How to save money in your business and other money saving tips from Roger Green, owner of Operation Cost Cut in Edinburgh http://www.operationcostcut.co.uk Roger helps small and large companies how to save money by identifying areas where cost cutting is possible. I caught up with Roger in his Edinburgh office to record his five top tips so you can save money and improve your company profit. One. Set a target, know what you want to achieve from the outset. Is it maybe just three thousand pounds of cost saving, twenty thousand pounds, maybe more, know this from the outset it is really important if you want to save money. Two. Do not try and do it all single handed. Single handed cost cutting crusades tend not to work. Much better to get two or three people together, maybe even an expert from outside the company and you are far more likely to achieve what you set out to want to achieve. Three. The low hanging fruit of cost saving, go for those first. The utilities, the water, the telecoms, the merchant card services, fuel, stationary, print. Bench mark all these services, see if you are paying too much money, speak to your suppliers there are often great opportunities to save money by reducing these costs. There is a lot of elasticity in these costs. Four. Speak to your main supplier. See what you can do with your main supplier to renegotiate. Have you even bench marked your service with your with your main supplier for a long time? Quite often costs can creep up over the years and there is a great opportunity if you speak to them. Tell them what you want to achieve, let them know if there is three or four percent you want to shave off the cost and they maybe will be able to tailor their service to match your aims. Five. Review your people costs. Ask yourself is there anyone in your business who if they left you probably would not have to replace. Anyone who is less than fully busy, less than fully effective. Actually also look at out-sourcing. Are there things you could out-source? There are some great out-sourcing, very cheap, very good value out-sourcing opportunities with credit control, with payroll, with book keeping, with answering the phone. Have a look on people per hour, will be amazed at what opportunities there are for out-sourcing some services within your business and the savings that could bring to you. Not only will out-sourcing save on costs but the time you save can be used to make money. Your companies' products and price strategy can have a dramatic impact on your margins and income return. Every company has areas where improvements in customer penetration and pricing channels will yield positive results. Revamp or create price indexes based upon specific customer channels. Evaluate your proprietary product categories for both pricing suitability and customer channel dissemination. Expand and study the revenue and product opportunity grid and develop a strategy to penetrate and saturate each of these markets with products where you currently have no influence.

Start capturing customer contact info and use it One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not tapping their current customer base. You likely know how expensive it can be to get a new customer. But you can market to your current customers for little or no cost. Capturing and using customer contact info can mean the difference between a profitable business and one that barely gets by. You know what that means! It gives us owners and operators the time we need to work ON our business and NOT in our business. Right now you should be thinking business growth. What can I do to increase sales, what can I do to get more customers in the door, and what can I do to get customers coming back more often? Today I’m going to tell you how to give yourself a minimum of a $21,600 pay raise while losing 10% of your customers. Yes sounds crazy but stay with me. This is important for your goals in 2015. The easiest way to increase sales and make more money is to increase prices, right? But most owners are scared to death to increase prices because they are worried these customers will leave and go to the competition. Today I’m going to help you get over that fear and help you make the money you deserve. Think about it. When was the last time one of your beer distributors, liquor distributors, or food distributors raised their prices on you? The last 3 years in a row my vendors have raised their prices, not by a whole lot, but it adds up year after year, bottle after bottle. Bar owners know they should raise prices, they are just worried of losing customers to the competition over it. I know this because I felt this way years back and now at both of the bars I own I’m higher then 95% of my competitors. So lets dive into an example here. Lets say you sell on average 8,000 drinks per month, that’s 2,000 drinks a week. If you raised all your beer, wine, liquor, and pop prices by just a quarter you’d make an extra $26,000 a year. But lets say 10% of your customers just can’t afford that extra $1 they spend on 4 drinks and they go to your competitors bar, which isn’t likely to happen.
