Ethereum Hackers Guessing Private Keys! In this video I discuss a recent paper researching how hackers are guessing Ethereum private keys. In theory this vulnerability affects any cryptocurrency that allows you to generate weak private keys. #Ethereum #Hackers #Security https://www.securityevaluators.com/casestudies/ethercombing/ 🎓 Learn more about Nugget’s Crypto Community: https://nuggetsnews.com.au/nuggets-crypto-community/ 🎧 Nugget's Crypto Podcast : http://nuggetsnews.com.au/podcast 👫👭👬Socials Facebook: http://fb.me/NuggetsNews Twitter: https://twitter.com/NuggetsNewsAU LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/NuggetsNews Instagram: http://instagram.com/NuggetsNewsAU Reddit: https://steemit.com/@NuggetsNews 📬 Join our Mailing List: https://nuggetsnews.com.au/newsletter/ 📲 Contact Us: http://bit.ly/2tHKKwN 🇦🇺 Own Cryptocurrency in your Self Managed Super Fund https://newbrightoncapital.com/nugget ("NUGGET" When completing the application) 🇦🇺Australian Crypto Tax: https://cryptotaxaus.com.au/nuggets-news/ or mention: 'Nugget's News' for 10% discount. 🏦 Need to purchase/sell large amounts of crypto? https://calebandbrown.com/ (Discount code: Nugget's News) 🎤 Hire me to Speak: https://www.linkedin.com/in/AlexSaundersAU/ 👕 Crypto Clothing: http://shrsl.com/nf7o 🔐 Secure your crypto Ledger: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/r/f536 Trezor: https://shop.trezor.io?a=esyfabvzr6zu Ecomi: https://securewallet.shop/products/secure-wallet (Discount Code: NUGGET) 🏦 Some of my favourite places to buy & trade coins: Coinspot: https://www.coinspot.com.au?affiliate=YNV53 Abra: Get $25 free when you sign up to trade with Abra & deposit $5 or more: https://invite.abra.com/CY0netIemV Bitmex: https://www.bitmex.com/register/NFIXYP Coinbase: https://www.coinbase.com/join/54152b230bf6fa71dd000002 Binance: https://www.binance.com/?ref=10788816 Binance EU: https://www.binance.je/?ref=35028437 KuCoin: https://www.kucoin.com/#/?r=188MQ Huobi: https://www.huobi.com.au/invite-success?invite_code=j4223 BiBox: https://www.bibox.com/signPage?id=11468551&lang=en BitFinex: https://www.bitfinex.com/?refcode=FJfGA79ciH EthFinex: https://www.ethfinex.com/?refcode=FJfGA79ciH The Chart Guys: 🎓 Crypto Trading Course: Discount code: Nugget10 https://www.chartguys.com/courses/crypto/?ref=5 🎓 Crypto Alerts System: Discount code: NUGGY10 https://crypto.chartguys.com?af=539351d975 Trader Cobb: Advanced Trading Courses: Discount code: TCNUGGET10 🎓https://www.tradercobb.com/cryptocurrency-education-courses/ Disclaimer: I AM NOT A LICENSED FINANCIAL ADVISOR. Private Key Finders, Private Key Generators, Deriving Private Key from Public Key.

07:08
A quick search of YouTube will find a huge number of tools that claim to be Private Key Finders, Private Key Generators or to be able Deriving Private Key from Public Key. The folk who often get taken in by these scams are those who have lost their private keys, lost access to their bitcoin, or are perhaps simply looking for a way to get some free Bitcoin. Either way, this scam prays on the fact that potential victims don't understand the technology enough to spot an obvious fake. Don't have a hardware wallet? Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc) Get a Ledger: https://shop.ledger.com?r=5243ecbb8427 (If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S) --------------------- If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc. For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: https://www.coinbase.com/join/5691c9d0a4c3a05dfa000151 For Trading, just start with Binance: https://www.binance.com/?ref=18111926 By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap) If this was helpful, feel free to send me a tip: BTC: 37hiiSB1Poj6Shs8WawPS2HjT2jzHkFSQi LTC: MRWnUcsyofisVp5GvX7nxMog5caneycKZ6 ETH: 0x14b2E26021d0Ce8E2cE6a2Eb6E2690714bB18E17 VTC: vtc1qxauv20r2ux2vttrjmm9eylshl508q04uju936n ZEN: znUihTHfwm5UJS1ywo911mdNEzd9WY9vBP7 ------Notes------ Crypto Scam Watch Private Key Finders So you have lost your recovery phrase, private key, etc... That sucks... You are likely sad, angry, desperate... There are people out there who want to make money off these feelings... Private Key Finding/Generating Services Services that claim to have software, hardware, etc, to be able to calculate a private key from a public address. Their model is generally quite straight forward... 1. You Contact them... 2. They reply and you have to pay for some software, or send them some information... (Maybe your 24 word seed, if they manage to recover your 24 word seed, they keep the funds...) 3. They may reply and have some "partial success" and encourage you to pay more... (Maybe they will send you a private key that they generated with a small amount of funds attached to it) 4. They may send you some software to install that will infect your computer so that they can scam you in some other way... (Perhaps searching your computer and stealing the rest of your crypto) 5. If/when their software/service/whatever doesn't work, they say "what a shame" and keep all the money that you have paid to them. Simply put, these services exist to exploit your sense of dispair, to offer false hope and scam you some more while you are most vulnerable... Quick Background Knowledge Bit… Understand the basics of public keys and private keys… How is Wallet Recovery, Seed Phrase Recovery, Passphrase Recovery different? These all rely on having most of your private keys intact. They are essentially doing "trial and error" on what the missing part could be and using an existing public address to check whether it is correct. There are computational limits to how much of a gap is recoverable... The Unfortunate Reality ⦁ Just being able to see your balance doesn't mean you can get to it... ⦁ It's not that different to being able to look through a telescope and see a distant star... Just because you can see it, doesn't mean that you can just magically go there. (At least with technology as we understand it today) ⦁ While you may be able to see a shadow cast by something, that doesn’t allow you to recreate the object that cast it… ⦁ If someone did work out how to compute a private key from a public address, all crypto would be almost instantly worthless... ⦁ The way that sharing a public address without revealing anything about the private key is the key technology that makes crypto work... (And all public/private key cryptography) ⦁ If someone did have this tech, why wouldn’t they simply grab a few BTC from Satoshi’s wallet? (Untouched for years) How You Can Stay Safe... ⦁ Store your cryptocurrencies on one BIP39/44 Compatible wallet, rather than having dozens of different "coin specific" wallets. (This could include a hardware wallet like a Ledger or Trezor, software like Coinomi, or a paper wallet created with Ian Coleman's tool.) ⦁ Store the 24 word seed for the above wallet in a secure place ⦁ Ensure that you have run a test recovery on this 24 word seed ⦁ Familiarise yourself with some of the tools and processes that can be used to recover from a mistake in your 24 word seed or passphrase. What to do when you spot a scam? Report it to YouTube, Facebook, etc.

Blockchain 101 - Part 2 - Public / Private Keys and Signing

08:54
This is part two in my basic visual introduction to the concepts behind a blockchain. We build on the concepts from the previous video and introduce public / private key pairs and signing using an interactive web demo. If you missed it, part 1 is here: https://youtu.be/_160oMzblY8 If you are interested in playing with this on your own, it is available online at: http://anders.com/blockchain/public-private-keys/ The code that runs this demo is also on GitHub: https://github.com/anders94/public-private-key-demo If you want to know more about how public key cryptography works, see the Wikipedia page on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography The details of how public keys relate to private keys are hard to summarize, but it has to do with Euler's theorem. Basically, using Euler's theorem there is some math you can do to a number given some parameters (which I'll call the public key) which allows someone with some other parameters (which I'll call the private key) to decipher the original number without having to do brute force factorization because there is a shortcut way to find the phi of a prime number. Rather than me butchering the explanation, check this video series out for a more detailed explanation: https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computer-science/cryptography/modern-crypt/v/the-fundamental-theorem-of-arithmetic-1 I'm @anders94 on Twitter and @andersbrownworth on Steemit. Blockchain tutorial 11: Elliptic Curve key pair generation

18:58
This is part 11 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining how the generate a public private key using Elliptic Curve. In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. Get your private key from your 24 word recovery phrase without Ledger Nano

04:20
How can you recover your Ledger Wallet without a Ledger Nano S? You use this procedure at your own risk! Overview of this video 1.Bitcoin a. Restore public address and private key for Bitcoin b. Check the address and private key and print optionally a paper wallet 2. Ethereum a. Restore public address and private key for Ethereum b. Check the address and private key You can recover your keys without a Ledger Nano S This video shows how you get the public and private key of Bitcoin and Ethereum from your leder 24 words recovery phrase. My recovery phrase: This is only for testing. I don't use this seed. gold wagon iron scatter asset glare boy valley fit pony end volume soup shed elder brown museum gas blanket icon strong ill face dice Buy the Ledger Nano S: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/r/9054 Tools from Github: https://github.com/Coinomi/bip39 https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39 https://github.com/cantonbecker/bitcoinpaperwallet Update 14.10.17: I have observed the following on BTC. Probably the same for Ethereum: The ledger nano s is using multiple receiving addresses. This means each time something is transferred to your new public address; a new receiving address is shown on the ledger wallet. You can use the old or new one. In my example phrases for BTC I have the following public addresses: Path Address m/44'/0'/0'/0/0 1L4w71doDD9JVS8LrTBAyYCsn2rjeSXr3c m/44'/0'/0'/0/1 1NRyjtSdHdJxUXa6zNjnD8mC718sMhHJYh m/44'/0'/0'/0/2 14mFMXqE4TGnGpgt36fzR9pCYPGA12bj4d m/44'/0'/0'/0/3 12qeFoQkkssWt497Pk9GYiuDfLoLx9eNzi etc. If you have an empty wallet and you haven’t used the receive address, the ledger wallet shows the address of path m/44/*/0. If you transfer the first amount to this address, the next time you click on your receiving address in the ledger wallet is shown the address for path m/44/*/1. If you transfer now something to path m/44/*/0 , the shown public receiving address keeps at m/44/*/1. Next time you send something on path m/44/*/1, the receiving address is updated again. And so on. The wallet shows the sum of all your receiving addresses. Be aware of this behavior in case that you use different receiving address, that you remember either the phrases or all of your private addresses of the used paths. I hope this is useful. Update Bitcoin Gold: If you have your bitcoins on your ledger wallet before the 25th of October then everything is fine. You will also get this amount in BTG. If you want transfer BTG immediately after the hard fork and in case that the ledger nano SW is not ready for BTG. You can use your private key together with the Bitcoin Gold adaption of the bitcoin-core app. Be careful on Bitcoin Gold transfers. BTG has no strong replay protection. Please inform you, how you can avoid such replay attacks to your transfers. The Blockchain Bandit: Finding Over 700 Active Private Keys On Ethereum's Blockchain

06:06
While researching key generation on Ethereum's blockchain we discovered funds from weak private key addresses are being pilfered by someone. On 01/13/18, this blockchain bandit held a balance of 37,926 ETH valued at $54 million. Read the research paper here: https://www.securityevaluators.com/casestudies/ethercombing/ Blockchain Security Blogs: https://blog.securityevaluators.com/blogchain/home Follow us at: https://twitter.com/ISEsecurity Ethercombing: Finding Secrets in Popular Places: In our research we examine how, even when faced with this statistical improbability, ISE discovered 732 private keys as well as their corresponding public keys that committed 49,060 transactions to the Ethereum blockchain. Additionally, we identified 13,319 Ethereum that was transferred to either invalid destination addresses, or wallets derived from weak keys that at the height of the Ethereum market had a combined total value of $18,899,969. In the process, we discovered that funds from these weak-key addresses are being pilfered and sent to a destination address belonging to an individual or group that is running active campaigns to compromise/gather private keys and obtain these funds. On January 13, 2018, this “blockchainbandit” held a balance of 37,926 ETH valued at $54,343,407. How To Create An Ethereum Account

05:34
How To Create An Ethereum Account http://www.Blockgeeks.com Today, we'll be learning about Ethereum accounts and the math behind creating one. To interact with Ethereum in any meaningful way, you need to have a user account. The simplest way to create an account on Ethereum is by using the Mist e-theorem wallet, which is an application that allows you to manage and interact with multiple Ethereum accounts. Launching the application will sync to the black chain, meaning it download the entire block chain data to your computer, which can take upwards of 100 gigabytes, so be warned. when you first launch the application, it will walk you through creating an account and setting a password for it. It's very important that you never forget this password to maintain access to the account, there is no forgot your password option. Your new account then shows up in the wallet section of the app and it has a balance of zero. Clicking on the account will give us more details about it and provide some options for putting some real ether into it. The main thing to note is the public address, which you will share with other people. Another way to create an account is via the command line. If you download the Go Ethereum Client of GETH, can simply invoke GETH account new to create an account. This will prompt you to enter a password which again you should never forget and at the end it prints out the public address of your new account. You can create as many accounts as you like and you can view them all by typing GETH Account List. Note that this also shows the account we created in Ethereum Wallet. Another interesting thing to note is that we don't even have to be connected to the block chain or even the internet to create an account. It can happen entirely offline. How is this possible? We know what we need to generate a cryptographic key pair which consists of a public and private key. But don't we have to register this key pair somewhere? What if someone else is already using this key pair? Even though it's technically possible, it is highly, highly, improbable. Let's talk about why. There are three steps involved in generating an Ethereum public address. The first step is to generate a private key which is just a random number represented by 256 bits. The second step is to use elliptic curve cryptography to generate a 512 bit public key. Each private key maps to exactly one public key. The third and final step is to calculate the Keccak256 has of the public key and then keep the right most 160 bits of the Keccak256 hash to get the public address. This is essentially a mapping of 256 bit private keys to 160 bit public addresses. Meaning each account has more than one private key. Security is achieved in the randomness of selecting the private key. As long as you get something sufficiently random and not like one or two, it's highly unlikely that someone else would also generate the same private key. To give you a sense of how many possible private keys there are let's take a look at some numbers. There are 10,000 possible four digit iPhone passcodes. So if someone were to try to break into your phone by guessing each passcode, it would be pretty hard because they would have a one 1 in 10,000 chance of getting it right. But it would be fairly easy for a computer to try 10,000 passcodes pretty quickly. Apple also claims a 1 in 50,000 chance of a fingerprint ID matching a strangers and a 1 in a million chance of a face ID matching making your phone more secure. At a few orders of magnitude larger to we have seven and a half billion humans on the planet and we estimate that the big bang took place some 14 billion years ago. Larger still we estimate around 400 billion different stars just in our own galaxy. Many, many orders of magnitude larger still, we estimate that there are around seven times 10 to the power of 27 atoms in the average adult male weighing 150 pounds. Many orders larger still we estimate that are 1.3 times 10 to the power of 50 atoms in the earth. And even larger still, we come to the total number of possible private keys using 256 bits, one times 10 to the power of 77. This number is so big that if we took all the numbers we just talked about before and added them all up, they still wouldn't even be half of this number. It's unbelievably big. So the chances of someone randomly generating the same private key is sufficiently that it's practically impossible. Staging a brute force attack by trying each possible private key would also require an unachievable amount of computational power, like a planet sized computer working since the beginning of time. To learn more about Ethereum accounts and using wallets, check out our online guides and courses at Blockgeeks.com. Thank for watching and see you next time.

What is Hashing & Digital Signature in The Blockchain?

06:19
What is Hashing & Digital Signature in The Blockchain? https://blockgeeks.com/ Today, we're going to be talking about the word blockchain and breaking it down to understand what does it mean when someone says, "Blockchain." What is hashing? Hashing refers to the concept of taking an arbitrary amount of input data, applying some algorithm to it, and generating a fixed-size output data called the hash. The input can be any number of bits that could represent a single character, an MP3 file, an entire novel, a spreadsheet of your banking history, or even the entire Internet. The point is that the input can be infinitely big. The hashing algorithm [00:01:00] can be chosen depending on your needs and there are many publicly available hashing algorithms. The point is that the algorithm takes the infinite input of bits, applies some calculations to them, and outputs a finite number of bits. For example, 256 bits. What can this hash be used for? A common usage for hashes today is to fingerprint files, also known as check zones. This means that a hash is used to verify that a file has not been [00:01:30] tampered with or modified in any way not intended by the author. If WikiLeaks, for example, publishes a set of files along with their MD5 hashes, whoever downloads those files can verify that they are actually from WikiLeaks by calculating the MD5 hash of the downloaded files, and if the hash doesn't match what was published by WikiLeaks, then you know that the file has been modified in some way. How does the blockchain make use of hashes? [00:02:00] Hashes are used in blockchains to represent the current state of the world. The input is the entire state of the blockchain, meaning all the transactions that have taken place so far and the resulting output hash represents the current state of the blockchain. The hash is used to agree between all parties that the world state is one in the same, but how are these hashes actually calculated? The first hash is calculated for the first block [00:02:30] or the Genesis block using the transactions inside that block. The sequence of initial transactions is used to calculate a block hash for the Genesis block. For every new block that is generated afterwords, the previous block's hash is also used, as well as its own transactions, as input to determine its block hash. This is how a chain of blocks is formed, each new block hash pointing to the block hash that came before it. This system of hashing guarantees that no transaction in the history can be tampered with because if any single part of the transaction changes, so does the hash of the block to which it belongs, and any following blocks' hashes as a result. It would be fairly easy to catch any tampering as a result because you can just compare the hashes. This is cool because everyone on the blockchain only needs to agree on 256 bits to represent the potentially infinite state of the blockchain. The Ethereum blockchain is currently tens of gigabytes, but the current state of the blockchain, as of this recording, is this hexadecimal hash representing 256 bits. What about digital signatures? Digital signatures, like real signatures, are a way to prove that somebody is who they say they are, except that we use cryptography or math, which is more secure than handwritten signatures that can be [00:04:00] easily forged. A digital signature is a way to prove that a message originates from a specific person and no one else, like a hacker. Digital signatures are used today all over the Internet. Whenever you visit a website over ACTPS, you are using SSL, which uses digital signatures to establish trust between you and the server. This means that when you visit Facebook.com, your browser can check the digital signature that came with the web page to verify that it indeed originated from Facebook and not some hacker. In asymmetric encryption systems, users generate something called a key pair, which is a public key and a private key using some known algorithm. The public key and private key are associated with each other through some mathematical relationship. The public key is meant to be distributed publicly to serve as an address to receive messages from other users, like an IP address or home address. The private key is meant to be kept secret and is used to digitally sign messages sent to other users. The signature is included with the message so that the recipient can verify using the sender's public key. This way, the recipient can be sure that only the sender could have sent this message. Generating a key pair is analogous to creating an account on the blockchain, but without having to actually register anywhere. Pretty cool. Also, every transaction that is executed on the blockchain is digitally signed by the sender using their private key. This signature ensures that only the owner of the account can move money out of the account.

MyEtherWallet Tutorial: How to Set it up and Use it

04:02
MyEtherWallet Tutorial: How to Set it up and Use it A detailed video on how to set up Myetherwallet step by step and safely secure it. A tutorial or a guide to step by step set up myetherwallet. MyEtherWallet is an Interface When you create an account on MyEtherWallet you are generating a cryptographic set of numbers: your private key and your public key (address). The handling of your keys happens entirely on your computer, inside your browser. We never transmit, receive or store your private key, password, or other account information. We do not charge a transaction fee. You are simply using our interface to interact directly with the blockchain. If you send your public key (address) to someone, they can send you ETH or tokens. 👍 If you send your private key to someone, they now have full control of your account. 👎

Public Key Vs. Private Key - Their roles are and how they differ from each oth

15:46
Source: https://www.spreaker.com/user/evolutionarycapitalists/wtf-is-cryptospace-public-key-vs-private Thank you for listening! In this episode of WTF is CryptoSpace, Chad and Brett discuss the Public Key Vs. Private Key to determine their roles are and how they differ from each other to support a transaction in the CryptoSpace. If you are a member of the CryptoSpace community, interested in Blockchain technology (you are not alone) or just curious about Cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and Bitcoin then join us for your regular chat here at WTF is CryptoSpace. What is a Public Key? This is a cryptographic key that can be obtained and used by anyone to encrypt messages intended for a particular recipient, such that the encrypted messages can be deciphered only by using a second key that is known only to the recipient (the private key ). What is a Private Key? The Private Key is the longer of the two, and is used to generate a signature for each blockchain transaction a user sends out. This signature is used to confirm that the transaction has come from the user, and also prevents the transaction from being altered by anyone once it has been issued. In short, you sign the cryptocurrencies you send to others using a Private Key. If someone were to obtain your private key, they would be able to send your cryptocurrencies to themselves, verifying that transaction with the Private Key — in effect stealing from you! The Private Key is used to mathematically derive the Public Key, which (along with information about the network and a checksum) is then transformed with a hash function to produce the address that other people can see. You receive cryptocurrencies that others send to your address (which is a result of the hash of your public key and some additional information). Follow us to join the conversation...
