Historic UK Newspapers Go Online

02:29
For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://me.lt/9P8MUn The British Library is digitizing its newspaper collection as an online archive, making it accessible across the world. Here are the details. Trying to access an historic newspaper in the UK has traditionally involved a trip to London to the British Library newspaper store to trawl through huge bound copies of newspapers. Now though, there's an easier way. The British Library and online publisher BrightSolid launched an online archive on Tuesday of up to 4 million pages of backdated articles - from 200 newspaper titles. The head of the newspaper collection at the British Library, Ed King told Reuters: [Ed King, British Library, Head of the Newspaper Collection]: "The library formed a partnership with BrightSolid last year to realize the scanning and placing online of 40 million pages of newspaper over the next ten years. As we launch this product there will be up to 4 million pages available straight away." Debra Chatfield from BrightSolid said it was a massive project: [Debra Chatfield, BrightSolid]: "This has been a multi million pound investment for BrightSolid but it's a project we are doing over ten years - it's the biggest mass digitization of newspaper archive projects that's ever been done in the UK so it has been a considerable investment but it's a really exciting project and at the moment we have 12 billion words online that can search from today." Almost every UK paper over the past two hundred years has been stored at the library, in archive rooms called stacks. There are 200 miles of shelving, housing newspapers dating back to the 1700s. [Ed King, British Library, Head of the Newspaper Collection]: "All the words in the newspaper of every page will be searchable so people can search for absolutely anything, you can search for your ancestors you can search political events you can search in a myriad of ways it's going to be a wonderful resource a treasure trove to explore." Digitizing such a vast collection is long and painstaking work and a special unit was set up in the Colindale base of the British Library dedicated to carefully scanning every single page - one at a time. Scanning machines have been specially modified and creases in the papers are ironed out. BrightSolid says it hopes to recoup it's massive investment by charging customers for their searches, as well as providing packages to educational and media outlets.

What is the future of British newspapers?

With the Independent soon to devote only to its online readership, there have been concerns that this is the beginning of the end of the print medium in the UK. The Truth behind the fabricated article about me featured in The British Sunday Times & The Guardian

12:55
COPYRIGHT, in 2011, the book I wrote based on my life story in 1993 was turned into a movie of the same name. During this time I was subjected to huge interest from the media, wanting to know more about my life story and also to hear it from my own mouth. It was also during this period that three of what I considered to be respectable media outlets decided they might sell more newspapers by putting a sceptical, negative twist on my life story which went on to damage my credibility as a writer and continue to affect my good name in a defamatory manner to this day. These newspapers, The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Independent all ran a similar article in which they made false, unproven statements. The article’s mentioned all stemmed from a man who claimed to be a journalist from The Irish Times. This man, who I welcomed into my home when he claimed to be a student journalist decided he was going to use his personal vendetta against me to create a name for himself in the media. Unfortunately for him, he made a fool of himself and no longer works in the media but the damage he initially inflicted still has a significant effect on my good name. Take for example how Wikipedia has decided to only use these slanderous articles as a source of information about me. I requested to each of these newspapers to retract their defamatory articles and print an apology as the articles were causing an extremely negative effect on my credibility and the good reputation I had spent years building as a writer. This, and also I requested the retractions as the articles were based on completely unreliable sources and no solid proof. For more detailed information please see the article I posted on my official website in response to the slanderous articles. I am now starting the proceedings of bringing each of these newspapers and the people involved to court for defamation and long-term damage to my name. I am currently searching for an experienced lawyer so my good name can be restored and all involved can learn the lesson of why assumptions cannot be written as fact, especially in the media. http://www.latifyahia.net/news/dirty-tricks-and-media-manipulation

Alan Rusbridger heads up the Guardian, which led on coverage of leaks made by former American intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. "The combination of the use of punitive laws against whistle blowers and inappropriate legislation to silence the work of journalists. I think people in Western governments ought to think about what kind of signal they are sending to the rest of the world by this kind of behaviour," he said via a video link. Earlier this year, British authorities held the partner of the Guardian journalist covering the leaks and reportedly threatened legal action against the newspaper. "Journalists being harassed in a member state of the European Union. For reporting on a situation with an objective interest of the European public. Of the European ordinary citizens. British Newspapers Less Than 24 Hours to Election

00:34
We're less than 24 hours away from the polls opening but the verdict is in on where most of the British newspapers stand. The main papers are split on what people should do on Thursday — some are pushing for another five years for David Cameron as Prime Minister, while others have thrown their weight behind Labour's Ed Miliband, calling for change. The only common ground between the red-tops and broadsheets: dramatic headlines and awkward photos. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/ozT3e-ZQTX0/ http://www.wochit.com

Newspapers Lesson 10 - Learn English via Listening English Level 4

Newspapers Lesson 10 - Learn English via Listening English Level 4 All the great cities in the world now have newspapers. But newspapers, as we know them today, are not that old. The very first newspapers began long after the invention of printing. They started in Europe in the 1600s, and were usually only a couple of pages long. For a long time, newspapers were not very common. Governments didn't want public discussion of their policies and decisions. Often they closed down papers, or taxed them heavily. The "Stamp Tax" on newspapers and pamphlets was one of the causes of the American Revolution. Newspapers began to grow in size when they discovered advertising as a source of income. Nowadays, advertising is the main revenue source for most newspapers. As newspapers became more widely circulated, they could ask for more money for their advertisements. By the late eighteenth century, newspapers were in common use in Europe. The 1800s and early 1900s was the golden age of newspapers. Improvements in transportation, communication and printing processes made it easier to collect news from near and far and to publish papers more quickly and more cheaply. The Weekly Dispatch and the Times, both of London, England, were leading newspapers through much of the 1800s. The Times was one of the first papers to include illustrations. It was the first newspaper to use a steam engine to turn the presses. When the tax on newspapers was reduced in 1836, the Times was able to increase its size considerably. In 1840, it began to use the telegraph to collect news stories. In 1855 the tax on newspapers was finally lifted. The Times made its greatest reputation during the Crimean War between Britain and Russia. British armies, fighting in Russia's Crimean Peninsula, were not only unsuccessful in the war, but were suffering severely from illnesses. The Times sent out the world's first war correspondent, William Howard Russell, in 1854. His reports from the battle lines had a powerful effect on the British public. A War Fund was organized to help the soldiers. Russell forced the government to accept the offer of Florence Nightingale to organize nurses to travel to Crimea. A photographer, Roger Fenton, sent back photos from the war, which were published in the Times. Meanwhile in America, a more popular approach to newspapers had developed. The newspaper had spread west with the pioneers, and nearly every little settlement had its own paper. American newspapers were cheaper and livelier than British ones. They were aimed at the average person, rather than the governing class. Examples of the new style of editing and publishing were Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. Hearst, especially, employed sensational and emotional writing, which aimed at stirring up the public to action. Hearst is sometimes accused of starting the Spanish-American War of 1898 with his over-heated editorials. Nonetheless, his methods were successful in raising circulation and were widely imitated. The modern newspaper contains more than hard news. In fact, news may be a fairly small part of it. Advertisements, gossip, show business, photos of celebrities, sports, stock market prices, horoscopes, comic strips, weather reports and much more are found in its pages. The modern newspaper is a total entertainment package. A question for the future is whether electronic newspapers will replace paper newspapers. ☞ Thanks for watching in Channel Learn Speaking English Fluently Basic! ☞ Please share and like if you enjoyed the video :) thanks so much ♥ ─────────────────── ▶ Please subscribe to update new videos.
