Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson

11:07
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.

Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

I love them!) ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ABOUT THIS VIDEO In this video, I talk about the 4 things you need to do to improve your writing skills in English: 1. Ask questions 2. Research 3. Practice 4. Get feedback. First, each type of writing requires different structures and techniques. An email, for example, is not written the same way as a resume. In addition, formal writing is a lot different than informal writing. Once you know what you are writing, you can begin researching. You will need to find information and tips on HOW to write whatever it is that you are writing, but you will also need to find examples to analyze and follow. It's important that these are GOOD examples. Be careful while doing your research and make sure you are using reliable sources. There is a lot of bad information on the internet. Next, you need to practice. You can't improve a skill if you don't work at improving it every day. Study and research are just one part of improving your writing. But to really improve, you need to sit down and write. You need to implement the things you learn and imitate other writing that you have already analyzed. Then you need feedback. You need to ask someone who knows MORE than you about the type of writing you are trying to do. You can't just ask a friend or coworker, as their opinion may be biased or uninformed. This might mean that you will need to hire an editor or tutor (especially if you are preparing for a writing exam.) If you are applying for an important position, for example, it would be a good idea to hire a professional resume writer to help you create an outstanding resume. Job markets are often VERY competitive, so the investment is usually worth it. Anyhow, that's it! That is how you improve your English writing skills, regardless of what type of writing you are doing. With all this said, bear in mind that writers study writing, not English. English teachers may be able to help you with the basics of good writing, but if you want to learn how to run a blog in English (for example) you should get advice from other bloggers. This means that ESL teachers aren't the best resource for people who are looking to improve their writing (unless you're preparing for an English exam and working with a teacher who can prepare you for it). But to improve your overall writing skills, learning from English teachers who teach English speakers would be better, and learning from writers with experience would be best. Another note... grammar is important, but good grammar does not always equal good writing. Writing involves a lot more than grammar. It also involves structure, word choice, rhythm, sentence patterns, transition phrases etc. These are all things you should research. From Beginner To Intermediate: How To Improve Your English- 3 Ideas

47:53
How to go from Beginner to Intermediate Level! Learn how to improve your English with my top 3 ideas to help in this process. In this video, I am going to show the best way to improve your English level and become a confident speaker in English from beginner to intermediate level. Learn these 3 ideas! Here is a quick summary of the video and the instructions for the exercise you can send to me by email ([email protected]) or to my facebook page (use the messenger to do it) it is really important that you really know what your level is. Many people say they are beginners, but they are not beginners. Many people say they are intermediate speakers, but they are not. How do you define your level? In my opinion, it is a combination of skills that will define your level. Your writing skills Your listening skills - Your speaking skills Your reading skills These are the 4 skills that together will define your level. Some students will think, well I just need to speak, that’s all I want. But you know, that’s not how it works. Together, these 4 skills will help you have the speaking level you are looking for. My tip number 1 is: Dedicate time to study the 4 skills: Writing, listening, speaking and reading. You can not improve speaking if you don’t work on your other skills. By writing, listening and reading, you will be preparing yourself to improve your speaking. Now, be strategic when you do that, choose subjects that are connected. Turn all these skills into 1, so that they can help you with the speaking. To help you, here is an exercise you should do for 7 (SEVEN) days, ok? Read articles (texts) about cell phones Listen audio/video materials about cell phones Write about cell phones THEN, after 7 days you will record a 2-minute-answer (ONLY 2 minutes, please) and send to my email or facebook. During these 2 minutes, you will talk about: THE IMPORTANCE OF CELL PHONES Why am I asking you this? To show you that when you do the right exercise you can talk about anything. You can do this kind of exercise with different subjects. You can talk about vacation. You can talk about traveling. You can talk about food. There are many different subjects you can search. Tip number 2: Educational videos are great, but how about different kinds of videos? Many students who are studying English only watch English teaching videos or TV series. But there is so much more you can explore. For example: If you like technology, watch videos about technology. If you like traveling – watch videos from vloggers about traveling, about their experience. If you like reading about motivational things – watch about those things. Why? Because it is more difficult to do so. In these videos, they are not trying to teach you English, they are just talking. They have no public speaking techniques (most of the times), like actors and actresses do. They just turn on the camera and start talking. Tip number 3: I’m preparing a video to talk more about this, but I will briefly talk about it here, because I feel it is important to do so. Grammar! You need grammar. But there is a misinterpretation when it comes to studying grammar. I’m not asking you to buy a grammar a book and study it every day one hour every day. No! that’s now that’s not what I am talking about. But if you just ignore grammar, when you become an intermediate speaker if you will have many problems to build your sentences, to express yourself, your communication skills will be very limited. You need to find useful contexts so that you can include grammar. Writing is a good way to do that. When you write you consequently, you need grammar. So, maybe you want to talk more about your favorite tv show. Start writing about it, as you write, you will understand what grammar points you need, what words you need. That’s when you stop writing, read a little grammar, watch some videos to get some ideas and explanations and then go back to your exercise. That’s how you do it. You have a purpose. You are writing something specific that will require grammar, so you prepare yourself. People who say that you don’t need grammar are mistaken. At some point if your never studied grammar, you will get stuck, so don’t run from it, embrace it, but do it strategically. Studying a grammar book without a purpose in mind is pointless. Dannyyel's question NO X Not Use not with auxiliary verbs: I do NOT like sports, Iwill NOT travell Verb to be: She is NOT nice don't use "NO" before a verb: I no like you! (NO) that's incorrect, ok? You can use "No" before a noun without an "article". The idea here is a bit different. You are saying that there is NONE, zero, "ANY". It is a bit different from negation. For example: I have no time (none, zero, I don't have ANY time) there are no students! (there aren't ANY students)
