Ankle Mobility & Stability - Why It Is So Critical For Movement & How To Do It

Removing pain and actually correcting the problem are two different things entirely. Leaving a stiff ankle unattended, or even worse applying tape or braces is a disaster waiting to happen! I have seen so many ACL ruptures or tears caused from ankle stiffness! The body will need to compensate at other joints in order to move due to the loss of ankle mobility. Dorsi-flexion is something we all tend to take for granted in daily life and in sport and trust me you can ask the people with walking impairments how hard it is to walk when your foot does not do this. Every time you squat, lunge, and move your legs for almost any daily activity you require it. In sports even more so with high powered multi-directional movement patterns (eg, tennis, football, basketball etc), requiring high levels of ankle mobility to be able to move in several directions all in a split second, while maintaining perfect balance and control. The risk is much higher for this reason which is why any sportspeople who suffers recurring ankle ligament injury must have a strong focus on regaining optimal mobility as fast as they can. The common chain reaction from loss of ankle mobility is often seen easily with the feet moving into excessive pronation, otherwise known as flat feet. As the person begins to try and move with this excessive pronation and flat feet, a chain reaction of new problems is beginning to surface. Injuries like plantar fasciitis and achilles strain are common at this stage. Now just applying stretches and even mobility exercises is only solving part of the puzzle. You still need to teach the body reflex stabilization and how to coordinate movements, in particular single leg movements we use everyday with walking and running. This is where patella tracking, ITB friction syndrome and ACL injuries happen. Lastly the poor position of the lower limb then in turn creates strength deficits in glute strength and control at the hip. The glutes provide external rotation of the femur, but like the muscles in the feet and the VMO are a phasic muscle that is prone to weakness and laziness. The longer this dysfunction remains in place they begin to lose their effectiveness in controlling this faulty alignment and now it is just a matter of time for something worse to develop. This is where you see hip problems like Piriformis Syndrome develop and lower back problems from poor hip control. All of these just the end result of not rehabilitating your ankle sprain properly! SUMMARY ======= This is a list of the chemical elements and their isotopes, listed in terms of stability.Atomic nuclei consist of protons and neutrons, which attract each other through the nuclear force, while protons repel each other via the electric force due to their positive charge. These two forces compete, leading to some combinations of neutrons and protons being more stable than others. Neutrons stabilize the nucleus, because they attract protons, which helps offset the electrical repulsion between protons. As a result, as the number of protons increases, an increasing ratio of neutrons to protons is needed to form a stable nucleus; if too many or too few neutrons are present with regard to the optimum ratio, the nucleus becomes unstable and subject to certain types of nuclear decay. Unstable isotopes decay through various radioactive decay pathways, most commonly alpha decay, beta decay, or electron capture. Many other rare types of decay, such as spontaneous fission or cluster decay are known. (See radioactive decay for details.) Of the first 82 elements in the periodic table, 80 have isotopes considered to be stable. The 83rd element, bismuth, was traditionally regarded as having the heaviest stable isotope, bismuth-209, but in 2003 researchers in Orsay, France, measured the half-life of 209Bi to be 1.9×1019 years. Technetium, promethium (atomic numbers 43 and 61, respectively) and all the elements with an atomic number over 82 only have isotopes that are known to decompose through radioactive decay. No undiscovered elements are expected to be stable; therefore, lead is considered the heaviest stable element. However, it is possible that some isotopes that are now considered stable will be revealed to decay with extremely long half-lives (as with 209Bi). This list depicts what is agreed upon by the consensus of the scientific community as of 2016.For each of the 80 stable elements, the number of the stable isotopes is given. Only 90 isotopes are expected to be perfectly stable, and an additional 163 are energetically unstable, but have never been observed to decay. Thus, 253 isotopes (nuclides) are stable by definition (including tantalum-180m, for which no decay has yet been observed). Those that may in the future be found to be radioactive are expected to have half-lives longer than 1022 years (for example, xenon-134).Of the chemical elements, only one element (tin) has 10 such stable isotopes, one (xenon) has eight isotopes, four have seven isotopes, eight have six isotopes, ten have five isotopes, nine have four isotopes, five have three stable isotopes, 16 have two stable isotopes, and 26 have a single stable isotope.Additionally, about 29 nuclides of the naturally occurring elements have unstable isotopes with a half-life larger than the age of the Solar System (~109 years or more). An additional four nuclides have half-lives longer than 100 million years, which is far less than the age of the solar system, but long enough for some of them to have survived. These 33 radioactive naturally occurring nuclides comprise the radioactive primordial nuclides. The total number of primordial nuclides is then 253 (the stable nuclides) plus the 33 radioactive primordial nuclides, for a total of 286 primordial nuclides. This number is subject to change if new shorter-lived primordials are identified on Earth. One of the primordial nuclides is tantalum-180m, which is predicted to have a half-life in excess of 1015 years, but has never been observed to decay. The even longer half-life of 7.7 x 1024 years of tellurium-128 was measured by a unique method of detecting its radiogenic daughter xenon-128 and is the longest known experimentally measured half-life. Another notable example is the only naturally occurring isotope of bismuth, bismuth-209, which has been predicted to be unstable with a very long half-life, but has been observed to decay. DSLR Flash grips -  Add stability to your handheld camera shots

See full article with Buy Links: http://www.mediahalo.com/articles/flashgrips/?you33 Since they don't add much hassle to bring along, i almost always have this in my bag(or hanging off it) when i go out to shoot with my DSLR. How do they work? Flash grips give you a basic extra handle, the more points of contact you have with the camera the better your chance at holding it steady. You'd likely seen many rigs out there, and many of them have two handlegrips. Adding a flashgrip to your camera is like a scaled down version of that. They're mostly styled for DSLRS, but if your video camera has a handle which can rotate to match this, that will work great too. Ever get hand fatigue in your right hand from holding the camera? That's the camera pulling against your wrist, and adding this second grip will do wonders in solving that. Do you give up control over buttons/settings? Possibly, but what i've found is i can retain most of that by positioning the grip close to the body and at a slight angle so i can get at the buttons/rings/etc...

Without doubt Lunges are the hardest exercise for people to do if they have knee pain or even a basic balance problem. Many times the flexibility imbalance of hip flexors dominating over the glutes and hamstrings also influences the stabilizer muscles supporting the pelvis. To train stability, you need to force the small muscles to be activated using reflex timing and skill that is similar to the pattern of movement they are needed in. This is why so many so called "core programs" do very little to improve movement as a plank or lying down abdominal exercise requires no reflex movement and is not even close to looking like a lunge movement pattern. This is one of the simple agility, stability drills we use for improving single leg cutting movements used often in sports like football, basketball and soccer. ACL tears or complete ruptures happen when you plant your foot on the ground and attempt to rotate your body in relation to the planted foot, placing your weight on it. This creates a twisting force through the knee joint, which the ACL must absorb. When the ACL cannot cope the force it ruptures. And with Back Pain this is very important step to complete as most people develop their problem due to a lack of stability first, that deteriorates to a weakness and lastly tightness and overworking muscle. There is a lot of confusion with stability and it is more than just trying to balance on a wobble board. I like to break this down into two parts. Firstly I like to identify the current level of core function to assess the stability of the trunk and pelvis. The exercises shown in this video are great tests as much as corrective exercises. A tight thoracic spine and upper back muscles is something we see more and more these days and it can have a disastrous effect on the body as it will create neck pain, shoulder pain and even lower back pain! From sitting behind computers all day, to poor training techniques and the evolution of smartphones forcing us to look down and stare at them we are quickly finding ways to create more pain. Getting a massage on this area will do very little if you do not know how to mobilize the spine. This can be very difficult to do as you will need to do 2 key things 1. Develop extension by releasing the tight areas and then strengthening the weak muscles to be able to hold your posture better for longer 2. Be able to effectively rotate the upper back. When it becomes stiff and rigid from the poor posture you now are no longer able to rotate around your upper back which creates problems for the head and neck and also potentially create pain for the lower back. The drills in this video are a combination of mobility and stability exercises for just focusing on one without the other will not help you. You need to work on both at the same time for the thoracic spine is very tricky to work with as it can do so many things and the fact that other areas can greatly influence the movement. The cause of all the trouble has a lot to do with muscle imbalance. The effects of this muscle imbalance between the trunk flexors (your abs) and trunk extensors (your back muscles) creates a chain reaction of problems. As the abdominal musculature become progressively stronger than the back muscles, the following postural imbalances may be seen: 1.Short and tight upper abdominal musculature 2.Depressed sternum 3.Forward head 4.Increased thoracic kyphosis, (a hump on the upper back known as Dowagers Hump) This type of posture is very common and usually associated with lower back pain and disc bulges! This is due to the development of a "flat back" and loss of your spine's natural curve. This can progress to a C-shaped spine, and severely altered spinal mechanics. The C-curve posture encourages degenerative changes in the spinal column, not to mention that it increases your chances of neck pain as your head moves further and further forward. "Every inch your head moves forward it doubles itself in weight!" This means your neck muscles which are designed to hold a head, that on average weighs about 5-7kg for most people, now needs to hold a head that weighs 15-20kg! This is the basic laws of levers. These neck muscles are now forced into working excessively hard, ALL DAY! They can never stop for if they become weak you will not be able to look forward, and ultimately function as a human. They learn quickly that the only way to keep your eyesight looking forward is to shorten themselves and become good at doing it. We have covered the technique of the Turkish Get Up before but this progression using an inverted kettlebell adds another dimension to this exercise. But at least the dumbbell is perfectly balanced. The inverted kettlebell places massive demands on not just the shoulder but the wrist and also the trunk as any deviation from perfect alignment will see the weight fall and you lose your stability. We love using this a lot for shoulder rehabilitation and even neck rehab in the later stages of our training. For the simple reason it forces perfect mobility of the two joints people lack it the most.
