How to Beat Wall Street: Golden Rules for Financial Planning and Investment (2009)

01:02:30
In finance, investment is the purchase of an asset or item with the hope that it will generate income or appreciate in the future and be sold at the higher price. It generally does not include deposits with a bank or similar institution. The term investment is usually used when referring to a long-term outlook. This is the opposite of trading or speculation, which are short-term practices involving a much higher degree of risk. Financial assets take many forms and can range from the ultra safe low return government bonds to much higher risk higher reward international stocks. A good investment strategy will diversify the portfolio according to the specified needs. The most famous and successful investor of all time is Warren Buffett. In March 2013 Forbes magazine had Warren Buffett ranked as number 2 in their Forbes 400 list.[3] Buffett has advised in numerous articles and interviews that a good investment strategy is long term and choosing the right assets to invest in requires due diligence. Edward O. Thorp was a very successful hedge fund manager in the 1970s and 1980s that spoke of a similar approach.[4] Another thing they both have in common is a similar approach to managing investment money. No matter how successful the fundamental pick is, without a proper money management strategy, full potential of the asset can't be reached. Both investors have been shown to use principles from the Kelly criterion for money management.[5] Numerous interactive calculators which use the kelly criterion can be found online.[6] In contrast, dollar (or pound etc.) cost averaging and market timing are phrases often used in marketing of collective investments and can be said to be associated with speculation. Investments are often made indirectly through intermediaries, such as pension funds, banks, brokers, and insurance companies. These institutions may pool money received from a large number of individuals into funds such as investment trusts, unit trusts, SICAVs etc. to make large scale investments. Each individual investor then has an indirect or direct claim on the assets purchased, subject to charges levied by the intermediary, which may be large and varied. It generally, does not include deposits with a bank or similar institution. Investment usually involves diversification of assets in order to avoid unnecessary and unproductive risk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investing Diversification refers to the number of different securities in a fund. A fund with more securities is said to be better diversified than a fund with smaller number of securities. Owning many securities reduces volatility by decreasing the impact of large price swings above or below the average return in a single security. A Wilshire 5000 index would be considered diversified, but a bio-tech ETF would not.[17] Since some indices, such as the S&P 500 and FTSE 100, are dominated by large company stocks, an index fund may have a high percentage of the fund concentrated in a few large companies. This position represents a reduction of diversity and can lead to increased volatility and investment risk for an investor who seeks a diversified fund. Some advocate adopting a strategy of investing in every security in the world in proportion to its market capitalization, generally by investing in a collection of ETFs in proportion to their home country market capitalization.[18] A global indexing strategy may outperform one based only on home market indexes because there may be less correlation between the returns of companies operating in different markets than between companies operating in the same market. Asset allocation is the process of determining the mix of stocks, bonds and other classes of investable assets to match the investor's risk capacity, which includes attitude towards risk, net income, net worth, knowledge about investing concepts, and time horizon. Index funds capture asset classes in a low cost and tax efficient manner and are used to design balanced portfolios. A combination of various index mutual funds or ETFs could be used to implement a full range of investment policies from low risk to high risk. In the United States, mutual funds price their assets by their current value every business day, usually at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time, when the New York Stock Exchange closes for the day.[19] Index ETFs, in contrast, are priced during normal trading hours, usually 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. Index ETFs are also sometimes weighted by revenue rather than market capitalization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_funds

Index Competition Good for ETF Investors: Russell Exec

05:18
ETF Trends Editor, Tom Lydon, speaks with Ken O'Keeffe, Managing Director of Investable Products at Russell Indexes. O'Keeffe talks about the impact and opportunities for the indexing business in the wake of Vanguard's recent decision to transition away from MSCI to benchmarks managed by FTSE and CRSP. "It's like deja vu all over again," the Russell executive says, noting this isn't the first time index fund and ETF giant Vanguard has announced a major index switch. It just means index providers have to continue to innovate, he explains. "It's not that the index business is getting more competitive — it's always been competitive," O'Keeffe said. "The competition is really good for the ETF provider, the financial advisor and the end investor."

Episode 155 - 'Monkeys' beat market cap indices

05:27
In this week's episode of Cass Talks, Dr Nick Motson discusses recent findings from research into equity indices. He, alongside co-researcher Andrew Clare, found that equity indices constructed randomly by 'monkeys' would have produced higher risk-adjusted returns than an equivalent market capitalisation-weighted index over the last 40 years. The finding comes from two papers* published by Cass Business School's Cass Consulting, and sponsored by Aon Hewitt, which investigated alternative methods of constructing equity indices. http://www.cassknowledge.com/research/article/evaluation-alternative-equity-indices-cass-knowledge Cass Talks is Cass Business School's (http://www.cass.city.ac.uk/) weekly audio and video podcast. Wall Street Warriors | Episode 1 Season 3 "Enter the Bears" [HD]

24:34
The first episode of Season 3 (the lost season!) of Wall Street Warriors – a 10-part Docu-Reality Series that was shot on Wall Street during the meltdown that lead to The Great Recession. Episode 1 starts with rumors of an impending crisis... by episode 10 there are near riots outside the New York Stock Exchange. "Enter the Bears" The 3rd season opener gives a behind-the-scenes look at the New York and Chicago financial districts just as the credit crunch begins to unfold. Fearing a deep recession, sibling stock brokers, Phil & Ken, argue over how best to protect their client's money. Doug, a floor trader on Chicago's famous outcry pits, shows what it takes to be a survivor in the cut-throat environment. Meanwhile, Kristi, CEO of a new online trading firm, Think or Swim, stresses out trying to meet a major filing deadline while Rich, the Hedge Fund guy, tries to profit from the growing oil bubble. Episode 2 "The Fear Gauge" is available here: https://youtu.be/A3Mhtb1c55o Wall Street Warriors S3 Ep1: Coming up next on Wall Street Warriors. PHIL: Today's the start of the official bear market. RICH: Stress levels are off the charts. DOUG: The American economy is so weak right now. KEN: We're down 13. PHIL: You're [bleep]ing killing me here. KRISTI: The tension is visible. Just keep me updated. Good-bye! Grrr! [laughs] THE FLOOR TRADER THE MARKET MAKER THE COMPANY THE OPTIONS TRADER THE MONEY THE BROKERS WALL STREET WARRIORS: ENTER THE BEARS MARKETS ARE FALLING THE CREDIT CRUNCH CONTINUES HOUSING PRICES ARE PLUMMETING OIL PRICES HAVE SOARED TALK OF CRISIS HOVERS OVER WALL STREET… CHICAGO WORLDWIDE CAPITAL OF DERIVATIVES S&P 500 INDEX OPTIONS PIT CHICAGO BOARD OPTIONS EXCHANGE DOUG: This is like the Wild, Wild West of trading. There's more money than I've ever seen. DOUG: A broker comes into the crowd with a 10,000-lot order, and the premium on the order is huge, crazy money. Billions and billions of dollars are traded on a daily basis out here. It’s Capitalism to the extreme. A lot of people make a lot of good money down here, but you pay the price, too. DOUG: Right now, we're in a little tricky area. The American public wants a rally, but any kind of move to the downside gets people panic. I think we could start having a problem in the market. DOUG:I think the credit crisis is huge right now because when the U.S. economy gets bad, people run and they buy oil. They buy gold. TRADER #2: There's a confidence that, uh, has eroded. TRADER #3: There's a lot of money on the sidelines. DOUG: The dollar's getting pounded because the American economy is so weak right now. There's a problem. I mean, there's-- there's a problem that has to be solved. Something's gotta be fixed. NEW YORK FINANCIAL DISTRICT KEN & PHILIP BRISARD STOCK BROKERS PHIL: We can probably raise a cool $3 million out of that seminar. Now, you had a ACAP come in last week. Did it settle? KEN: Yeah. Well, it settled for about 620,000. KEN: Today is definitely gonna mark a historic day because we are officially in a bear market. PHIL: Front page of The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and all these other financial newspapers are calling this the "Great Depression." KEN: We currently have oil, natural gas. The dollar's at a 52-week low. And those three components of the economy are hurting us really bad. Right now you need to keep everyone calm, collected, and tell them about the options strategy. Don't get into the panic mode, 'cause everyone panics when everything's going wrong. You know, no one can see the light of day. And this is what tells me there's opportunity all over the place. Brisard & Brisard. I'm a financial advisor. I've been doing this 14 1/2 years along with my partner, which is also my brother Ken. We deal with stocks, bonds, and options. Some people say don't do business with your family, but I don't know who else I could do business and trust. The writing's on the wall. All you have to do is go the opposite way. But every single day, myself and my brother, we reach a point of, uh, disagreement. You're a genius on that. And you know what? No, you called me an idiot. I called you an idiot on it because you know what? I actually booked some of my clients out of the SKF right around $120 'cause the market... Phil likes to do things his way. HEDGE FUND MANAGER RICH TAG: I watched the past three months oil go from 80 to 130. But it's gonna turn, right? I mean, in the U.S., prices are high enough. In London, they're picketing, and they're burning gas stations down, right? Wall Street is feast or famine. We just came out of five years of hyper growth, and boom, we got hit with the sub-prime crisis, and Wall Street started to pare back and lay off. Stress levels are off the charts. There's a lot of hysteria in the markets now. Many of the energy hedge funds are flat or minus for the year. Hedge funds are now managing a significant share, probably 50% of America's investable assets.

Hedge fund

01:06:15
A hedge fund is a pooled investment vehicle administered by a professional management firm, and often structured as a limited partnership, limited liability company, or similar vehicle. Hedge funds are generally distinct from mutual funds as their use of leverage is not capped by regulators and from private equity funds as the majority of hedge funds invest in relatively liquid assets. Hedge funds invest in a diverse range of markets and use a wide variety of investment styles and financial instruments. The name "hedge fund" refers to the hedging techniques traditionally used by hedge funds, but hedge funds today do not necessarily hedge. Hedge funds are made available only to certain sophisticated or accredited investors and cannot be offered or sold to the general public. As such, they generally avoid direct regulatory oversight, bypass licensing requirements applicable to investment companies, and operate with greater flexibility than mutual funds and other investment funds. Hedge funds have existed for many decades, but have become increasingly popular in recent years, growing to be one of the world's major investment vehicles and sources of capital. Hedge funds are most often open-ended and allow additions or withdrawals by their investors (generally on a monthly or quarterly basis). A hedge fund's value is calculated as a share of the fund's net asset value, meaning that increases and decreases in the value of the fund's investment assets (and fund expenses) are directly reflected in the amount an investor can later withdraw. The firm generated $130 billion of ETF inflows in 2015, besting rival Vanguard Group Inc., which managed ETF inflows of $76 billion. The iShares ETFs captured a dominating 42% of total ETF inflows in both the United States and European markets during the year, and ended 2015 with nearly $1.1 trillion in worldwide assets under management (AUM). Among the many popular and fast-growing ETFs in the iShares lineup, three of the unit's top funds have generated growth that few other ETFs in the market can match. Measured over a 14-month period from January 2015 through February 2016, the following three funds are responsible for combined asset inflows of roughly $22 billion. 1. iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF The iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (NYSEARCA: AGG) is the fastest-growing ETF in the iShares family, with about $9.6 billion in asset inflows in the 14 months ending February 2016. The fund provides low-cost exposure to the U.S. investment-grade bond market. It was launched in September 2003 and has grown into the eighth-largest ETF in the world, with $34.4 billion in AUM, as of March 24, 2016. It carries a low expense ratio of 0.08%. The fund tracks the Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, which includes more than 9,000 bonds, including U.S. treasuries and other government bonds, corporate bonds, commercial mortgage-backed securities, mortgage-backed pass-through securities and other asset-backed securities publicly available in the U.S. market. The ETF employs a representative sampling strategy, investing in a subset of securities to approximate the investment profile of the benchmark index. The fund has nearly 5,400 component securities, including allocations of 38.1% to U.S. treasuries and 27.9% to mortgage-backed pass-through securities. 2. iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF The iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF (NYSEARCA: IEFA) delivers broad-based exposure to equities in developed markets around the world, not including the United States or Canada. The fund is relatively new, having launched in October 2012, but it has grown quickly, attracting roughly $6.3 billion in assets in the 14-month period ending February 2016. It is the 52nd-largest ETF in the world with nearly $10.4 billion in AUM, as of March 24, 2016. It is a low-cost international equities ETF, charging an annual expense ratio of just 0.12%. The fund tracks the MSCI EAFE Investable Market Index, a benchmark covering small-, mid- and large-cap equities in 21 developed-market economies in Europe and the Asia Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand. The index includes more than 3,100 equities, accounting for roughly 99% of the free-float-adjusted market capitalization in the coverage are

What is CORE & SATELLITE? What does CORE & SATELLITE mean? CORE & SATELLITE meaning & explanation

What is CORE & SATELLITE? What does CORE & SATELLITE mean? CORE & SATELLITE meaning - CORE & SATELLITE definition - CORE & SATELLITE explanation. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Core & Satellite Portfolio Management is an investment strategy that incorporates traditional fixed-income and equity-based securities (i.e. index funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), passive mutual funds, etc.) known as the "core" portion of the portfolio, with a percentage of selected individual securities in the fixed-income and equity-based side of the portfolio known as the "satellite" portion. The "Core" is made of passively managed securities (e.g. index funds, ETFs, passive mutual funds, individual securities) and uses a traditional benchmark (e.g. Russell 3000 or the S&P 1500) to benchmark/compare for performance. The positions may have a particular style bias (e.g. more small cap stocks over mid/large cap companies, more value positions over growth positions, higher or lower concentration in developed international markets) and is sometimes consistent with the MONECO Seven Asset Allocation Management Theme. The market downturn of 2008 has many experts in the investments industry questioning the validity of asset allocation as a means for diversifying and managing overall risks associated with investing in stocks. As a consequence, other alternatives are now gaining force. Owning a core equity portfolio centered on a theme of dividend growth continues to gain momentum as individuals are faced with a growing likelihood of outliving their investable assets. With a core centered on dividend growth, individuals create a growing income stream irrespective of the account value associated with growth in the underlying assets. The "Satellite" portion, by contrast, comprises holdings that the advisor expects will add alpha, the financial term for returns exceeding systemic. Holdings may include actively managed stocks, mutual funds, and separate account managers with a particular sector, region of positions, or Micro or Mega Cap Company Holdings, or passively managed assets with a particular style that is counter to, or even enhances, the style bias of the core. Short holding periods and tax-inefficient positions may result in short-term capital gains or losses. If the entire allotment of the satellite portion is not deemed worthy of inclusion, that portion will either be reallocated across "core" positions or in a "satellite holder"—a position that mirrors some aspect of the core (generally the position most closely resembling the benchmark) that is quickly traded when an opportunity is identified without causing major tax implications (e.g., issues with FIFO based trades). This satellite allocation may be implemented into 100% equity allocations and/or allocations that blend with fixed-income or non-equity positions. The satellite portfolio may be used occasionally for fixed-income investing (emerging market debt, junk bonds, individual bonds) but generally it is dedicated to: equities and alternative assets such as: hedge funds, REITs, commodities, options, and foreign currencies. Principal protected notes may also be used; these investments are truly hybrid in that they provide a guaranteed return of principal while providing upside participation in a number of equity and alternative-investments asset classes. Portfolios are more than a collection of financial assets and the satellite investments must be selected and managed considering the portfolio as a whole. The satellite should improve not only the return but the risk/return profile of the portfolio, and not only quantitatively (the Sharpe ratio or whatever other risk/return measures used) but also qualitatively, by adding sources of value (e.g. non-correlated strategies, short and medium-term investment ideas, risk-asymmetric assets, etc.) different from that in the core but still consistent with the market and economic view and the client's financial planning goals. ...

Retirement Planning and Mastering the Market Cycle

01:14:01
Hello 2019! This is year number eight of Jill on Money. Boy oh boy does time fly when you’re having fun. We begin this week just like we do every other week…by answering your questions. We’re kicking off the first episode of the year with two very different retirement planning questions from Lee in Germany and Mitch in California. It’s always a treat when we have a real Wall Street legend in the studio, and that’s the case in hour two as we chat with Howard Marks, author of Mastering the Market Cycle: Getting the Odds on Your Side. As co-chairman and co-founder of Oaktree Capital Management, Howard Marks oversees a leading investment firm responsible for over $120 billion in assets. We all know markets rise and fall, but when should you pull out, and when should you stay in? The answer is never black or white, but is best reached through a keen understanding of the reasons behind the rhythm of cycles. Confidence about where we are in a cycle comes when you learn the patterns of ups and downs that influence not just economics, markets and companies, but also human psychology and the investing behaviors that result. If you study past cycles, understand their origins and remain alert for the next one, you will become keenly attuned to the investment environment as it changes. By following Marks’s insights, which are drawn from his memorable memos to clients, you might find yourself recognizing these recurring patterns to help with your own financial gain and psychological benefit. Have a money question? Go to jillonmoney.com for all the contact info. We love feedback so please subscribe and leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts! Classification of Mutual Funds in India

03:05
Mutual funds allow investors to pool in their money for a diversified selection of securities, managed by a professional fund manager. The Mutual Funds usually invest their funds in equities, bonds, debentures, call money etc., depending on the objectives and terms of scheme floated by MF. Now a days there are MF which even invest in gold or other asset classes. Some important mutual fund schemes under the following three categories based on maturity period of investment: I. Open-Ended - This scheme allows investors to buy or sell units at any point in time. This does not have a fixed maturity date. 1. Debt/ Income - In a debt/income scheme, a major part of the investable fund are channelized towards debentures, government securities, and other debt instruments. Although capital appreciation is low (compared to the equity mutual funds), this is a relatively low risk-low return investment avenue which is ideal for investors seeing a steady income. 2. Money Market/ Liquid - This is ideal for investors looking to utilize their surplus funds in short term instruments while awaiting better options. These schemes invest in short-term debt instruments and seek to provide reasonable returns for the investors. 3. Equity/ Growth - Equities are a popular mutual fund category amongst retail investors. Although it could be a high-risk investment in the short term, investors can expect capital appreciation in the long run. If you are at your prime earning stage and looking for long-term benefits, growth schemes could be an ideal investment. 3.i. Index Scheme - Index schemes is a widely popular concept in the west. These follow a passive investment strategy where your investments replicate the movements of benchmark indices like Nifty, Sensex, etc. 3.ii. Sectoral Scheme - Sectoral funds are invested in a specific sector like infrastructure, IT, pharmaceuticals, etc. or segments of the capital market like large caps, mid caps, etc. This scheme provides a relatively high risk-high return opportunity within the equity space. 3.iii. Tax Saving - As the name suggests, this scheme offers tax benefits to its investors. The funds are invested in equities thereby offering long-term growth opportunities. Tax saving mutual funds (called Equity Linked Savings Schemes) has a 3-year lock-in period. 4. Balanced - This scheme allows investors to enjoy growth and income at regular intervals. Funds are invested in both equities and fixed income securities; the proportion is pre-determined and disclosed in the scheme related offer document. These are ideal for the cautiously aggressive investors. II. Closed-Ended - In India, this type of scheme has a stipulated maturity period and investors can invest only during the initial launch period known as the NFO (New Fund Offer) period. 1. Capital Protection - The primary objective of this scheme is to safeguard the principal amount while trying to deliver reasonable returns. These invest in high-quality fixed income securities with marginal exposure to equities and mature along with the maturity period of the scheme. 2. Fixed Maturity Plans (FMPs) - FMPs, as the name suggests, are mutual fund schemes with a defined maturity period. These schemes normally comprise of debt instruments which mature in line with the maturity of the scheme, thereby earning through the interest component (also called coupons) of the securities in the portfolio. FMPs are normally passively managed, i.e. there is no active trading of debt instruments in the portfolio. The expenses which are charged to the scheme, are hence, generally lower than actively managed schemes. III. Interval - Operating as a combination of open and closed ended schemes, it allows investors to trade units at pre-defined intervals. A .NAV means Net Asset Value : The investments made by a Mutual Fund are marked to market on daily basis. In other words, we can say that current market value of such investments is calculated on daily basis. NAV is arrived at after deducting all liabilities (except unit capital) of the fund from the realisable value of all assets and dividing by number of units outstanding. Therefore, NAV on a particular day reflects the realisable value that the investor will get for each unit if the scheme is liquidated on that date. This NAV keeps on changing with the changes in the market rates of equity and bond markets. What is the difference between Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds : Hedge Funds are the investment portfolios which are aggressively managed and uses advanced investment strategies, such as leveraged, long, short and derivative positions in both domestic and international markets with a goal of generating high returns . In case of Hedged Funds, the number of investors is usually small and minimum investment required is large. Moreover, they are more risky and generally the investor is not allowed to withdraw funds before a fixed tenure.

And recently, one of the most frequent requests we've had is to bring some balance, as there's been a lot of bearish commentary on the site. Now again, we haven't been out seeking bearish commentary, just more and more people that we've spoken to have been bearish. So we're going to bring back Mark Dow, the founder of Dow Global Advisors. Mark had a great interview back in 2015, at which point he was extremely bullish. And we're also going to bring Tom Lee, the co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors. And we're going to hear from Mark Ritchie II, who's the managing partner at RTM Capital Advisors. But all three of these guys are bullish, constructively so. So we wanted to get a sense from them as to where they think the market stands now and just update this bullish side of the argument. And we'll kick things off with Mark Ritchie II. Mark Ritchie II: So I'm bullish on the US equity markets specifically and the global equity markets. But before I get into that, I want to lay out that just about everything I say has to be framed with the tactical perspective, and a bent towards risk reward. So my background is in trading and everything comes through the lens of risk reward. So right now, I just don't see any real reward to being in 100% cash or being short the equity markets. So if we start from there, then I want to kind of roll back and look at what has the bear argument been for at least 24 months, if not 72 to 128 months or keep going. Has really, in my mind, if you were to put it on the screen, it would be premise one; stocks are overvalued based on some classical metrics, say PE. Premise two would be, when stocks are overvalued based on whatever metric you use, markets either don't go up or go down. Conclusion, therefore, you should be in cash or maybe consider being short. And I think it's a valid argument. The problem is premise 2 is false. There's no reason to believe that when PEs are at a certain level, or CAPEs, or a lot of these traditional metrics are at what people claim are nosebleed levels, that stocks either don't continue to go up or go down. So in my view, I would just say that whole bearish thesis is not convincing to me. Again, if you pair everything in terms of risk reward, I don't think we have as many of the downside risks as a lot of people say. Furthermore, if we back up say 12 to 24 months, and I would ask anyone to envision, OK, if you had a market, any market, that is in a long term uptrend, and then you had a 12 to 18 month consolidation where it corrected 20% to 25% and then broke out in the face of extremely negative pessimism, headlines, and negative sentiment, which way should you go? Should you fade the breakout? Or go with it? And a trader will say, you absolutely buy that breakout and go against the crowd. Well, we're sitting here on about the one-year anniversary of exactly that. I think we had a bear market in 2015. It has been the worst, I guess, advertised or publicized bear market certainly in my career, maybe ever. And the reasons I say that, is everybody likes to use this 20% bogey on the S&P or the Dow, which I think is a really silly definition when we had a more than 25% correction in the average stock-- say I'm speaking of the US broadly, the Russell 2000, the Value Line Geometric.

Wall Street Warriors | Episode 6 Season 3 "Between the Trades" [HD]

22:45
"Between the Trades" is the sixth episode of Season 3 (the lost season!) of Wall Street Warriors – a 10-part Docu-Reality Series that was shot on Wall Street during the meltdown that lead to The Great Recession. Episode 1 starts with rumors of an impending crisis... by episode 10 there are near riots outside the New York Stock Exchange. Episode 6: Phil is confronted by a penny stock-pusher who berates Phil for not buying his stock when it was cheep. Phil's not falling for his sales ploy and turns the tables on him by threatening to short his tiny stock into oblivion. On the trading floor, Doug gives us a lesson in lip reading. A critical skill in the packed futures pit where the noise can be so deafening that you can miss a trade without it. Next, Kristi gives us the story of how she moved from a small Wisconsin town to the big city of Chicago and how she fell in love with Wall Street. Rich, in the Hamptons, sees his chance to get in the oil bubble slipping away and he makes a desperate call to get in on a Canadian oil deal. Later, in the outcry pit, we explore the wacky world of trader jackets. The loud colors aren't about style - they're about standing out in a large crowd, which can translate directly into money. In the end, we follow Phil home to have dinner with his family and we learn something about what makes this warrior of Wall Street tick. DRAMATIS PERSONAE: 1.) THE FLOOR TRADERS: DOUG (SPX Trader) BEN (Volatility Trader) The show captures the visceral thrill of trading hand-to-hand in the open outcry pits in Chicago. We profile how these two working-class guys became the business world’s least-likely tycoons. We follow them as they trade the ups-and-downs of the market with their own money. Colorful characters abound on all sides of these tight-knit but cut-throat environments. However, these masters of the free market may prove vulnerable as computers begin making the open-outcry obsolete. THE ONLINE BROKERAGE HOUSE: KRISTINE (CFO) TONY (options trader) This pioneering and edgy firm is the future of Wall Street. Cutting out the middle man and going right to a growing class of new private traders, Thinkorswim’s CFO, Kristi Ross, fights to keep the start-up growing and running smoothly while nearby Tony Battista trades his own money and shows people how they, too, can make it in the markets. However, when the credit crisis hit all the rules of the game change on them. 3.) THE HEDGE FUNDE: RICHARD The man with the money, Rich Taglianetti is a jet-setter who puts together some of the wealthiest clients on the planet with some of the best undiscovered hedge fund managers. With a knack for finding great Wall Street talent, he's the guy who makes the rich richer. 4.) THE STOCK BROKERS: PHILIP & KEN Philip and his brother, Ken, run their own brokerage firm located right on Wall Street. With great style and attitude, they try to capture high profile celebrity clients and keep them happy by growing their money in these turbulent times. When the markets begin to crash, things don’t go quite as planned.

David Goldman: Will China overtake the U.S. as the world's leading superpower?

01:13:40
Read the transcript: https://bit.ly/2OghJ53 David Goldman: Will China overtake the U.S. as the world's leading superpower? David Goldman is an American economist, music critic, and author, best known for his series of online essays in the Asia Times under the pseudonym Spengler. He is the Wax Family Fellow at the Middle East Forum, a Senior Fellow at the London Center for Policy Research, and a member of the Board of Advisors of Sino-Israel Government Network and Academic Leadership (SIGNAL). According to the Claremont Review of Books, the "Spengler" columns in the Asia Times have attracted readership in the millions. His analyses of global events have become highly regarded. Former C.I.A. National Intelligence Council Vice Chairman Herbert E. Meyer said, "Ask anyone in the intelligence business to name the world's most brilliant intelligence service, and we'll all give the same answer: Spengler. David P. Goldman's 'Spengler' columns provide more insight than the CIA, MI6, and the Mossad combined." Goldman concealed his identity under the "Spengler" pseudonym until 2009, when he revealed his identity in the Asia Times article, "And Spengler is..." and the First Things article "Confessions of a Coward". Goldman regularly appears as a guest on CNBC's Larry Kudlow Program, where he has been an outspoken critic of Federal Reserve efforts to resuscitate the American economy. He is the author of How Civilizations Die: (And Why Islam is Dying Too) and It's Not the End of the World, It's Just the End of You: The Great Extinction of the Nations.
