Beyond the Science: Environmental Problems…Cultural Solutions | Paul K. Doss | TEDxEvansville

13:25
Science is the endeavor that allows us to describe our natural world and how it works. Science gives us the power and knowledge to understand our environment, recognize problems, and quantify threats. But science doesn’t tell us how to use that knowledge. Our planet’s most pressing environmental problems won’t be solved by science. Preserving water resources, facing the immediate and measurable threats from global climate change, reducing waste generation, and solving the myriad environmental challenges facing humans can only be achieved by cultural change. A society represents a collection of individual behaviors…every one of us is responsible for behavioral change. But do we have the personal and political wherewithal to make those changes before we must manage crises? Paul K. Doss is Professor of Geology at the University of Southern Indiana, where he teaches courses on environmental geology, environmental science, geology of national parks, and water resources. Doss directs student research on environmental problems, such as impacts of humans on water resources, natural resources management and geological hazards. He has previously held positions with Yellowstone National Park, Indiana Dunes and Everglades National Park. This video shows serious environmental problems that we are facing nowadays. We did this video with the purpose of making conscious when see it, because it is important that we take accions now that we are on time. At the end of this video you will find seven solutions for helping the environment. Script: When you look at this picture, do you think this is something real? It is hard to accept, but our world is close to look like this. why? What have we done? don’t you know? Don’t worry. Today, we are going to inform you about the 7 main environmental problems that are getting our world sick. Have you ever imagined living in a world like this one? It seems that earlier than we think, this will be our reality. Nowadays, the planet’s natural ecosystems are being severely degraded, putting in danger the ability of the planet to sustain life. Forests, oceans, fresh water systems and other natural ecosystems are all threatened while many others are on the verge of collapse. Water, land and air are getting increasingly polluted, water tables are falling, soil erosion is leading to ‘desertification, global warming is well underway and species of all kinds are dying out one thousand times faster than their natural rate of extinction.

Environment and Natural Resource Management Program

03:14
Climate change and environmental degradation have been escalating on a global scale. This program copes with these issues by developing and demonstrating technologies jointly with research institutes and extension organizations in Asian and African countries as well as local farmers involved. Regarding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural activities, the development of agricultural systems that reduce methane emissions and attain better carbon balance will be promoted through the introduction a water-saving irrigation scheme in paddy fields and through effective linkage of crop and livestock systems. New technologies will be elaborated to reduce crop damage caused by extreme phenomena such as floods and erratic rainfall. In vulnerable regions where land degradation is accelerated and problem soils have expanded, technologies that sustain stable crop yield, in terms of crop improvement, cropping techniques, and soil and water management at a watershed scale, will be developed. The dissemination models will be proposed and demonstrated to apply these new technologies into target areas. The development of breeding materials with enhanced biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) ability will be endeavored for more effective utilization of nitrogen fertilizer and to reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) gas emissions chiefly from cropping uplands and grasslands. https://www.jircas.go.jp/en/program/program_a

Environmental problems

03:48
Environmental problems Introduction : Our Environment is changing. We can not deny that. However, we have to be aware of the problems that our environment was having, most of the environmental problems are causes of humans, and some of the environmental problems are because of natural disasters, warming, climate change, pollution and cooling periods. ‏ Pollution: Pollution of soil, air and water requires hundreds of years to compensate. Exhaust plants and cars are the main cause of pollution, plastic and heavy metals are toxins responsible for contamination. While water pollution is caused by oil spill, acid rain, runoff in urban areas. Air pollution causes various gasses and toxins released by industries and factories and the burning of fossil fuels; soil pollution is the primary cause of industrial waste that deprives the soil of basic foodstuffs. Global Warming: Climate change is indicative of global warming, and its result is human practices such as greenhouse gas emissions. Global warming leads to rising ocean temperatures and the earth's surface, causing sea level rise and the melting of polar ice caps as well as abnormal patterns of precipitation such as sudden flooding, desertification, and excessive snow Natural Resource Depletion: Exhaustion of natural resources poses other environmental problems. The consumption of fossil fuels leads to the emission of greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. Globally, people are making efforts to switch to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biogas and geothermal. The cost of installing and maintaining infrastructure has declined in recent years . Climate Change: Climate change is another environmental problem in the past decades. This is due to the rise in global warming caused by atmospheric warming due to the burning of fuel and harmful gasses by industries. Climate change also has various but not limited adverse effects Polar ice melting, new diseases, season change, frequent floods, and change in the general weather scenario. Environmental issues in the use: In the UAE are the reason for the exploitation of natural resources, rapid population growth, and high energy demand. The continued warming of global warming contributes to water scarcity, drought, sea level rise and drought in the United Arab Emirates. The countryside in the United Arab Emirates, characterized by its great arid lands, rare rainfall, high temperatures, long-term droughts [1]. This precondition is very vulnerable to the effects of climate change and contributes to worsening water scarcity, quality and water pollution the solution of Environmental problems: Sustainability is key to preventing the impact of environmental issues. There is scientific evidence that mankind is living unsustainably and that everyone needs an unprecedented effort to restore the human use of natural resources to sustainable borders. For people to live naturally, natural resources of the Earth must be used at a rate that can be renewed and reduce global warming. Environmental concerns have led to the formation of Green parties and political parties seeking to address environmental issues. Initially, these were formed in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany but are now present in many other countries

Environmental Problem |Pressing Environmental Issues and Their Impacts

02:03
In recent years, technology has gained rapid development. But as more and more human activities take the advantage of and even exploit the environment and natural resources, the surroundings gradually get worse... Species extinction, global warming, glacier melting , air pollution and other environmental problems are the result of human practices and such problems will affect every human, animal on the planet. We may be used to the graceful environment today. However, can you imagine one day that human kind will live in a deserted area and even cannot get some fresh air? These horrible scene in the video urges us to value and protect our environment. If we do not enhance the awareness of environmental protection and tackle the problems, we will one day lose beautiful planet. Environmental issues are complex. They require a wide gamut of competencies to be successfully addressed. The bachelor of science degree in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources prepares students to examine conservation issues through a multi-disciplinary lens that takes into account an issue’s political, socio-economic and ecological dimensions. Students in the HDNR degree gain skills to see a conservation issue through the eyes of varied stakeholders, to understand perspectives of an issue that may be different than their own, and how to work effectively with others in order to collaboratively address environmental issues. The B.S. in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources is offered by The Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources in the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University.

Video #16 Environmental Impacts of Tourism (10 narrated slides, 6:46)

06:46
Link: https://youtu.be/GTPYKQ3Jlcc Script - V-16 Environmental Impacts of Tourism (Cut) Link: Slide #1: Welcome to video #16 in my series of presentations that will attempt to “demystify tourism”. I’m Dr. Stan McGahey, the creator and narrator of the videos. Their content is based on my experiences worldwide as a professor, consultant, writer, manager, and tourist in more than 80 countries on 6 continents. Slide #2: Tourism’s environmental impacts, including those on land, water, and air; plants and animals; and diverse ecosystems, come from three basic sources. First is everything the tourism industry does to develop its infrastructure, facilities, and products. Second is everything it does to operate them profitably by attracting and satisfying tourists. And, third are those created by the attitudes, behaviors, and actions of the tourists themselves. Slide #3: Among tourism’s main positive impacts are its ability to educate tourists about the environment and deepen their appreciation and concern for it. This new generation of environmentally-aware tourists, ranges from green tourists who are vocal about their expectations of environmental best practices, to ecotourists who take their demands into the more remote and pristine corners of the world. Slide #4: When the primary attractions or settings are based on environmental resources, locals learn to value their environment and take better care of it. Tourism helps promote conservation of natural resources because they are now seen as assets that earn revenue by generating entrance fees and creating jobs. A special tax is often charged that is dedicated to financing conservation. Slide #5: National parks, have achieved great success, in preserving and showcasing the natural beauty and biodiversity around the world, as have programs, such as UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere, and its World Heritage Sites for Nature. Many other parks, marine reserves, and protected areas also conserve the environment, and provide a setting for outdoor activities. Without tourism to lobby for these protected areas and provide funding, much less be set aside and supported, by local communities. Slide #6: As the environment became a major thrust in many destinations in the last quarter of the 20th century, the tourism industry developed concepts such as ecotourism, responsible tourism, and sustainable tourism. High-profile organizations have been founded to develop and promote these concepts, such as The International Ecotourism Society and the Adventure Travel Trade Association. Slide #7: Tourism’s three main negative impacts are its physical impacts, pollution, and loss of natural resources. As tourism continues to develop everywhere, it involves a great deal of construction, from clearing land and building infrastructure for lodges and resorts, to opening hiking trails and ski runs, to widening roads, expanding airports, and dredging seaports, that transform the physical environment. Some tourism businesses operate in a “green”, sustainable manner. Others, look for short-term profit, and ignore environmental best practices. Governments are also guilty when they pass laws, yet fail to enforce them or eliminate exemptions. Slide #8: Tourism development clears land and often causes deforestation, as facilities are built to support tourism. Water is scarce in many cities and islands. Tourists worsens the problem since tourists often use much more water per day that the typical local person, and attractions such as golf courses and theme parks use large amounts of water for their operations. Communities must make wise decisions in regards to the type of destinations they allow to be developed, based on the capability of their natural resources. Slide #9: Tourism used to be touted as the ”Industry without smokestacks”, which is still true in theory. But it is also true, in fact, that tourism can be a major source of pollution. Among the forms of pollution attributed to the tourism industry are air, noise, water, sewage, and solid waste pollution. Vehicles, both on-road and off-road, contribute to air and noise pollution, as well oil pollution. Lodging and dining facilities are often responsible for chemical pollution. Littering despoils the environment, as do architectural and visual pollution. Slide #10: When properly planned and operated, tourism is an alternative source of revenue in destinations that might otherwise turn to extractive industries that pillage their environment. But tourism must do its part also, or it will damage the very resources that tourists come to see, and in effect, “Kill the goose that lays the golden egg”. Establishing and adhering to the physical carrying capacity within each destination will help limit the negative environmental impacts of tourism. Now, I invite you to watch Video #18: Three Tourism Carrying Capacities. Thank you!

Water Resources

005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language?
