Which trading platform or broker would you recommend for a new trader?
Which trading platform or broker would you recommend for a new trader? ★ SUMMARY ★ There’s no such thing as the best broker It’s not that one specific broker is the best broker. Just like choosing a car, whether that’s a convertible, a sedan, a van, a truck, every car vehicle is going to be different for that type of person along with the different color choices and options that you want. It is going to come down to the type of trading that you personally do. The cheapest is not always the best choice Typically, initially, most people choose a broker based on fees, meaning commission rates, they want to choose lower commission rates, but this is not always the best way to choose a broker. Customer support is important Look for the cheapest after you have the experience Most brokers will negotiate their rates Posted at: http://investinghelpdesk.com/26-which-trading-platform-or-broker-would-you-recommend-for-a-new-trader ★ SHARE THIS VIDEO ★ https://youtu.be/07uu5F_MTEY ★ SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE: ★ http://bit.ly/addtradersfly ★ ABOUT TRADERSFLY ★ TradersFly is a place where I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience about the stock market, trading, and investing. How to Invest in ETFs
In my last video, I already decided which ETFs I will be investing in. But how do I go about actually purchasing them? Well, you need to choose a broker. I use an online, commission-free broker called SelfWealth who only have a flat $9.50 fee per trade. That’s a pretty good deal. I’ve already decided that I am investing in these four ETFs – 25% in each of VAS, VGS, VGAD, and VAE. Just say I have $100,000 in total to invest. There’s a couple of schools of thought here. I could buy them all on the same day in a lump-sum, $25000 in each. That would have the benefit of saving on brokerage – four trades for a total of $38. If the market were to go up, which on average it does, then it would be best for me to invest in this manner. However, what if unbeknownst to me, the market is actually at a peak now? (A real possibility based on recent events). Then I would be investing all my money into a falling market. So probably the better option in this case would be to put my money in over time, say $5000 every month – a process known as dollar-cost averaging. This assumes that the average investor, like myself, can’t time the market, so there’s no use trying. For me, I started with an initial investment in January of $5000 in each of my ETFs. The reason I picked $5000 is that that’s a fairly good trade-off with regard to brokerage. $9.50 of $5000 is only 0.19% – a fairly reasonable one-off fee. I wouldn’t recommend lower than $5000, but that’s up to you. Then, every month thereafter, I put in a one-off $5000 investment into my lowest value ETF. So in February, just say the ETFs have the following values, then I would put $5000 into VGAD. In March, I would put $5000 into VAS as it has the lowest value. I choose the ETF with the lowest overall value for two reasons. First, it keeps my portfolio reasonably well-balanced. If I keep putting money into say the highest performing ETF, then very quickly my 25% target allocation would go out the window. Secondly, buying the lowest price ETF will give the most bang for my buck, that is, I’ll be able to buy more units on average. So each month, I’m planning to invest $5000 into the lowest value fund until I’ve fully invested my $100,000. From that point onwards, I will invest $5000 whenever it becomes available. So maybe once every three or four months depending on how much I can save. Although mathematically speaking, a lump-sum investment may be the better option, Vanguard’s Robin Bowerman said it well in defence of dollar-cost averaging. “Dollar-cost averaging provides a means to resist any temptation to try to time the market. Attempts at market timing often result in following the investment herd by buying when prices are high while selling when prices are low. As humans we are not wired that way and behavioral economics research tells us that as investors we often 'misbehave' ... that is why dollar-cost averaging makes sense in tough/volatile markets. It keeps people in the game." Moneychimp.com also said it well, “If the market dips, people will be happy because dollar-cost averaging will be saving them money, and if the market goes up, people will be happy regardless.” So from a psychological perspective, dollar-cost-averaging makes sense. Now for today’s take-home message: 1. Choose a low-cost broker such as SelfWealth. 2. Invest regularly. Invest your money over time to make the most of dollar-cost averaging. That doesn’t mean you have to invest every week or month. Once a quarter is also a good option. 3. Don’t try to time the market. The majority of people get it wrong. And that leads to my final point: 4. Only buy, never sell! ETFs are for investment. If you want to trade frequently, become a day trader. We’re here to make money over the long-term. Sure, there will be some days where the markets go down and you’ll feel like you want to sell everything. But don’t! Keep hold of your ETFs and ultimately, you’ll reap the rewards. The current yield has gone up and if you want protection from declining yields and low inflation, you might want to look at bonds. This does not mean a financial crisis will come but a proper portfolio strategy should hold bonds and a 2.4% yield is attractive. Nobody knows whether the FED will be able to deliver on its projected policy measures but being prepared to anything is always good. Perhaps a Treasury bond or ETF will be the best investment or stock in 2018. I discuss why a bond ETF might be a good hedge for your portfolio by analyzing macroeconomic factors affecting the American economy,
What do I do? Full-time independent stock market analyst and researcher: https://sven-carlin-research-platform.teachable.com/p/stock-market-research-platform Check the comparative stock list table on my Stock market research platform under curriculum preview! I am also a book author: Modern Value Investing book: https://amzn.to/2lvfH3t More about me and some written reports at the Sven Carlin blog: https://svencarlin.com Stock market for modern value investors Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/modernvalueinvesting/ The predominant investment strategy is to invest in index funds which means that you own an index like the S&P 500, which is a basket of the 500 biggest businesses traded in the U.S. Owning part of the 500 best businesses in the U.S. is not a bad thing but there are a few things you should know before allocating your hard-earned money to index funds. 1) Investing in index funds is extremely risky You probably read that many, even Warren Buffett says that investing in index funds is the best way to invest. However, there are many catches that go along that statement. The first thing many forget to talk about is the risk of investing in index funds. The S&P 500 has dropped 49% in 2001 and 57% in 2009. Such huge drops are extremely indicative of what can happen. And, it will certainly happen again sometimes in the future. In both cases the S&P 500 recovered but there is absolutely no guarantee that it will do so after the next drop. For example, after the 1920s bull market, it took the S&P 500 25 years to return to the previous level. There are also many periods of more than 10 years where stock market returns haven’t really been positive. From 2000 to 2013, from 1968 to 1982, just to give a few examples. If we adjust the returns for inflation, the periods where the actual return is zero are even longer; 2000 to 2016, 1966 to 1994 and what is also staggering is that from 1927 to 1982, inflation adjusted stock market returns have been negative. There is only one way to properly invest in index funds and it is a good strategy if you can stick to it for your whole life. Only if you dollar cost average your investments into index funds, you will do fine over the very long term. Dollar cost averaging means that you invest a fixed amount every month no matter what is going on in the market. This way you invest when things go well but also when things don’t go that well, which is the key. If you look back to the above chart, those who invested in 1931, 1940, 1982, 2009 have reaped the best investing returns. As it is impossible to time the market, dollar cost averaging is the only way to properly invest in index funds. However, few have the discipline to do so over the long term. A dollar cost averaging strategy works only if you keep investing through thin. This means that it is essential to invest when there is blood in the streets. Blood in the streets means that most others are selling in panic of what might happen next and nobody wants any kind of relation with stocks. A similar situation happened in 2001 and 2009. Those who have been constantly investing in stocks during the last 10 or 20 years, month after month, did well. However, if you stop investing during a recession because you prefer to safe a bit of cash in case you get fired, then index investing should be completely avoided because extremely risky and will lead to bad returns. As simple as a dollar cost averaging strategy might solve the issue. Where did the 5.4% yearly difference go? Well, it was eaten up by fees and by the fact that most invest in stocks at the wrong time and usually sell at the wrong time too. Most investors buy high and sell low. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand that investing in index funds works only if you stick to such an investment strategy for 40 years and add money constantly, month per month and reinvest the dividends without exception. The sad part is that, very few manage to apply such a strategy through life and that is something you should really see whether you can do. If you can’t invest when the stock market is down, or even worse, have to pull your funds out of the stock market when there is a crash, index investing certainly isn’t for you. 2) Dividends are extremely low As shown in figure 3, inflation adjusted stock market returns aren’t that stellar. Over the last 90 years those have been just shy of 2% per year. The biggest benefit from investing in the stock market in the last 90 years has come from dividends. The problem is that those dividends are at historical lows now.

Best Stock Broker Canada 2018 is here to help you pick the right stock broker for you. I made a Best Broker of 2018 for my USA viewers, but my Canadian viewers don't have the same options and I cover ALL your options here in this video. So #1 we have Questrade Inc. Pros: -Excellent customer service -Decent Mobile app -no account fees -Easy to open and setup account -Commission of 1c/share with 4.95/trade minimum and 9.99 max Cons: -minimum balance of $1000 -24.95/quarter inactivity fee if you hold less than $5000 -Not good for charting or research unless you purchase the trading platform Questrade is probably the best broker available to Canadians - there are fees for lower account balances but they have a competitive commission structure and excellent customer service. The #2 pick is QTrade. Pros: -Good option for young investors -$7.75/trade -under $25000 account balance, quarterly fee is waived -Requirements: -An offer for investors aged 18 to 30 -To qualify, simply add $50 or more a month to a Qtrade Investor account by setting up automatic pre-authorized contributions. Cons: -Not available to everyone -Need to keep adding in $50 a month to be eligible, but can't exceed $25000 to still use commission structure QTrade is a good option for those that want to get started in investing but don't meet Questrade's $1000 minimum. The no quarterly fees under 25000 account is good to keep more savings in your pocket. However once your account grows to close to 25000, I would consider switching to Questrade. Thank you for watching! Don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE if you haven't done so already to support the channel - it means a lot to me! How to invest in a stocks and shares Isa | Invest your money | Money Talks
Hi, in this video I'm going to look at how to invest in a stocks and shares Isa. Now, for this video I'm assuming you already know about stocks and shares Isas, and cash Isas, and the rules for how much money you can put into each one. If you want to find out more about the rules, check out my video, the Isa Revolution 2014. But I'm assuming today that you've already figured out the rules and you've decided you do want to invest in money in the stock market, and you want to put it in the stocks and shares Isa tax wrapper. So now you've made that decision, you want to know how you're actually going to make that investment. What are the nuts and bolts? Well, the first step is to pick your investment platform. These platforms are sometimes named as fund supermarkets and that's a really good description because basically an investment platform is a shop where you can invest your money in a wide range of different possible investments. Fund supermarkets are slightly misleading though, because it's not just funds you can invest in. You can also invest in investment trusts and in individual shares. So, the great thing about investment platforms is that they give you all this choice. The charges are cheap, you can manage your investments online and the platform does all the boring admin for you. The dividends - if you get any dividends - are paid straight in to your online platform account. The best known investment platform is probably Hargreaves Landowner. It's definitely the biggest player in the UK market and it offers good customer service, a really nice website and it's got a very strong brand. The trouble with Hargreaves Landowner is the platform charges you'll be paying are higher than pretty much all of the company’s rivals. So, you may want to go elsewhere and pick a platform that's cheaper. Now sadly I can't just recommend one platform for everyone. It depends on your circumstances, how much money you're going invest, are you going to invest in funds, in shares, or a combination of the two. Depending on your approach different platforms will work best. If you want to research all the leading platforms, check out our online brokers cost comparison table and you should get a feel for all the top guys. Having said that, I know that you probably just want me to give a couple of names. So, here are two names of good reputable platforms. One is Charles Stanley, another one isAJ Bell You Invest. The charges are low on both platforms and they're run by reputable companies, so you should get a decent service. So, we've not chosen the platform. The next step is how you're actually going to invest. What kind of stocks and shares are you going to buy? The classic thing to do - the easiest thing to do if you like - is to put your money into an index tracker fund. These are funds that track a particular index. So, if you put your money in a FTSE 100 tracker index, you would effectively buy in shares in all of the hundred largest companies on the London stock market. Then if the FTSE 100 goes up by 10%, your index tracker fund should go up by roughly 10% too. One of the best UK index trackers is the HSBC FTSE All Share Index. It's got an annual charge of 0.17% - nice and low. With this fund, you won't be invested in just the hundred largest companies on the London stock market, it'll be more like 600 companies. So, as that index goes up, your investment should go up too. Just to be clear though, you won't just pay the 0.17% charge, you'll also pay a charge to the platform, whether Hargreaves Lansdown, Charles Stanley or whoever. The platform charges typically will be between 0.25% and 0.45%, but it does vary depending what you're investing in. Now, this fund isn't the only cheap way to invest in the UK stock market. You could also go for an ETF – an exchange traded fund. These are very similar to the ordinary investment funds, but then also a bit like a share that traded on the stock market so it's really easy to buy and sell. There's one really cheap UK ETF which just tracks the FTSE 100. It's the Vanguard FTSE 100 UCITS ETF - its charges are even lower than the HSBC index tracker. It's just 0.1% a year. Having said all that, both of the funds I've just recommended are great.
