Microcrystalline cellulose is a term for refined wood pulp and is used as a texturizer, an anti-caking agent, a fat substitute, an emulsifier, an extender, and a bulking agent in food production. The most common form is used in vitamin supplements or tablets. It is also used in plaque assays for counting viruses, as an alternative to carboxymethylcellulose. In many ways, cellulose makes the ideal excipient. A naturally occurring polymer, it is composed of glucose units connected by a 1-4 beta glycosidic bond. These linear cellulose chains are bundled together as microfibril spiralled together in the walls of plant cell. Each microfibril exhibits a high degree of three-dimensional internal bonding resulting in a crystalline structure that is insoluble in water and resistant to reagents. There are, however, relatively weak segments of the microfibril with weaker internal bonding. These are called amorphous regions; some argue that they are more accurately called dislocations, because of the single-phase structure of microfibrils. The crystalline region is isolated to produce microcrystalline cellulose. Approved within the European Union as a thickener, stabilizer or emulsifiers microcrystalline cellulose was granted the E number E460(i) with basic cellulose given the number E460. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is pure partially depolymerized cellulose synthesized from ?-cellulose precursor. The MCC can be synthesized by different processes such as reactive extrusion, enzyme mediated, steam explosion and acid hydrolysis. The later process can be done using mineral acids such as H2SO4, HCl and HBr as well as ionic liquids. The role of these reagents is to destroy the amorphous regions remaining the crystalline domains. The degree of polymerization is typically less than 400. The MCC particles with size lower than 5 µm must not be more than 10%. The MCC is a valuable additive in pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and other industries. Different properties of MCC are measured to qualify its suitability to such utilization, namely particle size, density, compressibility index, angle of repose, powder porosity, hydration swelling capacity, moisture sorption capacity, moisture content, crystallinity index, crystallite size and mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) or differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are also important to predict the thermal behavior of the MCC upon heat stresses.

The main applications of cellulose fibers are in textile industry, as chemical filter, and fiber-reinforcement composite, due to their similar properties to engineered fibers, being another option for biocomposites and polymer composites. Cellulose fibers market has been witnessing strong growth over the past few years on account of increasing demand from textile industry. Growing environmental friendly, skin friendly and bio-degradable fabrics demand is the key factor, expected to drive the market by 2020. Cellulose is a polymer made of repeating glucose molecules attached end to end. A cellulose molecule may be from several hundred to over 10,000 glucose units long. Cellulose is similar in form to complex carbohydrates like starch and glycogen. These polysaccharides are also made from multiple subunits of glucose. The difference between cellulose and other complex carbohydrate molecules is how the glucose molecules are linked together. In addition, cellulose is a straight chain polymer, and each cellulose molecule is long and rod-like. This differs from starch, which is a coiled molecule. A result of these differences in structure is that, compared to starch and other carbohydrates, cellulose cannot be broken down into its glucose subunits by any enzymes produced by animals. Natural cellulose fibers are fibers that are still recognizable as being from a part of the original plant because they are only processed as much as needed to clean the fibers for use. For example, cotton fibers look like the soft fluffy cotton balls that they come from. Linen fibers look like the strong fibrous strands of the flax plant. All "natural" fibers go through a process where they are separated from the parts of the plant that are not used for the end product, usually through harvesting, separating from chaff, scouring, etc. The presence of linear chains of thousands of glucose units linked together allows a great deal of hydrogen bonding between OH groups on adjacent chains, causing them to pack closely into cellulose fibers. As a result, cellulose exhibits little interaction with water or any other solvent. Cotton and wood, for example, are completely insoluble in water and have considerable mechanical strength. Since cellulose does not have a helical structure like amylose, it does not bind to iodine to form a colored product. Natural fibers are compose by microfibrils of cellulose in a matrix of hemicellulose and lignin. This type of structure, and the chemical composition of them is responsible for the mechanical properties that can be observed. Because the natural fibers make hydrogen bonds between the long chains, they have the necessary stiffness and strength. Manufactured cellulose fibers come from plants that are processed into a pulp and then extruded in the same ways that synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon are made. Rayon or viscose is one of the most common "manufactured" cellulose fibers, and it can be made from wood pulp.

Andrew Davis discussed the work of 20th-centry paper chemist William J. Barrow, who undertook an ambitious study of 1,000 books printed from the 16th through 20th centuries, meticulously measuring their chemical and physical properties and offering systematic predictions of paper aging and permanence. These same test books now reside in the Center for the Library's Analytical Scientific Samples in the Library of Congress. This talk presented results using advancements in scientific tools to reassess and measure Barrow's same sample books anew. In particular, new micro-invasive tools provide the ability to quantify the degradation effects of aging, enabling new insights and mathematical methods for minimally-destructive paper material analysis. Speaker Biography: Andrew Davis is a chemist in the Preservation Research and Testing Division at the Library of Congress. While the TG and DTA curves indicate thermal decomposition of cellulose between 200 and 350°C, the images show the sample color starting to change below 200°C. In the oxidative decomposition at about 450°C, the color turned to white with some flame spark due to intense reaction.

Preparation of Picric Acid (Revisited and Revised)

Making picric acid via a nitration of Acetylsalicyllic acid or more commonly known as asprin. We use Ethanol to extract the ASA which is separated via filtration through celite. the filtrate is evaporated to give us the starting product. The reaction must be done in a well ventilated area and in a tall form beaker. overflows will result otherwise. Next we sulfonate the ASA in hot concentrated sulfuric acid for an hour and upon slight cooling we begin to add the correct amount of sodium nitrate. this nitrates the ASA firstly into the mono and dinitro forms of ASA and upon the last of the nitrate additions and heating we get the third nitro group attached giving us the trinitrophenol product. The crude product is then recrystallized from boiling water. The yield from this was 47.2g from 45g of the ASA Starting material so it is pretty high yielding usually 80-85% if done correctly. i didn't quite get that however still pretty pleasing. Generally the formation of CuN3 is avoided at all costs!!! the impact sensitivity is many times greater than it's lead or silver counterparts and is some of the most sensitive materials i have worked with so far. A hammer falling by it's own weight from about 2inch detonated it in 3 out of 5 times i tested it. i can see why they are weary of copper around lead azide...... some copper II azide was made by combining the correct molar ratios of aqueous solutions of both sodium azide and copper II nitrate. The solutions were dripped into water to form the CuN3 on the interface at first, before stirring with a PTFE rod. This yields copper II Azide and a sodium nitrate as a side product. I Attempt to make white phosphorus using the same method as my other video except the Al powder is not the dark powder...... the NaPO3 was 25g ,11.25g Al ,15g SiO2 and a couple of grams of NaCl to help the melt become more fluid. I welded up a special all steel setup just for this using some steel tube and Gal plumbing bits with the Zn coating removed with HCl. It Failed though... There was a hole melted in the side of the retort and my product was lost. there was a rather inefficient collection vessel. possibly the expansion of the slag plugged the exit and pressure built up and exited where the retort wall became thin due to melting under the high temperature of my forge. it also seems like there was considerable losses to P4 vapours that did not have time to condense. I Will be trying again soon enough

Out of a curiosity i decided to make some Cs Picrate to see how it performed under a flame test. the following was an experiment basically identical process to forming other metal picrates: firstly i took a boiling hot solution of about a gram of Picric acid dissolved in about 35mls of boiling distilled H2O and whilst still hot i neutralized the acid with some CsOH, also in an aqueous solution. as soon as the neutralization had occurred and the solution had cooled a little there was a fairly quick crashing of crystals from the solution. i was surprised that as much product formed as it did. i actually thought that it would be more soluble than it was. anyway it deflagrated under flame fairly quickly after first turning red and melting then finally flashing off in a nice violet colored flame. The foil confined picrate detonated quite nicely with a loud report. the higher density pressed foil detonated very loudly in a confetti of foil.

Isopropyl nitrite (C3H7NO2) is a transparent yellow oily solvent which is commonly used in ""poppers" alkyl nitrite preparations which are usually inhaled for the purpose of heightened sexual arousal and desire. This synthesis is a common preparation and i just wanted to show my take on this synthesis. this synthesis makes a highly flammable solvent whose vapours can induce low blood pressure and dizziness along with potentially deadly NOxx fumes which can cause pulmonary edema with extended exposure. it makes a very strong solvent capable of dissolving chemically resistant vacuum grease and can pass through some gloves. Generally regarded to be the first thermoplastic, it was first created as Parkesine in 1862 and as Xylonite in 1869, before being registered as Celluloid in 1870. Celluloid is easily molded and shaped, and it was first widely used as an ivory replacement. Celluloid is highly flammable and also easily decomposes, and is no longer widely used. Its most common uses today are in table tennis balls and guitar picks. Nitrocellulose Nitrocellulose-based plastics slightly predate celluloid. Collodion, invented in 1848 and used as a wound dressing and an emulsion for photographic plates, is dried to a celluloid-like film. Alexander Parkes The first celluloid as a bulk material for forming objects was made in 1855 in Birmingham, England, by Alexander Parkes, who was never able to see his invention reach full fruition, after his firm went bankrupt due to scale-up costs. Parkes patented his discovery after realising a solid residue remained after evaporation of the solvent from photographic collodion. Parkes patented it as a clothing waterproof for woven fabrics in the same year. Later in 1862, Parkes showcased Parkesine at the Great Exhibition in London, where he was awarded a bronze medal for his efforts. The introduction of Parkesine is generally regarded as the birth of the plastics industry. Parkes mixed cellulose nitrate with camphor, producing a hard, flexible, and transparent material. Cellulose nitrate was dissolved in a small measure of solvent, this was then heated and rolled on a purpose-built machine which extracted a proportion of the solvent. Finally, the use of pressure or dyes completed the manufacturing process. In 1866, Parkes tried again with his invention, and he created a company to manufacture and market Parkesine, but this failed in 1868 after trying to cut costs to enable further manufacture. John Wesley and Isaiah Hyatt In the 1860s, an American, John Wesley Hyatt, acquired Parkes' patent and began experimenting with cellulose nitrate with the intention of manufacturing billiard balls, which until that time were made from ivory. He used cloth, ivory dust, and shellac, and on April 6, 1869, patented a method of covering billiard balls with the addition of collodion, and formed the Albany Billiard Ball Company in Albany, New York, to manufacture the product. In 1870, John and his brother Isaiah patented a process of making a "horn-like material" with the inclusion of cellulose nitrate and camphor. Alexander Parkes and Spill listed camphor during their earlier experiments, calling the resultant mix "xylonite", but it was the Hyatt brothers who recognized the value of camphor and its use as a plasticizer for cellulose nitrate. basically a test run of a procedure i found which is a micro scale run to make White phosphorus. the original publisher cited this equation : 6NaPO3 + 10AI + 3Si02 = 3Na2Si03 + 5Al203 + 3P2 which was first published over a century ago by j.franck. The publisher cited a 50% yield of 250mg out of the 500mg available P which was reportedly re sublimed to separate the white from the red P. these two runs were basically a test run to prove the concept for myself and to see how the reaction proceeds before i scale it up with a steel retort . it seems to have worked very well and at a much lower temperature than i thought. Experimental: 3g of a stochiometric ratio of sodium hexametaphosphate, silicon dioxide and dark aluminium powder in slight excess were well dried in an oven and mixed thoroughly in a plastic tub. Exactly 3g of this mixture was placed in an 18mm Test tube and this was sealed with a stopper which i had bored with two holes, one for argon to be inlet and one for a bent glass leading into cold water. paper toweling was wrapped around the tube and wet with ice water. the tube was then heated with a butane torch firstly and a MAPP torch for the second attempt. the second attempt worked better. I was able to get a little product recovered -i did not weigh it and watched it burn. but this was pretty much a test run with bigger and better attempts to come.

CESA TRAFFICKING INHIBITOR Inhibits Cellulose Deposition and Interferes with the Trafficking of Cellulose Synthase Complexes and Their Associated Proteins KORRIGAN1 and POM2/CELLULOSE SYNTHASE INTERACTIVE PROTEIN1. Natasha Worden et al (2015), Plant Physiology http://dx.doi.org/10.1104/pp.114.249003 Cellulose synthase complexes (CSCs) at the plasma membrane (PM) are aligned with cortical microtubules (MTs) and direct the biosynthesis of cellulose. The mechanism of the interaction between CSCs and MTs, and the cellular determinants that control the delivery of CSCs at the PM, are not yet well understood. We identified a unique small molecule, CESA TRAFFICKING INHIBITOR (CESTRIN), which reduces cellulose content and alters the anisotropic growth of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) hypocotyls. We monitored the distribution and mobility of fluorescently labeled cellulose synthases (CESAs) in live Arabidopsis cells under chemical exposure to characterize their subcellular effects. CESTRIN reduces the velocity of PM CSCs and causes their accumulation in the cell cortex. The CSC-associated proteins KORRIGAN1 (KOR1) and POM2/CELLULOSE SYNTHASE INTERACTIVE PROTEIN1 (CSI1) were differentially affected by CESTRIN treatment, indicating different forms of association with the PM CSCs. KOR1 accumulated in bodies similar to CESA; however, POM2/CSI1 dissociated into the cytoplasm. In addition, MT stability was altered without direct inhibition of MT polymerization, suggesting a feedback mechanism caused by cellulose interference. The selectivity of CESTRIN was assessed using a variety of subcellular markers for which no morphological effect was observed. The association of CESAs with vesicles decorated by the trans-Golgi network-localized protein SYNTAXIN OF PLANTS61 (SYP61) was increased under CESTRIN treatment, implicating SYP61 compartments in CESA trafficking. The properties of CESTRIN compared with known CESA inhibitors afford unique avenues to study and understand the mechanism under which PM-associated CSCs are maintained and interact with MTs and to dissect their trafficking routes in etiolated hypocotyls.
