What is Biodiversity & Its Importance? Environmental Science for Kids | Educational Videos by Mocomi
What is biodiversity and why is it important? Biodiversity is the variety of plants and animals living on Earth, carefully playing an important part in maintaining the balance of nature. The diversity of species is not distributed throughout planet because life depends on many factors including geography. There are thousands upon thousands of plant and animal species on earth. They are all continuously evolving and adapting to the environment around them. Biodiversity is the variety of animals and plants found on this planet including the geographic locations they are found in. This concept is what makes our planet different from others in our solar system and being able experience all these variations first hand is what makes the earth so marvelous. Think of the earth as a perfectly tuned machine with sprockets, springs, and oil (plants, animals and climates) all working to maintain the balance of nature. The diversity of species is not evenly distributed throughout the planet because life depends on factors such as temperature, altitude, precipitation, soil, the presence of other species and geography, since tropical regions support more life than polar regions. Biodiversity is important to sustaining life on earth because it prevents any one species from throwing the balance of nature out of order. For example, snakes are not a welcome presence in our lives. We fear them and kill them because of it. One of the many things that snakes feed on is rats and if we were to kill of all the snakes, we would end up having a terrible rat problem. Therefore humans should to everything in their power to conserve the natural variation of snakes to ensure it doesn’t get an unnatural rat problem. For Example – Tropical regions support more life than polar regions. Watch this video on how we have to preserve this diversity to sustain life on Earth. What is Ozone Layer? - Environmental Science for Kids | Educational Videos by Mocomi
What is ozone layer and how it is getting depleted? Life on earth is protected from the UV rays by a layer in the upper atmosphere (known as the stratosphere), which surrounds earth. This layer is called the Ozone layer. Ozone is a gas made up of three oxygen atoms (O3) much like the layer of butter that settles on top if a glass of buttermilk is left unattended for a while. This layer is just about 3-5mm thick. This thinly spread-out gas has been protecting life near the earth’s surface from the sun’s harmful UV rays for billions of years. Ozone is spread thinly throughout the stratosphere in low quantities. Watch this animated video to understand Why is the ozone layer in danger? and What is the ozone hole? An informative video on Sustainability, For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has ecological, economic, political and cultural dimensions. Here are a few ways in which your actions can contribute to sustainability. Lifestyle - Your lifestyle is your choice and you can change it. For example, when you go to the grocery store, make sure you always carry a cloth bag. This way the shopkeeper does not have to give you many plastic bags. Fixing - If your watch, or a toy, or a camera is broken or not working, try getting it fixed before you buy yourself a new one. Recycle - Try and be conscious about the things around you. When you consume something, see if you can re-use it later. Learn more about how we can contribute to sustainability. Sustainable design in education building – the Institute of Environmental Sustainability
Read the full article at: http://trendsideas.com/#/search/46022 At Loyola University Chicago’s Institute of Environmental Sustainability, students walk the sustainable talk every day. Trends editorial director Paul Taylor looks at how the building by architects Solomon Cordwell Buenz achieves that aim. Integrated university halls of residence, research labs, teaching facilities and urban glasshouse, incorporate geothermal heating, natural ventilation, optimum solar gain and rainwater harvesting. Educational practice today is very much based around a hands-on approach – a belief that the greatest understanding comes from actively participating rather than just being lectured to. The Institute of Environmental Sustainability at Loyola University Chicago takes that a step further. It’s an integrated learning facility that brings together green building strategies, planet-friendly energy use, eco-farming, research and teaching labs with student housing and a social hub. Architects Solomon Cordwell Buenz reworked an existing brick structure into teaching and research facilities … and then added two new structures to create the 65,000 square metre complex. The most dramatic of these is the Ecodome – a central urban farm and laboratory under glass. The other is a new brick building which bookends the complex and provides student accommodation. Looking a little like a giant glass roll-top desk, the Ecodome’s shape optimises passive ventilation. Rising hot air is drawn out of the greenhouse while computer controlled vents allow cooler air to enter from below. This creates enough air flow through the space without the need for mechanical assistance. And the curving façade allows maximum solar gain … as well as collection and channeling of rainwater. The LEED-rated design also involves a geothermal system of 90 wells, making it the largest of its kind in Chicago. This too becomes part of the learning environment – glass floor panels allow students to see the operation first hand and read displays showing the water’s temperature as it descends or surfaces. The end result is that the Institute of Environmental Sustainability is itself a living and learning laboratory – an academic facility and integrated dormitory where students walk the sustainability talk every day. The power of inclusive education | Ilene Schwartz | TEDxEastsidePrep
The classroom is a complex environment. If not explicitly managed it can quickly turn into a collection of smaller groups that happen to be in the same room rather than an inclusive whole. See how this, sometimes overlooked, aspect can make a profound difference. Dr. Ilene Schwartz is a professor in the Area of Special Education at the University of Washington and the Director of the Haring Center for Research and Training in Education at UW. She earned her Ph.D. in child and developmental psychology from the University of Kansas and is a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). Dr. Schwartz joined the UW faculty in 1991 and has an active research and professional training agenda with primary interests in the area of autism, inclusion, and the sustainability of educational interventions. She has had consistent research funding from the U.S. Department of Education since 1990 and serves on a number of editorial review boards including the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and the Journal of Early Intervention. My Personal Learn Environment #rict1718
Hello everyone! My name is Maravillas, I am a student of Bilingual Primary Education at the University of Murcia, and this is my video about my personal learn environment in the course #RICT1718. I hope you enjoy it! Hello! My name is Maravillas, and I would like to tell you a story, my story… I am studying Bilingual Primary Education at the University of Murcia. I have always wanted to be a teacher who will changes the perspective of education to students, teaching them to learn in a different way, without books, and playing and interacting with web 2.0 tools; a teacher who would transmit the importance of knowing what they are studying, how they are studying it, and especially why. Nowadays, teachers need to improve their Digital teacher competence if they want to be up to the demands of current learning. So, how I would develop my Digital teacher competence to be up the demands of current learning? Enhancing my Personal Learn Environment or PLE. My PLE is Twitter. I have been using it since 2013 and it has accompanied me in my development process as a person. I started using it because I could access a lot of information, articles, news, or videos. With the information founded, I make my own reflections when I think about a topic that interests me or worries me, therefore I can even modify information with my point of view. In addition, I usually use Twitter to connect with other people, transmit opinions or experiences with them, which means, my Personal Learn Network or PLN. There are many web 2.0 tools available to everyone that can help enhance our PLE. To improve my PLE I could start writing my ideas or projects on my own blog, upload videos to YouTube, or also subscribe to scientific journals. If I had to choose five people that are part of my PLN, they would be: -Jordi Adell: because he is expert in educative technology, digital competence, PLE and PLN. -Clara Megías: she created a new pedagogical methodology using artistic expressions, called Art Thinking, which is part of the movement of invisible pedagogies. -Fernando Trujillo: is an expert in educative innovation, the educational use of ICT, and project-based teaching. -Antonio A. Márquez: I am very interested in his work in therapeutic pedagogy, because he expects to transform the school towards a model of participation and progress of all students. -María Acaso: she is an expert in educative innovation, she thinks that the current educational system is obsolete and a change is necessary, so she has created educational practices in which the content is not as important as the methodology. The note that I deserve for this subject is an 8 because I have put a lot of effort and I have done a good job, although because of the short duration of this video I have not been able to express all my acquired knowledge in this subject and my desire to continue learning. Finally I have to say that in this course we have learned many tools in order to improve the educational system, which I will put into practice in the very near future... Thank you very much!

Perceptions of students of the medical educational environment – Video abstract [ID 78838]
Video abstract of an original research paper “Perceptions of students in different phases of medical education of the educational environment: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin” published in the open access Advances in Medical Education and Practice journal by Rahman NIA, Aziz AA, Zulkifli Z, et al. Background: The Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) was planned and designed to quantify the educational environment precisely for medical schools and health-related professional schools. DREEM is now considered a valid and reliable tool, which is globally accepted for measuring the medical educational environment. The educational environment encountered by students has an impact on satisfaction with the course of study, perceived sense of well-being, aspirations, and academic achievement. In addition to being measurable, the educational environment can also be changed, thus enhancing the quality of medical education and the environment, and the medical education process. The objective of this study was to assess the educational environment of the Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) undergraduate medical program from the students’ perspective. The study expected to explore UniSZA medical students’ overall perceptions, perceptions of learning, teachers, atmosphere, academic self-perception, and social self-perception using the DREEM questionnaire. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted to study the perceptions of the students toward the educational environment of UniSZA as a new medical school, using the DREEM questionnaire. All medical students of UniSZA from Years I–V enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programs were the target population (n=270). Therefore, the universal sampling technique was used. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 20 software. This study obtained ethical clearance from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UniSZA. Results: A total of 195 out of 270 students responded. Respondents included 31% males and 69% females. The overall DREEM scores were significantly higher (P,0.001) for females than males. Conclusion: The medical students at UniSZA showed a positive perception of their educational environment. The new medical faculty, established for only a few years, has achieved an above-average, conducive educational environment for students. Most of the students showed a positive perception for the entire five domains tested in the DREEM survey. Females were consistently satisfied with UniSZA’s educational environment, and self-perception was high, as compared to male undergraduates. What is Carbon Footprint? - Environmental Science for Kids | Educational Videos by Mocomi
Do you know what is carbon footprint and how to reduce it? Your Carbon Footprint is the amount of Carbon Dioxide and Methane gas you release into the environment by consuming energy. Most energy produced in the world is done by burning fossil fuels such as petroleum and gas. You may not experience it directly but everything you do requires energy. You need petrol to create energy to drive your car, gas to light your stove, and even the paper you write on in school requires energy to be transformed from wood to books. There is no clean way to burn fossil fuels. No matter how you do it, you will produce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the process. Hence, Your carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide and methane gas you release into the environment by consuming energy. To get a better idea of how consuming something adds to your carbon footprint take the example of paper. Let’s say that plants take 5 units of energy to become trees. It takes 1 unit to cut down the tree and 3 units to transport it to a factory. The factory takes another 5 units to convert this tree into paper. Finally another 1 unit is used to transport that paper to your city. This means that when you buy the book it is worth 15 units of energy. It may take you less than 1 unit of energy to throw a book into the dustbin but in reality you are chucking away 15 units of energy. Now think of every person in the whole world throwing away just 1 book and you get 7 billion X 15 units of energy when someone simply throws away a book Watch this video to understand how our everyday activities add to our Carbon Footprint and how we can conserve energy. What is ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY? What does ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY mean? ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY meaning - ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY definition - ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Environmental psychology is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the interplay between individuals and their surroundings. The field defines the term environment broadly, encompassing natural environments, social settings, built environments, learning environments, and informational environments. Since its conception, the field has been committed to the development of a discipline that is both value oriented and problem oriented, prioritizing research aimed at solving complex environmental problems in the pursuit of individual well-being within a larger society. When solving problems involving human-environment interactions, whether global or local, one must have a model of human nature that predicts the environmental conditions under which humans will behave. This model can help design, manage, protect and/or restore environments that enhance reasonable behavior, predict the likely outcomes when these conditions are not met, and diagnose problem situations. The field develops such a model of human nature while retaining a broad and inherently multidisciplinary focus. It explores such dissimilar issues as common property resource management, wayfinding in complex settings, the effect of environmental stress on human performance, the characteristics of restorative environments, human information processing, and the promotion of durable conservation behavior. This multidisciplinary paradigm has not only characterized the dynamic for which environmental psychology is expected to develop. It has also been the catalyst in attracting other schools of knowledge in its pursuit, aside from research psychologists. Geographers, economists, landscape architects, policy-makers, sociologists, anthropologists, educators, and product developers all have discovered and participated in this field. Although "environmental psychology" is arguably the best-known and most comprehensive description of the field, it is also known as human factors science, cognitive ergonomics, ecological psychology, ecopsychology, environment–behavior studies, and person–environment studies. Closely related fields include architectural psychology, socio-architecture, behavioral geography, environmental sociology, social ecology, and environmental design research.

ACEF Webinar - The Environment as the "Third Teacher": Transforming Learning Environments
Inspired by the practices of Reggio Emilia and also the work of architect Anita Rui Olds, the presentation "Transforming Learning Environments" focuses on transforming learning environments into spaces that are "designed for miracles, not minimums" (Anita Rui Olds, 2001). In the effort to improve upon the quality of learning programs, we examine the research behind the design, organization, and materials choices for an optimal learning environment. Viewing the environment as the "third teacher," the schools of Reggio Emilia pay significant attention to every detail in the environment while putting to use current research on environmental design.

Teaching in the New Developmental Education Environment
Presented by Donna McKusick as part of the Speaking About Pedagogy & Practice in English Featured Speakers Series on November 20, 2014. "Teaching in the New Developmental Education Environment: Accelerated, Integrated, Contextualized, and Supportive" Dr. McKusick will begin this session by discussing how developmental education in reading and English at the college level has changed in the past 20 years. She will describe a new paradigm which she calls “The New Developmental Education” and provide a rationale for a change in philosophy and instructional strategy. She will then provide a window into what constitutes the most effective pedagogy in developmental reading and writing courses. Dr. McKusick will provide instructional examples for lessons in acceleration, describing what backward curricular design looks like. She will then move on to integrated literacy instruction, again providing a sample lesson that demonstrates how precious instructional time can be saved by adopting an integrated literacy approach. Dr. McKusick will explain contextualization and provide ways to make learning more immediate and meaningful. Finally, she will demonstrate how to support learners with feedback that reflects research on grit and mindsets about intelligence. Dr. Donna McKusick has served community colleges for over thirty years in both instructional and administrative capacities. Dr. McKusick is dean for developmental education and special academic programs at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). In this position, she coordinates developmental education, academic support, learning communities, honors, and the libraries. She has degrees in English, Reading, and Education including a doctorate from University of Maryland in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on academic literacy, and has taught extensively all in all these areas. She has also received her certification in developmental education from the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University. Dr. McKusick has co-authored a book with Dr. Al Starr, Making Sense: A Guide for Readers and Writers, published by Pearson. A new edition of this book will be released in Spring, 2015. She has provided consultation, delivered presentations, and published articles on literacy, developmental education, learning communities, and closing the achievement gap in higher education.
