wiki tuna blue fin blue fin tuna endangered blue fin tuna fish most expensive blue fin tuna blue fin tuna size biggest blue fin tuna blue fin tuna sushi blue tuna fish southern blue fin tuna blue fin tuna fishing blue finned tuna blue tuna overfishing in new england overfishing in america overfishing in the united states overfishing problems in the ocean statistics of overfishing articles about overfishing overfished fish list overfishing of the oceans overfishing in florida article on overfishing possible solutions to overfishing overfishing in oceans overfishing the oceans overfishing in the pacific ocean problem of overfishing overfishing the ocean pros and cons of overfishing overfishing of cod facts on overfishing overfishing cod ocean overfishing overfishing laws ways to stop overfishing overfishing in the ocean overfishing facts for kids the effects of overfishing effect of overfishing problems of overfishing history of overfishing how can we stop overfishing how to prevent overfishing overfishing video stop overfishing what causes overfishing overfishing in hawaii solutions for overfishing overfishing in japan how to stop overfishing why is overfishing a problem overfishing effects overfishing in australia solutions to overfishing overfishing articles overfishing solutions effects of overfishing overfishing problems overfishing facts

Farming apprenticeships revive agriculture in Yunlin
For years, the aging of rural farming communities has been a big issue in Taiwan, and there are constant calls for more young people to "return to the land". But many of those who answer the call come across the same problems: technical difficulties, a lack of training, and market barriers. These returning natives often find that enthusiasm alone is not enough. In Yunlin County, though, a farmer training school is giving new farmers a leg-up through "Farming Apprenticeships," in which seasoned farmers give new hands the benefit of a lifetime of experience through practical, hands-on classes. Our Sunday special report. Most of these students at this farmer training school in Yunlin are over 50 years old. Here they’re growing peanuts and sweet potatoes. The crops are ready to harvest and the students are raring to go.One of the teachers at the school, Wang Han, has been working the fields for decades. The reason he’s willing to spend his time teaching here is because he’s very sensitive to the problems of Taiwan’s rural farming villages.Wang HanFarmer training school teacherI come to teach farming because I think agricultural knowledge needs to be handed down. Everybody has their own unique experiences, and if those experiences aren’t handed down, that legacy will be cut off. Farming is a very broad field. It can accommodate all kinds of students from every different walk of life. The farmer training school emphasizes the apprenticeship system: every student chooses an expert teacher to follow, and goes out to work in the fields under their tutelage. One student, Wu Kun-chou, runs an umbrella factory for his day job. But in the early mornings, before the factory opens, he comes out to the fields to study.Wu Kun-chouFarming studentYou dig the soil, plant sweet potatoes and corn, and before you know it, you can do something you couldn’t do before. You can plant the fields and get rid of the pests. There’s another reason the school has introduced apprenticeships. Some young farmers who decide to “go back to the land” are full of passion but lacking in skills. It’s a recipe for disaster.Hsu Yong-yuYunlin County Agriculture DepartmentAt the moment, with the poor economic climate in the wider environment, some young people want to go back to their rural hometowns. By setting up the farmer training school, we want to start to teach them on the level of basic knowledge and skills. That’s the only way to prevent the funds they invest from going to waste.Another teacher at the school, Liang Yu-lung, specializes in papayas. This term, he has three apprentices.Today he’s teaching the students how to remove some of the flowers from the papaya tree while it’s in bloom, so the papaya fruit will grow longer and bigger. Knowledge like this has typically been passed on from the lived experience of a teacher. It’s the greatest advantage of the apprenticeship system.Liang’s three students vary greatly in age and in background. One of them - 25 year-old Li I-chun - is typical of young farmers who have gone “back to the land.” After graduating from university he worked in another sector for two years before deciding to study farming – a choice that provoked an uproar in his family.Li I-chun Farming studentI think that as a young person going back to the land, there are opportunities, but there are also pressures and risks. Because of course, when you go back to the countryside to farm, the first thing you experience is that your stable income is cut off. In a factory your income is really pretty stable, and you have annual leave and public holidays off.Figures from the Yunlin County Agriculture Department show that 70 percent of the school’s graduates do indeed go on to work in farming. So these apprenticeships can certainly help create more opportunities for new farmers who want to get their foot in the door. But there may also be new problems created by the system.Li I-chunFarming StudentIf everyone is planting the same crops and doing it really well, how will that work? The issue Li mentions is Taiwanese agriculture’s flawed system of production and marketing. Farmers are often exploited by a whole chain of distributors. By helping young people to return to the land and start farming, the government may also be introducing them to a tough life of struggling to make ends meet, and being taken advantage of.Liang Yu-lungFarmer training school teacherIf you encourage young people to return to the land, you must have a whole policy in place for that. You have to get them to the point where they can sell what they produce – and not in Taiwan, but overseas. We must export. The training from the government is flawed.Apart from being able to grow crops, knowing how to sell them is also a crucial field of study.Chang Ching-chengFarming StudentMost of all we hope we farmers can grow good quality produce, and then see whether we can start our own...

TEDxDubbo - Guy Webb - Terra Carbonicum Maxima: Soil Carbon Sequestration in Broad-acre Farming
Guy founded GAIA Consultancy in 2006 as a structure to introduce biological farming principles into broad-acre farming throughout the NSW grain belt and beyond. The primary focus of the business centres on improving soil carbon as a base line for soil fertility and crop resilience in unpredicable climatic conditions. Guy has dedicated much time and resources towards educational seminars and articles aimed at helping growers to better understand plant nutrition and the role soil fertility, soil biology and soil carbon in creating more resilient, regenerative and economical farming systems. TEDxDubbo focused attention on what we call FACETS -- Food, Agriculture, Climate, Energy, Topsoil and Sustainability. These FACETS are actually potent ideas shared by everyday people with an interest in these disciplines. In many of these topics there is an awareness campaign; the aim of bringing our community together united against catastrophic failures in our food-chain, environment and health. It is worth mentioning that we are also indebted to our natural systems for our economic wealth. Failures in Food, Agriculture, Climate, Energy, Topsoil and Sustainability are not just a local issue -- they are a global concern. http://tedxdubbo.com/ In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Climate Change Explained
A straightforward explanation of Climate Change: the heat from human emissions is roughly equal to exploding 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs every day. Historically, every time carbon dioxide levels increase in Earth's atmosphere, the average surface temperature increases, ice melts, and the seas rise. How Organic Farming Help to Break the Cycle ⭕ of Chemicals 🌡 & Debt💰
Organic farming helped Mr. Keo Nov (PGS-organic farmer in the Kandal Province of Cambodia 🇰🇭) to break the vicious cycle of chemicals and debt. https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/04/18/pgs-cambodia/ Together with his wife, they farm approximately 1,200 square meters of land, nearly a third of an acre. They have been managing their farm organically for about 5 years, growing over 20 kinds of vegetables 🍆🥒🌶🥕which they eat and sell. Their four children now all attend school. “We had a lot of issues with chemical farming. We did not feel very comfortable spraying the food we wanted to eat with so many harmful substances. Now, the bad health effects have disappeared since we stopped using chemicals.” - Mr. Keo Nov This story is based on the result achieved through a Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) pilot project Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP/RAS/3510) “Small-Scale Farmer Inclusion in Organic Agriculture Development through Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS)” and the joint collaboration with IFOAM – Organics International, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Earth Net Foundation (ENF) and grassroots organizations. 🎥 This video was produced in cooperation between FAO and IFOAM – Organics International under the FAO TCP. PGS is not to be confused with Internal Control Systems for group certification (ICS), another certification tool promoted by IFOAM to support smallholders. https://www.ifoam.bio/en/internal-control-systems-ics-group-certification 🔎 LEARN MORE about the Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS): PGS are locally focused quality assurance systems.
