How to save money in your business and other money saving tips from Roger Green, owner of Operation Cost Cut in Edinburgh http://www.operationcostcut.co.uk Roger helps small and large companies how to save money by identifying areas where cost cutting is possible. I caught up with Roger in his Edinburgh office to record his five top tips so you can save money and improve your company profit. One. Set a target, know what you want to achieve from the outset. Is it maybe just three thousand pounds of cost saving, twenty thousand pounds, maybe more, know this from the outset it is really important if you want to save money. Two. Do not try and do it all single handed. Single handed cost cutting crusades tend not to work. Much better to get two or three people together, maybe even an expert from outside the company and you are far more likely to achieve what you set out to want to achieve. Three. The low hanging fruit of cost saving, go for those first. The utilities, the water, the telecoms, the merchant card services, fuel, stationary, print. Bench mark all these services, see if you are paying too much money, speak to your suppliers there are often great opportunities to save money by reducing these costs. There is a lot of elasticity in these costs. Four. Speak to your main supplier. See what you can do with your main supplier to renegotiate. Have you even bench marked your service with your with your main supplier for a long time? Quite often costs can creep up over the years and there is a great opportunity if you speak to them. Tell them what you want to achieve, let them know if there is three or four percent you want to shave off the cost and they maybe will be able to tailor their service to match your aims. Five. Review your people costs. Ask yourself is there anyone in your business who if they left you probably would not have to replace. Anyone who is less than fully busy, less than fully effective. Actually also look at out-sourcing. Are there things you could out-source? There are some great out-sourcing, very cheap, very good value out-sourcing opportunities with credit control, with payroll, with book keeping, with answering the phone. Have a look on people per hour, will be amazed at what opportunities there are for out-sourcing some services within your business and the savings that could bring to you. Not only will out-sourcing save on costs but the time you save can be used to make money. When designing a Strategy for Sales Perfection, one of the most consistently overlooked aspects is a comprehensive pricing and product management evaluation, both of which are comparable and essentially one in the same. A pricing appraisal of your business may involve some knowledge of competitive market intelligence supplied to you through customer communication, trade organizations, or internally obtained. The foundation behind the pricing review will be to confirm that your product is neither over-priced nor under-priced in any given market or trade area. This will inevitably improve margins in under-priced products and drive sales in over priced products. In many cases, this process will certainly improve your organizations profitability. Obviously, it will be difficult to raise prices to current customers due to this new found analysis, however, when making new sales presentations to new accounts you can use the higher price levels to increase profitability. Expand and investigate the revenue and product opportunity grid and begin the process of isolating product groups to segments or quadrants by customer opportunity. In reality you may need to perform additional analysis to draw valid conclusions. Once you have segmented your products and target customers, you will then begin to deploy a more effective product strategy plan and incorporate this into your overall sales plan. Core Customers Your current marketing efforts are effectively reaching this group, how can they be emulated to work as effectively with the other segments in B, C and D? The problem is they copy the wrong types of businesses, and the media sales people typically only know as much about effective marketing as the business owner does. Without the right kind of marketing system in place, the success of any business is by pure chance. To help remedy this situation, below are seven things a small business can do to increase profits while spending less on marketing. 1. Use the power of free stuff Everyone likes getting free stuff and you can use that to your advantage. If your business lends itself to giving away free samples of your product, do that. It helps get people hooked on it. Business profits have boomed on this marketing model. As Chris Anderson author of the book titled, "Free: The Future of a Radical Price" says, "You can make make money giving things away." In his book he talks about how businesses are giving away products and services they used to charge for, and in return, a percentage of their customers are buying something else. As a result, they are making more money than ever. When you give something away, you often activate a universal law called the "Law of Reciprocity." It says that when people get something free, they feel obligated to do something for you. Obviously it doesn't work every time, but it does work enough of the time. But there is another way to give away free stuff that can greatly benefit your business. When you do it right you get something very valuable in return: customer contact info...which leads us to the next tip. 2. Start capturing customer contact info and use it One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not tapping their current customer base. They let customers visit their business (online or offline) all day long without ever trying to capture their contact info so they can continue to market products or services to them. You likely know how expensive it can be to get a new customer. But you can market to your current customers for little or no cost. Capturing and using customer contact info can mean the difference between a profitable business and one that barely gets by. Your business has more customer value in it than a customer can possibly digest in a short visit so if you aren't continually marketing to your customers, you are throwing money away! You can make customer contact capture easier simply by using the power of free from tip number one. Simply start a monthly drawing to give away something free and print some registration slips visitors can fill out. Also have people register online on your website. Tell customers they only have to register once for all drawings and you will contact them monthly via email to let them know who won. Of course you will always include an offer for a product or service! What do you give away? Anything with a perceived value makes a great free item. Free items do not have to be expensive. Buy something on sale at WalMart or at eBay and offer it. You can also offer free informational reports that help people solve their problems. People are always looking for ways to solve problems they are having. Of course, once you capture this information you have to do something with it. Many business owners get frustrated with not know where to begin on how to increase sales or increase profits. They get stuck on whether to increase advertising, change the business website, increase prices or even reduce prices, but without a targeted approach. This is where I hope to provide you with some focus. I run through key numbers, 7 metrics which impact upon sales and profits, together with just three numbers from your profit and loss account. The strategies and tips explained in the video apply to any business. This is true of a bakery business, as in the video, a hotel business, a salon business, a restaurant business, a bar or a coffee shop business. The metrics I focus on include the average spend of customers, the number of times customers return, the percentage of customers that never return, the business’s audience reach, conversion rates for your audience reach to leads or prospects and then the conversion of leads/prospects into customers. Each one of the key performance indicators will impact profits. However, when they are combined and changed together, this is when your profits will soar. The best way to increase business profits is to have a focus. With Increase Profit Software you will have that focus. You will not need to focus on how you increase your sales and profits per se, but rather you pay attention to the individual profit drivers. So for example, if plan to increase the average amount spent by customers, i.e. the average transaction value, we focus on ways to do this. Let’s say the current average transaction value is £2.89, but we want to increase this to £5.78. Or to double it. What I suggest is that you spend time brain storming, include your employees in this brain storming session. Ask ‘how’ and ‘what’ questions. Also, engage with your customers. I recommend you use a client advisory board to get customer feedback about what you can do with your business. Customers are usually happy to provide their feedback on a business they enjoy visiting. The ‘how can my business increase profits’ changes to ‘how do I increase the average amount customer spend each time they visit my business?’ Or ‘what do I need to do in order to encourage customers to spend more each time they visit?’ These questions are powerful. I guarantee you’ll come up with empowering questions. If you approach increasing sales and profits in this way, you will be more focused. You will have targets to reach. What normally happens is you’ll focus on your new target and in most cases the target is exceeded.
