COOL SCHOOL HACKS Can you believe it's fall already? Goodness. My eldest niece has just started elementary school and I've been eyeing all the colorful back-to-school supplies. Since we love making rainbow crafts, I thought it would be fun to make our own DIY Rainbow Marker. And guess what? It took less than a minute to make. And then- tada! We swiped this marker to create a whole spectrum of lovely colors! How to Make a DIY Rainbow Marker Ok. So, let's make our rainbow marker... in less than a minute. Drum roll please. Grab a yellow marker. Then, grab purple and green highlighter markers. (Actually, you can use any colors you want!) Then, color in your yellow marker as so, making sure to color all the way around the tip. Now drag your yellow marker over a sheet of paper. A rainbow appears! And that's it! Of course, rainbow making capabilities will NOT be permanent. But this neat "Wow" activity for kids will certainly brighten up everyone's day! Happy crafting, my friends! Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.
You should totally check out these awesome marker hacks!First of all, I'm gonna show you how to erase permanent marker from anything! A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids
Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! There is a unique method in Japanese schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt it! It’s called “Nameless paints.” In this video, we'll tell you how it works. Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. - In Japanese schools, students don’t take any exams until they reach grade four (the age of 10). The goal for the first three years of school is not to judge the child’s knowledge, but to establish good manners and to develop their character. - While most schools in the world begin their academic year in September or October, in Japan, it is April that marks the start of the academic and business calendar. The first day of school often coincides with one of the most beautiful natural phenomena — the time of cherry blossom. - In Japanese schools, students have to clean the classrooms, cafeterias, and even toilets all by themselves. Most Japanese schools do not employ janitors or custodians. - All classmates eat in their classroom together with the teacher. This helps build positive teacher-student relationships. - To get into a good junior high school, most Japanese students enter a preparatory school or attend private after-school workshops. - Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo, involves dipping a bamboo brush in ink and using it to write hieroglyphs on rice paper. - While some schools have their attire, traditional Japanese school uniform consists of a military style for boys and a sailor outfit for girls. - At the end of high school, Japanese students have to take an exam that determines their future. A student can choose one college they would like to go to, and that college has a particular score requirement. - Having gone through ‘examination hell,’ Japanese students usually take a little break. In this country, college is often considered the best years of a person’s life. Sometimes, Japanese people call this period a ‘vacation’ before work. Are Students Juuling in Your Classroom?
JUULing and other forms of vaping have become extremely popular among teenagers. JUULs are tiny and look more like computer thumb drives than cigarettes, which makes them hard for teachers to detect. Also, they come in different flavors and don’t emit much vapor. These devices contain a lot of nicotine and can disrupt a classroom, and students’ learning, in serious ways. Education Week’s Kavitha Cardoza has some tips on how educators can recognize JUULing and what they can do about it. Inside Out and Emotional Health
Related article: Inside Out and Emotional Health http://thecreativemind.net/1885/inside-out-and-emotional-health/ The animated movie "Inside Out" tells the story of a young girl, Riley, who has to leave her Midwest life behind when her family moves to San Francisco. Characters depict her primary emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - and the inner conflicts they cause her, as well as her parents, who have their own inner conflicts to deal with. The movie was named "Best Animated Feature" at the 2016 Oscars. In her review for Counseling Today magazine, Erin Shifflett writes: "A person’s mind is a mysterious labyrinth of thoughts, feelings, memories, ideas and compulsions; the mind of a young girl is likely even more complex. "Disney-Pixar’s latest animated offering, Inside Out, bravely delves into that intricate world in a way that effectively captures the nuances of the way people feel and think—and maybe helps them understand why they act the way they do sometimes. "Developed with the guidance of University of California, Berkeley psychologist Dacher Keltner, the film tells the tale of Riley, an 11-year old whose family relocates from Minnesota to San Francisco. "Through the move, Riley loses her friends and beloved hockey team and is forced to transition to a place where pizza is served with broccoli as a topping and the cool girls in school wear eye shadow, much to Riley’s surprise." Shifflett describes the role of the "five emotions operating at Headquarters (Riley’s brain): Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger. ... "The importance of Sadness and, indeed, the other less pleasant emotions such as Fear, Disgust and Anger, is highlighted multiple times throughout the film when their roles and functions are explained." From Emotion, personified: What “Inside Out” gets right about mental health By Erin Shifflett June 25, 2015. Inside Out was named "Best Animated Feature" at the 2016 Academy Awards. Producers and director Pete Docter said in his acceptance speech: "This film was really born from watching our kids grow up, which is not easy! "Anyone out there who's in junior high, high school, working it out, suffering - there are days you're going to feel sad. You're going to feel angry. You're going to feel scared. That's nothing you can choose. "But you can make stuff. Make films. Draw. Write. It will make a world of difference." How to Conduct a Socratic Seminar
In this video, Waialua High and Intermediate School 7th grade AVID students explain and demonstrate how to carry out a Socratic Seminar, a group discussion format that revolves around open-ended questions and encourages listening, critical thinking, and discussion (rather than debate) aimed at finding common ground. Socrates believed that enabling students to think for themselves was more important than filling their heads with the “right answers.” In a Socratic Seminar, participants seek a deeper understanding of complex ideas through rigorously thoughtful dialogue, rather than by memorizing bits of information. Overview: -A moderator prompts the use of dialogue . -Participants share thoughts and collaborate to increase their understanding. -Participants are less attached to their ideas and less reliant on persuasion for influencing opinions. -Dialogue is a skill of collaboration that enables groups to create collective thinking. Here are simple steps and guidelines to follow: 1. Teacher prepares students in advance by having them use critical reading strategies (previewing, marking the text, writing in the margins, etc.) to read articles about the issue and develop open-ended questions. 2. Students come together with their reading material and questions. 3. A moderator starts by asking for a participant to share a question. 4. Participants respond by sharing their ideas and using personal experience, examples, and the text for evidence. No one dominates; everyone take turns talking; no interrupting or debating. Speakers should acknowledge the person who speaks before him/her: “That was a good/interesting point. I also think/I’d like to add that…” “I see what you’re saying, but I also think…” 5. The moderator can summarize the discussion at the end (or ask a participant to summarize) and discuss how the discussion went. Goal=to achieve a deeper understanding of the issue. Note: A "fishbowl" strategy can be used when you have a large class (over 25 students) by dividing the class into an inner and outer circle. Only the students in the inner circle speak but partner with someone in the outer circle who can pass them ideas. Outer circle members can whisper or pass notes with ideas/points for their inner circle partner to share. Moderator may rotate positions. An effective seminar consists of four interdependent elements: 1. the text being considered (e.g., an article the class read) 2. the questions raised by participants 3. the seminar moderator/leader 4. the participants The moderator/leader... -Acts as a facilitator during the discussion. -Helps participants clarify their positions when arguments become confused. -Involves reluctant participants by retraining more vocal peers. The participants... -Share responsibility for the quality of the seminar. -Study the text closely in advance. -Come with open-ended questions. -Listen actively. -Share their ideas and questions in response to others. -Search for evidence in the text to support their ideas. Follow-up questions to ask after watching this video: 1. What did you notice about the discussion and the way students participated? 2. What are some benefits of using a Socratic Seminar in class? 3. When would it be a good idea to do a Socratic Seminar in class? 4. Watch the video on another discussion format Philosophical Chairs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5F8c8VLa4Q. How is a Socratic Seminar different from Philosophical Chairs? What kinds of situations/learning contexts would be best for each discussion format? Which format do you like better? Why? Helping Students Identify Fake News with the Five C's of Critical Consuming
Here's the script: With digital tools, it is easier than ever to create, edit, and publish your work to the world. But there’s a cost. It’s also easier than ever to spread misinformation. And fake news has become a real issue in recent times. We see this with students. According to a Stanford study, only 25% of high school students were able to identify an accurate news story when also given a fake one. Students also had a hard time distinguishing between real and fake photographs as well as authentic and staged videos. Researchers used the words “bleak” and “dismaying” to describe it. But it’s not going away anytime soon and that’s a very real problem. So, how do we fix it? Well, here’s a five-step process that I’ve used with students. A word of caution. It’s not perfect and there are probably other models out there but I thought I would share it just in case you might want to use it. We call it the 5 c’s of critical consuming. #1: Context - Look at the context of the article. When was it written? Where does it come from? Have the events changed since then? Is there any new information that could change your perspective? #2: Credibility - Check the credibility of the source. Does the site have a reputation for journalistic integrity? Does the author cite credible sources? Or is it satirical? Is it on a list of fake news sites? Is it actually an advertisement posing as a real news story? #3: Construction. Analyze the construction of the article. What is the bias? Are there any loaded words? Any propaganda techniques? Any omissions that you should look out for? Can you distinguish between the facts and opinions? Or is it simply all speculation? #4: Corroboration: Corroborate the information with other credible news sources. Make sure it’s not the only source making the claim. If it is, there’s a good chance it’s actually not true. #5: Compare: Compare it to other news sources to get different perspectives. Find other credible sources from other areas of the ideological or political spectrum to provide nuance and get a bigger picture of what’s actually happening. See, when we teach students media literacy, and they learn how to consume critically, they learn how to think critically. And critical thinking citizens are good for democracy. And that’s good for everyone.

The First Generation - a Middle School Play
Written by Lizzy Cooper ’63 Lowrey and her students in 1991 to honor Punahou’s 150th anniversary, this play picks up the story of Punahou’s first year after the Founders Play ends. It is based on original journals and newspaper articles written by the first Punahou students. Current Junior School drama teacher Heather Taylor ’92 revived the play to celebrate the School’s 175th anniversary. The play was performed for students, faculty and staff in Thurston Memorial Chapel in March 2016. The play begins with the very first day of school: July 11, 1842. Junior School students reenacted scenes of students traveling to campus in wagons, working in the School’s gardens and studying constellations. The play also introduced students to several individuals who played a vital role in the founding and establishing of Punahou.
