Environmental Econ: Crash Course Economics #22

08:23
So, if economics is about choices and how we use our resources, econ probably has a lot to say about the environment, right? Right! In simple terms, pollution is just a market failure. The market is producing more pollution than society wants. This week, Adriene and Jacob focus on the environment, and how economics can be used to control and reduce pollution and emissions. You'll learn about supply and demand, incentives, and how government intervention influences the environment. Crash Course is on Patreon! Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources - YES

01:09
Environmental conservation and natural resources depend on protecting our planet. http://YourEarthSafe.com Sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing at all! At YES that's exactly what we do: we protect parcels of virgin wilderness by purchasing them on the free market and placing them in an independently managed international land trust safe from human exploitation. YES is a tool that allows you to become the beneficiary of virgin wilderness (generically referred to as "Land Unit") to help preserve them in their natural state thus allowing you to collaborate in the conservation of the planet. However small it might be, all contributions to environmental protection are always helpful. By joining YES you as an individual are contributing in a very real way to maintaining the global ecosystem, protecting the globall community and letting nature take its course.

What is ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE? What does ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE mean?

02:57
What is ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE? What does ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE mean? ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE meaning - ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE definition - ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Environmental governance is a concept in political ecology and environmental policy that advocates sustainability (sustainable development) as the supreme consideration for managing all human activities—political, social and economic. Governance includes government, business and civil society, and emphasizes whole system management. To capture this diverse range of elements, environmental governance often employs alternative systems of governance, for example watershed-based management. It views natural resources and the environment as global public goods, belonging to the category of goods that are not diminished when they are shared. This means that everyone benefits from for example, a breathable atmosphere, stable climate and stable biodiversity. Public goods are non-rivalrous—a natural resource enjoyed by one person can still be enjoyed by others—and non-excludable—it is impossible to prevent someone consuming the good (breathing). Nevertheless, public goods are recognized as beneficial and therefore have value. The notion of a global public good thus emerges, with a slight distinction: it covers necessities that must not be destroyed by one person or state. The non-rivalrous character of such goods calls for a management approach that restricts public and private actors from damaging them. One approach is to attribute an economic value to the resource. Water is possibly the best example of this type of good. As of 2013 environmental governance is far from meeting these imperatives. “Despite a great awareness of environmental questions from developed and developing countries, there is environmental degradation and the appearance of new environmental problems. This situation is caused by the parlous state of global environmental governance, wherein current global environmental governance is unable to address environmental issues due to many factors. These include fragmented governance within the United Nations, lack of involvement from financial institutions, proliferation of environmental agreements often in conflict with trade measures; all these various problems disturb the proper functioning of global environmental governance. Moreover, divisions among northern countries and the persistent gap between developed and developing countries also have to be taken into account to comprehend the institutional failures of the current global environmental governance."

021 - Environmental Economics In this video Paul Andersen explains how economic models, like supply and demand, can be applied to environmental systems. The market forces will not protect environmental services until proper valuation and externalities are established. The wealth of a nation can be more accurately measured through the sustainability of the economic model. Do you speak another language? Natural resource management is one of today’s most serious challenges. Each year humans extract 100 billion tons of mineral resources and elements. For the last half of a century the resource consumption increased 25 times and the amount of wastes – 100 times. International experts agreed that rapid development of science and technical progress improve human life but destroys the environment. The fertility and productivity of our planet is not endless which threatens next generations to face with lack of natural resources. The way out seen by scientists is saving policies and usage of alternative energy sources.

How do buildings affect the environment

02:10
This video was created for use on the UK's Multi Comfort website - https://multicomfort.saint-gobain.co.uk/ Transcript of video Buildings have a big impact on the environment. The construction and renovation of buildings uses precious natural resources Then, when in use, buildings are responsible for a significant proportion of all our carbon emissions. Energy used in the construction and use of our homes and other buildings accounts for around half of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions Under the Climate Change Act 2008 we have a legally binding target to reduce these emissions by at least 80% by 2050 Globally it is a similar picture. Buildings account for around 35% of resources, 40% of energy use, consume 12% of the world’s drinkable water and produce almost 40% of global carbon emissions So what can we do? Producers of building materials like us, can ensure this is done in ways so as not to adversely affect the environment. We believe we have performed one of the largest number of Life Cycle Analysis in the UK, on our product range. These Environmental Product Declarations or EPDs, show how our products have been made in a sustainable way, minimising energy usage and helping to protect the environment In addition, many of the products and solutions we produce then go on to help minimise energy use in the buildings that have been built or renovated Poorly designed and constructed buildings use more energy, increasing the demand on energy production and contributing to global warming. Reducing energy use in buildings is one of the most important ways to reduce humans’ overall environmental impact.

Beyond the Science: Environmental Problems…Cultural Solutions | Paul K. Doss | TEDxEvansville

13:25
Science is the endeavor that allows us to describe our natural world and how it works. Science gives us the power and knowledge to understand our environment, recognize problems, and quantify threats. But science doesn’t tell us how to use that knowledge. Our planet’s most pressing environmental problems won’t be solved by science. Preserving water resources, facing the immediate and measurable threats from global climate change, reducing waste generation, and solving the myriad environmental challenges facing humans can only be achieved by cultural change. A society represents a collection of individual behaviors…every one of us is responsible for behavioral change. But do we have the personal and political wherewithal to make those changes before we must manage crises? Paul K. Doss is Professor of Geology at the University of Southern Indiana, where he teaches courses on environmental geology, environmental science, geology of national parks, and water resources. Doss directs student research on environmental problems, such as impacts of humans on water resources, natural resources management and geological hazards. He has previously held positions with Yellowstone National Park, Indiana Dunes and Everglades National Park. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

A World Without Water (Global Warming Documentary)

01:14:04
This film investigates the future of the world's water, and paints a disturbing picture of a world running out of the most basic of life's essentials. 8 year old Vanessa and her parents have to walk almost a mile down the cliffs of El Alto in Bolivia to collect water from an unreliable well every day. Yet, they live just a few hundred metres from their city's main water treatment plant and can see millions of gallons just beyond the barbed wire fence. They are victims of waters increasing commodification. The struggle for this precious resource and the battle for its ownership is explored through compelling stories of families living in Bolivia, Detroit, Dar Es Salaam and Rajestan. As the background to these stories we explore the conflicts over the future of water and see how even those living in the relatively water-rich UK hold the survival of the planet in our hands. Water Resources

11:38
005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? Environment -- protecting our habitat and resources

06:22
From meeting the food needs of a growing population to reducing carbon emissions resulting from transportation, environmental challenges are faced at both a global and local level and require a holistic approach to research. Interdisciplinary teams here at the University of Sheffield are working innovatively to develop new models, technology and systems to help companies reduce their environmental footprint as well as understand the public's level of acceptance of these new practices. Areas of research expertise explored in this film include the sustainable design of buildings, the 'greening' of the supply chain and the development of electric vehicles.

The questions Annika works with are related to how we can get people to travel in a more eco-friendly manner or how we can get people to accept different necessary policies directed towards dampening the effects of environmentally harming behavior. The common denominator for all these questions is the investigation of how attitudinal factors, personal resources, contextual factors, and habits/routines affects related thoughts, intentions and behaviors. Annika Nordlund is associate professor in psychology. Director of Research, Transportation Research Unit (TRUM), Umeå University. She is interested in the human dimension of the environmental problems in the world. Her research interest is broadly found within the areas of environmental and social psychology and more specifically within the influence of psychological factors in different types of environmentally relevant behavior. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

This session will present findings of WRAP's Product Research Forum survey of existing guidance for grocery and home improvement (HI) products. A review was conducted on programmes producing quantification-related product guidance, including: Type III EPD schemes, PCF schemes, water and multi-criteria footprinting schemes, Type I eco-labelling schemes, and various sector initiatives. Areas of proliferation, duplication and key gaps in guidance were identified and will be discussed. The Forum's focus is on grocery and HI products, with priority product groups determined based on sales and impact potential. However, a library of product guidance documents for all HI / grocery products has been developed. Presentation held at the 7th PCF World Summit "From Environmental Footprinting to Implementation: Renewable Energy in the Value Chain" on 17-18 April 2012 in Berlin. Check out our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/teded View full lesson: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/can-100-renewable-energy-power-the-world-federico-rosei-and-renzo-rosei Every year, the world uses 35 billion barrels of oil. This massive scale of fossil fuel dependence pollutes the earth, and it won’t last forever. On the other hand, we have abundant sun, water and wind, which are all renewable energy sources. So why don’t we exchange our fossil fuel dependence for an existence based only on renewables? Federico Rosei and Renzo Rosei describe the challenges.
