The Monty Hall Problem
The Monty Hall Problem is a famous (or rather infamous) probability puzzle. Ron Clarke takes you through the puzzle and explains the counter-intuitive answer. Put simply: If you pick a goat then swap you will always win the car. And you have a 2/3 probability of picking a goat. You can read more about this problem, and the controversy, on Marilyn Vos Savant's website www.marilynvossavant.com A lot of people have commented that I should have used 67% rather than 66%. When I made the video I made the choice to use 66% because I talk about "double the chance" and 66% is double 33%. I accept that 67% is more accurate, but I don't think it affects the explanation. Thanks for all your comments!

6 Secret Tips to Always Win At Most Common Games
Game night with your friends or family is always a blast no matter what you’re playing. In case you want to impress your friends and always win at most popular games you need to know success strategies that can guarantee your victory. With these simple but effective strategies, you’ll win at rock, paper, scissors, scrabble, Monopoly, Jenga, dodgeball, and darts. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Rock, paper, scissors 0:43 Scrabble 1:43 Monopoly 3:22 Jenga 4:53 Dodgeball 6:18 Darts 7:34 SUMMARY -Sticking with paper when you're up against a male opponent can help give you the upper hand. Most ladies tend to throw scissors on the first round, so choosing rock can increase your odds at winning when your challenger is a woman. -Fill your vocabulary with more two- and three-letter words. Make the letter “s” your best friend. Also, be sure to analyze the board carefully before making your move. -Don't be too picky at the beginning of the game. The sooner you start buying properties, the better. It's better to buy as many orange and red spaces as possible because they're the most landed-on. -One of the most important things is having no strategy at all! Believe it or not, it's way better to concentrate all your energy on individual moves. -Don't forget that you can always block incoming balls with your own ball. This trick comes in handy when you know you can’t possibly dodge the ball coming your way. When you're the last person left on the court representing your team, or there’s just a ton of attacks coming right at you, kneel down and hold your ball in front of you like a shield. -If you wanna win, you actually need to find out exactly how bad you are. The easiest way to do that is to just throw three darts aiming at 20 and see where they end up. Then, simply measure the distance between each of them and the 20. And here’s where the math comes in. Once you’ve got both measurements, calculate their average by adding them together and dividing the result by two. If you’re accurate within 5mm, you should aim for a treble 20. If your result is within 25mm of accuracy, it's better to aim for a treble 19. And finally, if you've found out that you're accurate only within 60mm, try to stick to a large spot around the center to the lower-left of the bullseye. 12 Signs You Have a Unique Mind
Scientists revealed 12 surprising signs you're much smarter than you think. Find out if you can call yourself a genius for a reason. Exceptionally intelligent people always stand out. It turns out that even the smallest things like your height, weight, or eye color can say a lot about your level of intelligence. Smart people don't need others to have a good time. Psychologists in the UK found out that people who learned to read early on are more intelligent. Norwegian researchers at the University of Oslo have proven that older children are almost always a bit smarter than their younger siblings. Another sign of intelligence and future success can be seen from a very young age: 3-year-olds that are taller than their peers have much higher scores on cognitive tests. People who had some formal music training for at least 9 months boast higher IQ levels than those who were in drama club or didn't do any extracurriculars at all. Intelligent people prefer activities that demand patience and constant mental stimulation to active sports. People with long ring fingers tend to be good at math and spatial thinking but lack verbal skills. Those with a longer index finger are usually better in humanitarian fields like languages and literature. Tons of research has been done on the correlation between eye color and intelligence. People with light-colored eyes are smarter than those with brown or dark-colored eyes. Music: Pina Colada - Silent Partner https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS You prefer being alone 0:41 You learned to read at a very young age 1:35 You're the oldest child in the family 2:11 You're tall 2:56 You took music lessons at some point 3:36 You don't suffer from obesity 4:15 You don't really like physical activity 5:02 You have blue eyes 5:52 You're highly sensitive to noise 6:35 Your ring finger is longer than your index finger 7:20 You panic pretty easily 8:15 You have a bit of a potty mouth 9:01 SUMMARY -People with a high IQ feel comfortable in their own company. -The earlier you learned the alphabet, the more books you read throughout childhood, and the broader your horizons became. -The IQ of older children is higher by an average of 3 points than that of their younger siblings. -A study at Princeton University showed that taller children usually have higher IQ levels. -It may be the high intelligence itself that makes children choose music instead of something else. -Slimmer people are statistically more intelligent. -If you love sport, you might have less interest in learning new things. -Blue-eyed people usually do better in situations when you need to stop and analyze everything that's going on, instead of reacting to it. -If a squeaky floor, chips being crunched on, or even someone’s loud breathing can easily distract you, you're probably more intelligent than you think. -People with long ring fingers tend to be good at math and spatial thinking. -Smart people tend to be pessimistic and imagine all kinds of bad stuff that might happen to them. -Believe it or not, cussing is actually one of the signs of an above-average brain. Then this new Mathologer video about the mathematics of casino games like roulette, blackjack, etc. is for you. The video is based on talks by my friend and colleague Marty Ross who who knows a lot about beating the casinos at their own game. I do a bit of an interview with Marty at the end in this video but just in case you are interested in seeing him in some real Marty action, here is a link to a video of him giving a talk about sports gambling at the Melbourne Museum in 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXyCv6OMKfA Also check out his bad mathematics blog https://mathematicalcrap.com and his writeup of the solution our free coupon puzzle in Math Horizons http://www.qedcat.com/articles/coupon.pdf Anyway, thanks a lot to Marty for all his help with this video and to Danil (Dimitriev) for his continuing work on providing Russian subtitles for all Mathologer videos and Michael (Franklin) for his help with recording this video. Larger numbers indicate greater likelihood. A probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event, a probability around 1/2 indicates an event that is neither unlikely nor likely, and a probability near 1 indicates a likely event. 7.SP.C.7 Develop a probability model and use it to find probabilities of events. Compare probabilities from a model to observed frequencies; if the agreement is not good, explain possible sources of the discrepancy. What is a probability model? How can I help my kids understand probability? Where can I find free worksheets, acitivies, and lessons for middle school (7th and 8th grade) probability? The new positions of basketball: Muthu Alagappan at TEDxSpokane
Muthu Alagappan is a Pearson Prize National Fellow and a Stanford Mayfield Fellow, and is currently in his first year of medical school at Stanford School of Medicine. Muthu's other passion is basketball, a sport he grew up playing and watching frequently as a teenager in Houston. Inspired by the "Moneyball" revolution in baseball and the upcoming analytics movement in the NBA, Muthu began consulting for Ayasdi, a Palo Alto based startup, and using their computational topology software to perform basketball analytics. His presentation "Redefining the Positions of Basketball" at the 2012 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference received the award for Best Evolution of Sports talk. He was subsequently featured in a long-form piece by GQ titled "Muthuball," as well as in articles by the New York Times, ESPN, and the Wall Street Journal. In December 2012, he was named to Forbes 30 under 30 "Sports" alongside international superstars LeBron James and Usain Bolt, and he is currently working with NBA teams on applying his research to front office decision making. Can Video Games Become the Next Great Spectator Sport? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios
Viewers like you help make PBS (Thank you 😃) . Support your local PBS Member Station here: https://to.pbs.org/donateidea As our South Korean friends can confirm, video games can most definitely be a spectator sport. But will they ever catch on in a huge way in the good ol' U.S. of A? Well, pro leagues already exist, but to know if they'll ever reach the levels of March Madness and Superbowl Sunday, we need to take a closer look at traditional sports spectatorship to figure out the REAL reason we watch. It's more than just winning and losing: there are characters, rivalries, histories, and a host of other background information that coalesce into an AMAZING story, and we're dying to know the ending. The "Hot Hand" IS Real - Classic Fallacy Debunked
Probability and statistics rarely get this kind of attention. But this story is special. It’s about debunking a long-held statistics result that itself was about debunking sports lore. A 1985 study found that basketball players do not have a "hot hand." That is, players don't go on hot streaks or cold streaks. Our impression they do became known as the "hot hand fallacy." A new working paper now says the "hot hand" actually exists--the "hot hand fallacy" is actually a fallacy! The paper claims the 1985 paper made a subtle statistical mistake. This video gives the intuition about the paper and why its argument appears to be sound. Why the US national anthem is terrible — and perfect
Vox's Estelle Caswell and Joss Fong debate "The Star Spangled Banner" Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO When Francis Scott Key attached his poem about the War of 1812 to a popular British song called "To Anacreon in Heaven," he kicked off over 200 years of painfully bad singing by patriotic Americans. The Star Spangled Banner became the official national anthem of the United States in 1931, but it had been used by the Army and Navy for decades before that and was popular from the start. One big problem? The melody wasn't exactly written for the masses, but for trained soloists. Commentators pointed out early on that it was exceedingly difficult for most people to sing, suggesting that "America the Beautiful" might be a better alternative. Critics have noted that the music requires a uniquely wide vocal range, it's full of tricky intervals, and the lyrics are confusing and uninspiring. But if you look at the national anthem as a sport, where we get to watch performers at the top of their game tackle the gauntlet that is the Star Spangled Banner, you may come to appreciate it. In this video, we debate whether the difficulty of the Star Spangled Banner is a feature or a bug for a national anthem. 3 Mystery Riddles Only 1% of the Brightest Minds Can Crack
3 mystical riddles for those who believe In the paranormal. Here is your chance to feel like agents Scully and Mulder from “The X-Files” and solve some mysteries of the paranormal world. Are you ready? Then let’s give it a try! TIMESTAMPS Reflections 0:27 The Ghost and the King 3:12 Escaping the zombies 7:14 SUMMARY №1. You are entering a room with 4 mirrors. Look closely at each of them. Each mirror reflects a paranormal being. Three of them are illusory, and only one is real. Three creatures lie, and only one is telling the truth. Your task is to find out which of them exists. Here is what they want to tell you: The Skeleton claims that it is reflected in either mirror 2 or mirror 3. The Ghost says you can see its reflection in either mirror 1 or mirror 4. According to the Vampire, his reflection is in mirror 3. The Witch assures you she is definitely not in mirror 4. Now it’s your time to draw the right conclusions. In which of the mirrors is the existing creature reflected? №2. There once was a kingdom where a wise king Rupert was the ruler. He had a cousin James who was a true master of poisons dreaming of power. James was mean and evil and stabbed to death in one of the fights. Even after his death, he stalked Rupert as a ghost stuck in between the worlds. James said he would only let go of the King if he managed to solve his poison riddle. If he failed, Rupert would join his cousin in death as revenge for the crown James had never had. (ah c’mon guys, can’t we all just get along? Apparently not.) There were 12 poisons all marked 1 to 12 according to the fatality degree. So 1 was rather weak, and 12 led to death with no exceptions. Each poison higher on the fatality scale could neutralize the previous one. So 12 could cancel the effect of all other potions if you took it immediately after any other poison. All poisons were colorless and smelled like nothing, resembling water. King Rupert took all the odd-numbered poisons. James had all the even numbered poisons and was ready to celebrate the victory. They filled the cups for each other in turns. Quite unexpectedly, the King managed to win, and the ghost of James was banished forever. Can you guess what King Rupert did? №3. Once upon a time, in a secret lab high in the mountains, there was a young intern. By accident, he dropped a test tube with an experimental virus that turned people into zombies. (Hey, how come they never turn into Charlie’s Angels, or the lifeguards from Baywatch?) well, For some reason, the virus did not affect everyone. The intern, the lab assistant, the technician and the old professor didn’t turn into the living dead. All they want to do is escape from the lab, and you’re the only one who can help them. There is just one way to safety – to the top of another mountain across an old suspension bridge. The professor did some math and figured out that they’ve got 17 minutes before the zombies get to the bridge. Even if one zombie sets foot on the bridge, it will collapse. (of course) The only way to save everyone is to figure out a way to move them to the other side before time runs out. It’s not that easy to do it. The bridge is only strong enough for two people at the same time. And, you all can’t walk with the same speed. The intern is the athletic type and can cross the bridge in 1 minute. The lab assistant has never done any sports but is young and can get there in 2 minutes. The technician is pretty massive and will need 5 minutes to carry his muscly body to the other side. The old professor uses a walking cane and crossing the bridge will take him 10 minutes. And, since it’s all happening at night, you can’t move without a flashlight. They only had enough time to grab one of those, and it’s running out of battery, so it’s only good to light a little area around. Whoever is crossing the bridge will need the flashlight. Drink a Glass of Coconut Water for 2 Weeks, See What Happens to Your Body
Once upon a time, coconut water was only to be found in health stores. Now, this drink is so mainstream that it can be purchased from almost every grocery store. If you’re in the habit of chugging down a sports drink before or after working out, then here’s a better option for you! Sports drinks are usually packed with sugar, but you can find coconut water with a very low sugar content and get the same benefits that you would from a sports drink. Coconut water is designed to replenish the nutrients lost from sweating and physical exertion. TIMESTAMPS: It’s a good source of potassium 0:43 It’s a better choice than a sports drink 1:28 It packs a ton of electrolytes 2:02 It acts as a diuretic 3:00 It has antibacterial properties 3:34 It keeps your heart healthy 4:17 It can help you keep hydrated 5:14 Negative side effects 6:00 #coconutwater #helthydiet Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - One cup of coconut water contains about 17% of the recommended daily intake, making it a great source of potassium. - If you have diarrhea, are vomiting, sweat too much, or simply have an inadequate diet that doesn’t give you your minerals, you could suffer from an electrolyte imbalance...but not if you drink coconut water every day! - It also helps to cleanse the urinary tract, thus reducing your chances of getting a urinary tract infection. - Coconut water carries tannins, which are phytochemical components known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects. - According to a 2014 report in the journal Stroke, potassium can “ward off stroke and prevent early death in women.” - Coconut water shouldn’t replace regular water but should be used to keep you even more hydrated. - If you drink 2 large bottles, you’d be getting almost all of your sodium intake just from that drink. - Coconut water isn’t going to be good for you if it’s packed with sugar and adds to your calories. - Drinking it every day can definitely put you over your recommended daily calorie intake. - Be careful not to confuse coconut water with coconut milk! They’re both delicious, but coconut milk is extremely high in coconut fat and should be drunk as an occasional treat to maintain a healthy weight. http://www.course.eslinsider.com Get certified to teach English to kids with this online TEFL course: This is a fun warm-up activity for teaching very young children. It would probably work for some up until age 10. It works best for the very young and low level students. It's good for teaching body parts and commands. "Teacher Says" is a super fun activity to do with young kids. It works especially well with Kindergarteners to about 3rd grade.
