While the traffic law is over 100 pages in length, the mining law of Cambodia is a mere 20 pages. It was adopted at a time before exploration concessions were introduced. Many believe the law should be amended in order to ensure the transparency and accountability of mineral exploration.

Lithium is the lightest metal on the periodic table. It’s value has been multiplied by 10 in the last two decades alone. And it’s demand doesn’t stop growing. Between 60 and 80% of the world’s known reserves are in an area called the LITHIUM TRIANGLE. This is an area that covers parts of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. In these countries, lithium is abundant and easy to extract. In other words, this part of the planet might soon become the new Saudi Arabia. Despite these reserves Bolivia is exporting less lithium than the other two countries. So what’s going on in Bolivia? Why is no one exploiting their lithium resources? And why is Chile following suit? Today, we are going to answer all of those questions. In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? New 'waka-jumping' legislation has been introduced to Parliament, designed to ensure MPs who resign from a political party can't stay on in the House as independents or members of another party. The bill is part of the coalition deal between Labour and New Zealand First. The practice is also known as party-hopping and some past examples of MPs who left their party but stayed on in Parliament include Peter Dunne, Jim Anderton, several New Zealand First MPs in the late 1990s and a slew of National MPs in the early to mid '90s.The National Party isn't keen on the proposed legislation - its leader Bill English tells Susie Ferguson it puts too much power in the hands of party leaders.

Central government has filed an application before the Supreme Court pleading to place the Goa mining related petitions for early hearing. Central Government in its application has contended that stoppage of mining is not only affecting the mining dependents but it is also causing huge loss to state exchequer. The petitions filed by some mining companies and NGO Goa Foundation are awaiting to be heard by the larger bench and the date of hearing is not fixed yet. Now, Union of India through Under Secretary of Ministry of Mines has filed an application before the Supreme Court pleading to place the Goa mining related petitions for early hearing. Union of India in it's application filed before the Supreme Court has contended that: Mine concessions under the Portuguese Colonial Mining Law was converted into mining lease under Abolition Act Till the legal issues pertaining to rights accruing to the mine concession holders are not decided, the title of the mines will not get clear Hence, directions passed by the Supreme Court would not get implemented in it's letter and sprit Stoppage of mining activity has entailed a very drastic adverse impact on the overall economy of the state It has directly affected the livelihood of mining dependents and indirect mining professionals Pendency of the matter is causing huge loss to state exchequer Any delay in adjudication of the petitions, will further perpetrate legal uncertainty in the Goa mining sector It will not be either public interest or in the interest of Goa PRUDENT MEDIA GOA | Most Popular Goa News Channel Check out latest news on Goa, Politics, Business, Cricket, Technology, Automobile, Lifestyle & Health and Travel. #Goa_news_channel #konkani_news #Konkani_Goa_News_Live_Today Subscribe on youtube ► https://goo.gl/taiJmn More on https://www.prudentmedia.in

This video documents the voices of local people speaking-out against the mining industry that is polluting the rivers and streams that they depend on for their daily lives – for drinking, for washing, for irrigation. For Indigenous Peoples’ in Myanmar water is a fundamental natural resource for all people. Water is the heritage given to the present generation by our ancestors. We believe that our ancestors took great care to manage water resources in order to ensure that our generation has clean water to drink and use in the present time. But now our rivers are being polluted. In Tanintharyi Region of southern Myanmar, newly established resource extraction projects - such as the Eastern Mining Company’s Bawabin tin mine - are causing significant water pollution. Local residents are extremely unhappy with this situation. On 1 January 2015 local residents and civil society organizations conducted a 25km “river-monitoring walk” in order to witness the suffering of local people and to develop recommendations aimed at providing durable solutions to the water pollution problem. "The river is full of sediments due to the mining company. The company doesn't abide by the Myanmar government’s Mining Law or Environmental Protection Rules. The company never follows the laws regarding protection of water resources and rivers. We have reported this situation to the Tanintharyi government, and to the company. But no action has been taken." - Saw Poe Ni, Pauk Dine River Watershed Development Committee

Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Union Parliament continued its session in Nay Pyi Taw, Wednesday. Members of parliament discussed the bill amending Myanma Mining Law that has come into force in 1996 and will expire in 2021. According to the law, foreign and local entrepreneurs are granted to lease mining plots at a 50-year span. While the bill was discussed at Amyotha Hluttaw national parliament session, only heavy mining plots were approved. At this session of the Union Parliament, representatives pointed out the need for medium and small scale miners' involvement in the industry so as to maintain their livelihood and to let them run their own businesses independently if they have adequate technology and capital. They also said that permission to run small and medium scale mining industries can reduce poppy cultivation and that the business needs to bear corporate social responsibilities.
