Science is the endeavor that allows us to describe our natural world and how it works. Science gives us the power and knowledge to understand our environment, recognize problems, and quantify threats. But science doesn’t tell us how to use that knowledge. Our planet’s most pressing environmental problems won’t be solved by science. Preserving water resources, facing the immediate and measurable threats from global climate change, reducing waste generation, and solving the myriad environmental challenges facing humans can only be achieved by cultural change. A society represents a collection of individual behaviors…every one of us is responsible for behavioral change. But do we have the personal and political wherewithal to make those changes before we must manage crises? Paul K. Doss is Professor of Geology at the University of Southern Indiana, where he teaches courses on environmental geology, environmental science, geology of national parks, and water resources. Doss directs student research on environmental problems, such as impacts of humans on water resources, natural resources management and geological hazards. He has previously held positions with Yellowstone National Park, Indiana Dunes and Everglades National Park. Major issues related to environmental pollution and depletion of valuable natural resources are discussed in this video in very simple student friendly language and in HINDI. The video will help a lot scoring high in Board Exam and Pre Medical Tests. Visit the site given below for purchasing our lecture videos: https://concept-tutorials.teachable.com Environmental Issues | Biology Class 12 Pollution: Any undesirable change in physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, water or soil. Control of Air Pollution: 1. Electrostatic Precipitator: It removes particulate matter present in exhaust from thermal power plant. ü It has electrode wires that release electrons. ü These electrons attach to dust particles giving them negative charge. ü These negatively charged particles are passed through positively charged collecting plates. Thus, dust particles settle on collecting plates. 2. Scrubber removes gases like SO2. In a scrubber, the exhaust is passed through spray of water or lime (CaO). 3. Catalytic Converter: Expensive metals like Pt, Pd and Rd as catalyst are fitted into automobiles for reducing emission of poisonous gases. As the exhaust passes through catalytic converter, unburnt hydrocarbons are converted into CO2 and H2O, carbon monoxide and Nitric oxides are changed to CO2 and N2 gas respectively. Water Pollution: Domestic sewage and industrial effluents: ü Solids are relatively easy to remove, dissolved salts such as nitrates, phosphates, toxic metal ions and organic compounds are very difficult to be removed. ü Microbes involved in biodegradation of organic matter in water body consume a lot of oxygen and as a result, there is a sharp decline in dissolved O2 at the point of sewage discharge. This causes mortality of fish and other aquatic organisms. ü Presence of large amount of nutrient in water causes excessive growth of free floating algae called algal bloom. Algal blooms cause deterioration of water quality and increase in fish mortality. Some algae are extremely toxic to human beings and other animals. ü Eichhornia (terror of Bengal) also grows abundantly in eutrophic water bodies. ü Sewage from hospitals contains many undesirable pathogenic microbes which may cause outbreak of serious diseases like typhoid, cholera, jaundice, etc. ü Waste water from industries contains toxic substances and heavy metals like Hg, Pb, etc. Bio magnification refers to increase in concentration of toxic substance at successive trophic levels. It happens because most of the toxic substances are lipid soluble and thus accumulated by organic matter. High concentrations of DDT disturb Ca metabolism in birds which causes thinning of egg shell and their premature breaking eventually causing decline in bird's population. Eutrophication: ü It is natural ageing of a lake due to nutrient enrichment of its water. ü However, pollutants from human activities radically accelerate the ageing process. This phenomenon is called cultural or accelerated eutrophication. ü Prime contaminants are nitrates and phosphates which act as plant nutrients. ü They over stimulate growth of algae, resulting in algal blooms and decrease concentration of water dissolved O2 which is vital to other aquatic organisms. ü Other pollutants in lake may poison whole population of fish whose decomposing remains further deplete water's dissolved O2 content. Thus the lake is choked to death. Organic Farming: ü Integrated organic farming is a cyclical, zero waste procedure where waste products from one process are cycled in as nutrients for other processes. ü This allows maximum utilisation of resources and increases efficiency of production. ü The process includes beekeeping, dairy management, water harvesting, composting and agriculture which support each other and are extremely economical and sustainable. ü Cattle excreta are used as manures. ü Crop waste is used to create compost which can be used as natural fertilizers. O3 layer in Atmosphere: ü The stratospheric or good O3 protects life on earth from UV radiations. It acts as a shield absorbing UV radiations from the sun. Ozone Hole: There is balance between production and degradation of O3 in the atmosphere. The balance has been disrupted due to enhancement of O3 degradation by CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons). Ozone Hole over Antarctica: ü Every year, O3 hole is formed over Antarctica during spring of Southern Hemisphere (Sept- Oct). ü O3 depleting substances released by industrialised countries of Europe, North America, Russia and Japan reach stratosphere from where they are pushed towards poles by winds. ü During winter, there is no sunlight which is required for reaction between Cl and O3. Sunlight is available during spring when ozone depletion occurs on a large scale. So, if economics is about choices and how we use our resources, econ probably has a lot to say about the environment, right? Right! In simple terms, pollution is just a market failure. The market is producing more pollution than society wants. This week, Adriene and Jacob focus on the environment, and how economics can be used to control and reduce pollution and emissions. You'll learn about supply and demand, incentives, and how government intervention influences the environment. Crash Course is on Patreon! Living within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future. Human prosperity need not cost the earth. Living sustainably is about doing more and better with less. It is about knowing that rising rates of natural resource use and the environmental impacts that occur are not a necessary by-product of economic growth. Directed by Leonardo Dalessandri

The questions Annika works with are related to how we can get people to travel in a more eco-friendly manner or how we can get people to accept different necessary policies directed towards dampening the effects of environmentally harming behavior. The common denominator for all these questions is the investigation of how attitudinal factors, personal resources, contextual factors, and habits/routines affects related thoughts, intentions and behaviors. Annika Nordlund is associate professor in psychology. Director of Research, Transportation Research Unit (TRUM), Umeå University. She is interested in the human dimension of the environmental problems in the world. Her research interest is broadly found within the areas of environmental and social psychology and more specifically within the influence of psychological factors in different types of environmentally relevant behavior. This video shows serious environmental problems that we are facing nowadays. We did this video with the purpose of making conscious when see it, because it is important that we take accions now that we are on time. At the end of this video you will find seven solutions for helping the environment. Script: When you look at this picture, do you think this is something real? It is hard to accept, but our world is close to look like this. why? What have we done? don’t you know? Don’t worry. Today, we are going to inform you about the 7 main environmental problems that are getting our world sick. Have you ever imagined living in a world like this one? It seems that earlier than we think, this will be our reality. Nowadays, the planet’s natural ecosystems are being severely degraded, putting in danger the ability of the planet to sustain life. Forests, oceans, fresh water systems and other natural ecosystems are all threatened while many others are on the verge of collapse. Water, land and air are getting increasingly polluted, water tables are falling, soil erosion is leading to ‘desertification, global warming is well underway and species of all kinds are dying out one thousand times faster than their natural rate of extinction.
