English Vocabulary: How to talk about the economy

09:40
http://www.engvid.com Let's talk business! Today you'll learn vocabulary that will help you to read and speak about the economy. We will look at common words used to discuss economic matters, such as GDP, stagnation, fiscal, and more. These words and expressions will help you read financial news articles and follow economic reports on television and online. After the lesson, take the quiz and try to practice these words by discussing economic matters in English with your co-workers and friends. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments section on engVid. http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-how-to-talk-about-the-economy/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson, we're going to look at business English. We're going to talk about the economy. Now, we're not going to get into too much detail. We're not going to get into economic theories, etc. What we're going to look at is some vocabulary that will help you read financial articles and newspapers, or online, or watch financial broadcasts on TV; CNN, Money Matters, etc., things like that. So, we're going to look at all these words. We're going to start with "GDP" because everything somehow relates to "GDP - gross domestic product". What is this? This is the total value, the total monetary value of goods and services produced within a country. So everything that the country produces from toilet paper to airplanes, and services from massage to heart surgery, all the money that's made from these goods and services together adds up to the GDP. So, when we're talking about GDP, we're going to refer back to this expression when we're talking about some of these other words. So, first, let's look at "fiscal". "Fiscal" basically means anything to do with money, anything to do with financial matters, especially when we're talking about taxes. Okay? So, when... The most common thing you'll hear is "fiscal year". So when we're talking about a company's fiscal year, we're talking about it's the beginning of its tax year to the end of its tax year. In some countries, everybody matches this to January to December; in other countries, you're allowed... Your fiscal year starts when you start your business, and then one year later is the end of your fiscal year. It's easier to match it to the calendar year, but... A "quarter". Now, you're going to always hear about prices, and stocks, and values going up or down over the last quarter or over the last two quarters. What is a "quarter"? It's basically three months. So if you're talking about the first quarter of the year, you're talking about January, February, March. That's your first quarter. Your next three months, second quarter. Four quarters makes one year. "Currency". I think everybody knows this word, but just in case, this is the money that is used in a country or a region. This is the monetary value that is used for exchanges, trades, investments, etc. In Canada, we use the Canadian dollar. In the U.S., they use the American dollar. Euro in Europe, etc. A "budget". A "budget" or "to budget", it can be a noun or a verb, means to make a plan on how to spend a certain amount of money. So, for example, a government has this much money that they need to spend, or they have a plan that they want to spend this much money. Now, they want to spend a million dollars. I'm being very simple, here; I'm not going to get into big numbers. They need to spend a million dollars to provide all the services that they need and to buy all the materials that they need to import, etc. If they are running on a deficit, that means that they need to spend more money than they have. They have to spend on things to bring in or to run the country, but they don't have. So if I need to spend a million dollars but I only make the revenues of the country are only $900,000, then they will run on $100,000 deficit. Okay? "Surplus" is the opposite. "Surplus" is when the government or any company, you don't have to apply this to a government, when you have more money than you need for the budget. So if I need to spend a million dollars over the next year, but I have a million and a half, then I have half a million dollar surplus, which is always a good thing. "Inflation/deflation". "Inflation" is when prices of goods and services go up, but wages stay the same. So, basically, the purchase power of the individual goes down. You have the same amount of money, but you can buy fewer things or you can hire fewer people to do to have services for you. "Deflation" is the opposite. That's when prices go down, and the value of your dollar or your currency goes up. Both situations are not good.

Live Newspaper Reading Session | Live Grammar Class| Live Spoken English Class| By Vinit Kapoor

57:49
Support the stream: https://streamlabs.com/learnenglishwithzita In this live session we teach you how to read newspaper. We are reading one of the articles published in one of the national newspapers. We have also provided vocabulary used in this article. Most people offer excuse that they don’t read newspaper because they don’t understand English of newspaper; while it is other way round- You don’t understand English of newspaper because you don’t read newspaper! In this video we show you how to make it useful for the learning of the English language and also to succeed in different competitive exams. The editorial pages of the prominent newspapers are rich in thought & vocabulary. They have a lot to offer in aspects of knowledge, vocabulary, current affairs and also grammar. Make it a point to read at least one editorial a day, they should indeed form the core of your refreshing process of reading & learning. A newspaper can be an excellent English teacher & not a very expensive one! The moment you find an interesting word, underline it & jot it down on a notebook after finishing the article. Now, look for its meaning in the dictionary and also search for its synonyms and antonyms. Most newspapers follow a set vocabulary pattern. Once you master certain words that a newspaper uses, your comprehension will go up & so will your confidence. If you come across different phrases and idioms, underline them too and learn their meanings & usage. Make a separate notebook for newspaper vocabulary & browse through these words every now & then. Don’t lose hope if you don’t understand words or articles in the beginning. Rome was not built in a day. It takes time to learn something worthwhile. The most important thing that you as a learner can develop is reading sense. You might not know the meaning of a particular word. So what? Try to guess it & when you crosscheck later on you will pleasantly surprise yourself. You may go awfully wrong at times but who said you will not fail. In your failures lie your most profound learning! Remember, how you learnt your native language. Once you are done with reading the editorial/article, now you need to go slow and look up for the different words and sentences which you have struggled to understand earlier. Don’t leave the comprehension to be understood later. Later could be never, so do it there and then. Investigate the entire subject of the article and makes notes of different words, phrases and idioms. Try to find out the general idea behind the editorial and this will also fortify your current affairs section. Hope you will develop a habit of reading newspaper on daily basis after watching this video.

Reading News Articles

13:49
In this lesson learners are made aware of different texts in newspapers in terms of the intention of the writer. We also discuss the different approaches one may take to reading different styles of articles. Learners are exposed to the criteria that editors use in selecting news articles by means of interviews with journalists and editors from the Sunday Times. The interviews will give learners an interesting insight into how newspapers are created, and will help them to understand that newspapers are texts that involve choices. You could use the criteria that journalists and editors claim they use to assess whether articles in the Sunday Times fulfil the criteria.

Finding News Articles with ProQuest Newspapers

03:13
Search the full text of thousands of newspapers simultaneously, or use advanced controls to drill down to exactly what you need to find for your research. The University of Alabama Libraries Homepage: lib.ua.edu ProQuest Newspapers (University of Alabama Libraries Login) URL: http://libdata.lib.ua.edu/login?url=https://search.proquest.com/news/advanced?accountid=14472 Transcript: Hi my name is Jon, I’m a librarian at the University of Alabama This video will demonstrate how to use the ProQuest Newspapers database to locate newspaper articles for your research. Starting at the libraries homepage [lib.ua.edu], select the Databases link from the quick menu. Locate ProQuest Newspapers under “P” on the A-Z list. This database provides full-text articles from thousands of national, regional, local, and university newspapers and newsmagazines, and coverage is updated daily. You can search for keywords or phrases, or by other parameters in the search bars and then further refine the results. Because this database is searching the full text of news articles, you should use keywords and phrases that you'd find in news writing. For some searches, searching in specific fields will greatly improve your results. For example, let’s say we want to write a paper about the effects of the tornadoes in Alabama in April 2011, and we need examples of local news coverage from that time. Just searching for tornado and Alabama and 2011 will return a lot of irrelevant results. So let’s start over, and search for “tornado” but look for articles only published in the Tuscaloosa News, which received a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the disaster. You can do this by selecting “Publication Title” from the drop down menu. If you aren’t sure of a publication’s title, you can select “Look Up Publications” under the menu tab to add a publication title to the search. Alabama gets tornadoes regularly, so our results are coming from various years, although from the date graph on the left column, it’s clear that there is a spike of stories from 2011 and 2012. You can use the sliders in the publication date graph or enter a date range to refine your results. In this example, let’s first limit to stories from 2011 using the sliders. And then further limit to April 2011. We can then order the results chronologically using the sorting drop-down menu at the top of the left column. OK, so now we have a list of stories from the Tuscaloosa News mentioning “tornado” published after April 1, 2011 The tornados occurred on April 27, so let’s scroll down past this date and find an article. Click on an article title to view the full text and record. The menu on the right gives you various export options, such as email or “save as .pdf”. You can also use the citation tool to generate a citation for the article in most major citation formats and paste it into your works cited page (just be sure to double-check it for accuracy). That’s all for now, thanks for watching. If you have further questions, you can call us [205-348-6047], text us [205-377-0920], or visit ask.lib.ua.edu to Ask-A-Librarian

Spent Years Learning English Words from Newspapers… Then Burned It All to Ashes!

07:18
Here’s what Sachin posted on one of my blog articles: “Robby in my school/ college days I was hopeless in my language skills, my native language, 2nd language (Hindi) and English... all of them. I had flunk in last two languages 2-3 times and could barely manage to cross 40% in my native language (35% was passing). During that time I was told to read Editorial of English newspaper and mark difficult words from it, practice it and you will be fluent in English...:=O I did that religiously for a long period of time, hoping that at some point God will see may efforts and will have mercy on me and turn on the language button which was in off mode since birth. Honestly I was waiting for miracle to happen but nothing happened for long time...:'( I had a big file of those editorials and word power. I never heard those words in my daily life....and finally few years ago I burned those files to ashes... :D” Now, I totally agree with you Sachin – you’re much better off having burned those files because that’s completely the wrong way to achieve English fluency! To the point, videos are ‘short notes’ about a topic related to the syllabus. The Drishti Publications books and magazine(s) (’Drishti current affairs today’ magazine) have already successfully featured ‘to the point’ section. Here is what you can expect to gain from the ‘to the point’ videos: quick grasp of the subject matter; easy-to-understand format; knowledge of pros and cons of a topic; what, why, how, where dimensions of a topic answered. This should be very helpful for civil services syllabus (General Studies)where you need to study a vast syllabus in a short amount of time and write about 200 words in Mains answers (or do MCQs in Prelims exam).
