Such ICs are used in digital communication, # In digital communication, it is possible to use multiplexing to merge speech, video and other forms of data for transmission over a common channel. The multiplexing is of various types like Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) or Code Division Multiplexing (CDM). I don’t want to deviate from the current topic, so I will discuss the multiplexing in separate post. # High level of privacy can be obtained in digital communication using data encryption technique. This privacy provides the facility to allow the transmitted signals, to be received only by the permitted receivers. This feature is of great importance in military applications. # In digital communication channel encoding is used. Because of this encoding, there is less accumulation of noise from repeater to repeater, in case of long-distance communication. Apart from this, the digital signals tend to be less affected by noise as compared to analog signals. # It is possible to perform lots of operations on digital signals, like Digital Signal Processing (DSP), data compression, image processing etc. # It is easy to detect and correct errors in digital communication. This easy detection and correction of errors is possible due to the use of channel coding in digital communication. So these were the advantages of using digital communication. These benefits encourage the use of digital communication in place of analog communication. Now we will discuss some disadvantages that are associated with the digital communication. Disadvantages of digital communication # More transmission bandwidth is required in digital communication as compared to analog communication. This is due to the increase in the data rate when analog signal is converted into digital signal. # In digital communication, in case of synchronous modulation, synchronization is required. # Due to various stages used in conversion, high power consumption is another drawback of digital communication. # Sampling error is introduced in the sampling of signal. # Circuits that are used in digital communication are comparatively more complex and sophisticated. So this was the discussion about both advantages and disadvantages of digital communication but it’s worth mentioning that the advantages of using digital communication are more in comparison to disadvantages. Communication electronics can be classified as, (i) Analog communication and (ii) Digital communication In analog communication, analog signals are used. An analog signal is a continuously varying voltage or current. Traditionally, in telephone and radio systems, the messages consisted of information conveyed by voice.Shortcomings of analog communication is also explain in this video. A digital communication system offers many advantages to the user, that cannot be achieved with an analog system. Digital communications system may make use of analog links and concepts.The term data is commonly used in digital communication systems. Data is any form of information, that has been put into digital form, so that it can be handled by a digital system. Advantages (i) The transmission quality is high and almost independent of the distance between the terminals. (ii) The capacity of the transmission system can be increased. This video explains what is modulation and what are the Needs and benefits of modulation in detail. Modulation is a process by which some characteristic (amplitude/frequency/phase) of a high frequency carrier wave is varied, in accordance with the instantaneous value of the message signal (modulating signal/ baseband signal). Now let's write down the benefits of modulation. We will discuss each point in detail one by one- #To remove interference problem #Practical height of the antenna #Possibility of multiplexing #Long distance communication #Improved signal quality at the receiver 1.To Remove Interference Problem Modulation helps in removing the interference problem by allocating a separate frequency band to different signal transmissions. Because of this it becomes possible for many stations to transmit their message signals simultaneously without any interference. Ex. The transmission range for audio signals is 20Hz-20kHz. 2.Practical Height of The Antenna The height of antenna used for transmission and reception of the signal also depends on the process of modulation. The transmitting and receiving Antennas must have lengths, comparable to a quarter wavelength (λ/4) of the frequency used for transmission. To understand how the frequency used for transmission of the signal affects the height of the antenna. As mentioned earlier, height of the antenna should be comparable to λ/4 of the frequency used for transmission. height of the antenna= λ/4 Since we know that- c=λ.f here c is speed of light in vacuum= 3×10^8 m/s f is frequency Therefore λ= c/f So height of the antenna would be- (c/f).(1/4) here c and 1/4 are constants Therefore antenna height is inversely proportional to frequency used for transmission. It means as the frequency of modulation increases, height of the antenna used for transmission decreases. We Will understand it will the help of an example- Here we will see, how the height of the antenna reduced when we increased the frequency used for transmission from 4kHz to 5MHz after modulation. Height= λ/4 =(c/f).(1/4) = (3×10^8 m/s)/(4×10^3Hz)× (1/4) =0.187×10^5 meters = 18.7 kilometers !!! This height of antenna is not practical. After modulation- Frequency used is 5MHz H=(c/f).(1/4) =(3×10^8 m/s)/(5×10^6Hz)× (1/4) =0.15×10^2 meters 15meters It is practical height of the antenna. 3.Possibility of Multiplexing Multiplexing can be Defined as a process by which two or more signals can be transmitted simultaneously over the same channel for communication. Modulation can be used to allocate separate frequency bands by using career waves of different frequencies. This type of multiplexing is known as Frequency division multiplexing (FDM). 4.Long Distance Communication Modulation is used for long distance communication. In modulation we use high frequency carrier wave for transmission of the message signal. High frequency signals attenuate less as compared to low frequency signals. Therefore moderation is beneficial for long distance communication. 5.Improved Signal Quality At The Receiver Some techniques of modulation like Frequency Modulation (FM), Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) have the capability to improve quality of the signal received at the receiving end. So it helps in reducing the noise level in the signal, which is a big advantage of modulation. This video explains basic building blocks of pulse code modulation system like PCM transmitter, PCM receiver and PCM transmission path. In this video you will learn, how the process of low pass filtering, sampling and quantization takes place along with the encoding in the PCM transmitter. PCM is the digital form of pulse modulation technique. This form of pulse modulation technique is known as Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). Pulse code modulation is a technique to convert analog signals into digital signals. After converting the signal into digital form, it becomes possible to transmit the digital signal through digital communication network and at the receiving end, it is converted back into it's original analog form. Pulse code modulation process involves the following three stages #Sampling #Quantization and #Coding Following are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) Advantages of Pulse Code Modulation 1.Very high noise immunity 2.In pulse code modulation repeaters are used between the transmitter and receiver. Repeaters are used to regenerate the received PCM signal. Use of repeaters is possible due to digital nature of the signal. 3.Effect of noise is further reduced due to the use of repeaters. 4.Due to its digital nature we can easily store PCM signals. 5.One more advantage of using PCM is security of the signal. We can use various kinds of coding techniques so that only the desired person can decode the received signal. Disadvantages of Pulse Code Modulation 1.Pulse code modulation requires large bandwidth as compared to other techniques. 2.The encoding, decoding and quantizing circuitry of PCM is quite complex. The digital modulation techniques are amplitude shift keying (ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK) and Phase shift keying (PSK). First of all let's understand, what is modulation? Modulation is a process, where some characteristic of the carrier wave (amplitude, frequency or phase) is varied in accordance with the instantaneous value of the modulating (message or baseband) signal. So if amplitude of the carrier wave is varied, then it is called as amplitude modulation, but if frequency or phase of the carrier wave is varied, according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal, then it is known as frequency modulation or phase modulation respectively. So now let's Understand the basic difference between continuous wave modulation and digital modulation- Difference between Continuous Wave Modulation and Digital Modulation- Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM) and Phase Modulation (PM) are the examples of Continuous Wave (CW) modulation, while Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) and Phase Shift Keying (PSK) are examples of Digital Modulation Techniques. The basic difference between continuous wave Modulation and digital modulation techniques is based on the nature of message signal (modulating signal). In continuous wave modulation, the message signal is of analog nature but in digital modulation, the message signal is of digital nature (Binary or M-ary encoded version). In both of these modulation techniques, the carrier wave is of analog form. Here it is interesting to note that, the three forms of digital modulation techniques that is ASK, FSK and PSK are analogous to AM, FM and PM of continuous wave modulation respectively. So now let's discuss each digital modulation technique (ASK, FSK and PSK) in detail- Amplitude shift keying (ASK) In ASK, the amplitude of the carrier wave is changed (switched) according to the digital input signal (modulating signal). Therefore amplitude shift keying is analogous to Amplitude Modulation (analog modulation). ASK is analogous to AM, because in Amplitude Modulation (AM), amplitude of the carrier wave is changed according to the instantaneous value of the modulating (message) signal, in the same way in ASK also, the amplitude of the carrier wave is switched (varied) according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal (digital input signal). The difference is only of the nature of the modulating signal. In amplitude modulation, the modulating signal is of analog kind but in digital modulation, it is a stream of digital bits. the amplitude of the sinusoidal carrier wave is switched, as per the digital input signal. The carrier wave is either not transmitted or transmitted for digital input signal '0' or '1' respectively. That is why amplitude shift keying (ASK) is also called as "ON - OFF Keying (OOK)". Now we will discuss the Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) If the frequency of sinusoidal carrier wave is varied (switched) as per the digital input signal, then it is known as the frequency shift keying (FSK). It is analogous to frequency modulation (analog modulation). The reason behind why FSK is analogous to FM, is.... In Frequency Modulation (FM), the frequency of the carrier wave is varied according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal, in the same way in frequency shift keying also, the frequency of the sinusoidal carrier wave is varied (switched) as per the digital input signal. The difference is only of the nature of the modulating signal. In FM the modulating signal is of analogue nature while in FSK modulating signal is digital. So here the basic purpose of Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), is to modulate (change/switch) the frequency of the carrier wave, according to the digital input signal. So in Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), we have two types of frequencies of the carrier wave, low frequency for the transmission of '0' and high frequency for the transmission of '1'. In this way, in Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), the information of the digital input signal is present in the frequency variations of the carrier wave. That is why it is known as frequency shift keying. Now let's discuss the Phase Shift Keying (PSK) Phase Shift Keying (PSK) In phase shift keying, phase of the carrier wave (analog) is varied as per the digital input signal. Phase shift keying is analogous to Phase Modulation (analogue phase modulation).
