Installing Linux & Windows in Dual Boot: CORRECT PARTITION SCHEME & BOOT LOADER SETUP

16:12
In this video, I will cover two important steps of Installing Linux alongside your windows OS. 1) Choosing the correct Partition scheme 2) Setting up your Windows Boot loader to boot to Linux instead of Linux bootloader (e.g : GRUB) During a standard Linux installation, a user do not have to worry about this. But when you are trying to install Linux in separate partition, keeping your current OS, it gets little trickier. If you do not configure these two options correctly, you might end up corrupting your bootloader or previous OS installation. I will also show how you can add your Linux os option to the Windows 8 bootloader using BCDedit. This is important so that in case in future if you decide to get rid of Linux OS, your computer boots normally without any issues.

How To Change Boot Order In Computer BIOS [For Beginners]

02:54
This tutorial demonstrates how to launch the built-in BIOS utility to change the boot order of your devices on your computer. If you are looking to set the primary boot device to a usb flash drive/stick or CD/DVD follow these steps. If you ever want to change these settings back, you can do so following the keyboard shortcuts located in the BIOS. Remember to always save your changes before closing out of the utility. To boot from a CD, DVD or USB device, make sure that the device has boot sequence priority over the hard drive. BIOS (Basic Input Output Subsystem) is a programmable chip that controls how information is passed to various devices in the computer system. A typical method to access the BIOS settings screen is to press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the boot sequence. BIOS settings allow you to run a boot sequence from a floppy drive, a hard drive, a CD-ROM drive or an external device. You may configure the order that your computer searches these physical devices for the boot sequence. The first device in the order list has the first boot priority. For example, to boot from a CD-ROM drive instead of a hard drive, place the CD-ROM drive ahead of the hard drive in priority. Before you set boot priority for a USB device, plug the device into a USB port. To specify the boot sequence: 1. Start the computer and press ESC, F1, F2, F8 or F10 during the initial startup screen. Depending on the BIOS manufacturer, a menu may appear. 2. Choose to enter BIOS setup. The BIOS setup utility page appears. 3. Use the arrow keys to select the BOOT tab. System devices appear in order of priority. 4. To give a CD or DVD drive boot sequence priority over the hard drive, move it to the first position in the list. 5. To give a USB device boot sequence priority over the hard drive, do the following: Move the hard drive device to the top of the boot sequence list. Expand the hard drive device to display all hard drives. Move the USB device to the top of the list of hard drives. Save and exit the BIOS setup utility. 6. The computer will restart with the changed settings. 7. Boot Priority Options Some computer manufacturers allow you to select the device that contains the boot sequence from a special device selection menu. The example below uses a Dell system board. To set boot priority using a device selection menu: 1.When the computer starts to boot up, after the manufacturer's ID screen, press F12 several times. The device selection menu appears. 2. Use the up and down arrows to select CD-ROM or an USB Flash Drive. 3. To boot from the selected device, press ENTER. Note: Using an incorrect BIOS setting can cause a system malfunction. Please follow the BIOS guide provided with your computer motherboard. If you read these instructions and you are not sure how to change a setting, it is better to leave it as the default setting. This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).

How to Dual Boot Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10 [2018]

08:54
Dual boot means you can have more than one operating system in one system and you can choose which OS you want to use at the boot time. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to install Ubuntu 18.04 alongside Windows 10 in dual boot. This way you'll get to use both Ubuntu Linux and Windows on the same system. In my opinion, dual booting Ubuntu with Windows is the best way to enjoy both the operating system on the true hardware which is not possible if you use either of Windows or Ubuntu Linux on a virtual machine. Newer computers and newer Ubuntu versions support secure UEFI boot so you don't have to disable fast boot or secure boot anymore. Installing Ubuntu and Windows in the same system has become a lot easier and hassle free. However, I recommend making a backup of your data on an external hard disk, keep a Windows 10 bootable USB or a Grub repair disk with you to avoid any unfortunate events while dealing with partitions and boot settings. How to Dual Boot Windows 8 and CentOS 7

13:37
I haven't made a video in a while. Here's how to dual boot Windows 8 and CentOS 7. CentOS: https://www.centos.org/download/ Download CentOS-7.0-livecd.iso from: https://www.centos.org/download/ Universal USB Installer: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ Use Universal USB Installer to install CentOS 7.0 onto a USB Flash Drive. Right click on This PC and click Manage. Create a partition by shrinking the main drive's volume. Use the partition for a new drive. Restart. Use F12 to go into Boot Options. Select USB Storage Device and proceed. Under manual partitioning, click on the minus to free the partition you just created. Now click on the + and add the following partitions: /home - 9000 MB /swap - 2000 MB / - everything else (For me, 143.6 GB) For each of these partitions, make sure they are of type Standard and have file format: ext4 Now, install CentOS 7, and reboot into CentOS. Once booted, open up a terminal. Type: sudo vim /boot/grub2/grub.cfg OR sudo gedit /boot/grub2/grub.cfg (gedit is more like notepad if you're unfamiliar with vim) Vim is a text editor. You can also use gedit, vim commands: i is to insert text esc is to exit insert mode :q is to quit vim :x is to quit and save vim Add the following to grub.cfg to create a menu entry for Windows 8: menuentry "Windows 8" { set root='(hd0, 2)' chainloader +1 } Click on the drive from the file explorer to find out what sda number the storage of Windows is on. For me, since Windows 8 was on sda3, I knew that the boot drive for Windows was on 2 (the number above). Reboot and you have a Windows 8 entry. Boot process in Linux

Linux Booting Process Steps: 6 Stages of Linux Boot Process (Startup Sequence) Press the power button on your system, and after few moments you see the Linux login prompt MUSIC CREDITS :ON MY WAY KEVIN MACLEOD-IN COMPETECH.COM https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ ISRC: USUAN1600062 Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes from the time you press the power button until the Linux login prompt appears? The following are the 6 high level stages of a typical Linux boot process. 1. BIOS BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System Performs some system integrity checks Searches, loads, and executes the boot loader program. It looks for boot loader in floppy, cd-rom, or hard drive. You can press a key (typically F12 of F2, but it depends on your system) during the BIOS startup to change the boot sequence. Once the boot loader program is detected and loaded into the memory, BIOS gives the control to it. So, in simple terms BIOS loads and executes the MBR boot loader. 2. MBR MBR stands for Master Boot Record. It is located in the 1st sector of the bootable disk. Typically /dev/hda, or /dev/sda MBR is less than 512 bytes in size. This has three components 1) primary boot loader info in 1st 446 bytes 2) partition table info in next 64 bytes 3) mbr validation check in last 2 bytes. It contains information about GRUB (or LILO in old systems). So, in simple terms MBR loads and executes the GRUB boot loader. 3. GRUB GRUB stands for Grand Unified Bootloader. If you have multiple kernel images installed on your system, you can choose which one to be executed. GRUB displays a splash screen, waits for few seconds, if you don’t enter anything, it loads the default kernel image as specified in the grub configuration file. GRUB has the knowledge of the filesystem (the older Linux loader LILO didn’t understand filesystem). Grub configuration file is /boot/grub/grub.conf (/etc/grub.conf is a link to this). The following is sample grub.conf of CentOS. #boot=/dev/sda default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title CentOS (2.6.18-194.el5PAE) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5PAE ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-194.el5PAE.img As you notice from the above info, it contains kernel and initrd image. So, in simple terms GRUB just loads and executes Kernel and initrd images. 4. Kernel Mounts the root file system as specified in the “root=” in grub.conf Kernel executes the /sbin/init program Since init was the 1st program to be executed by Linux Kernel, it has the process id (PID) of 1. Do a ‘ps -ef | grep init’ and check the pid. initrd stands for Initial RAM Disk. initrd is used by kernel as temporary root file system until kernel is booted and the real root file system is mounted. It also contains necessary drivers compiled inside, which helps it to access the hard drive partitions, and other hardware. 5. Init Looks at the /etc/inittab file to decide the Linux run level. Following are the available run levels 0 – halt 1 – Single user mode 2 – Multiuser, without NFS 3 – Full multiuser mode 4 – unused 5 – X11 6 – reboot Init identifies the default initlevel from /etc/inittab and uses that to load all appropriate program. Execute ‘grep initdefault /etc/inittab’ on your system to identify the default run level If you want to get into trouble, you can set the default run level to 0 or 6. Since you know what 0 and 6 means, probably you might not do that. Typically you would set the default run level to either 3 or 5. 6. Runlevel programs When the Linux system is booting up, you might see various services getting started. For example, it might say “starting sendmail …. OK”. Those are the runlevel programs, executed from the run level directory as defined by your run level. Depending on your default init level setting, the system will execute the programs from one of the following directories. Run level 0 – /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/ Run level 1 – /etc/rc.d/rc1.d/ Run level 2 – /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/ Run level 3 – /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ Run level 4 – /etc/rc.d/rc4.d/ Run level 5 – /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/ Run level 6 – /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/ Please note that there are also symbolic links available for these directory under /etc directly. So, /etc/rc0.d is linked to /etc/rc.d/rc0.d. Under the /etc/rc.d/rc*.d/ directories, you would see programs that start with S and K. Programs starts with S are used during startup. S for startup. Programs starts with K are used during shutdown. K for kill. There are numbers right next to S and K in the program names. Those are the sequence number in which the programs should be started or killed. For example, S12syslog is to start the syslog deamon, which has the sequence number of 12. S80sendmail is to start the sendmail daemon, which has the sequence number of 80. So, syslog program will be started before sendmail. There you have it. That is what happens during the Linux boot process.

And a copy of OS X Mavericks 10.9 Developer Preview. As always... Make sure that you have made a backup of your hard drive, especially when working with Partitioning your hard drive using the Mac Disk Utility program. So with all that out of the way, The first thing we'll need to do is Partition a space on your Hard Drive. In my case, as I have several Partitions, I'll be Partitioning a space on the hard drive Labeled Macintosh HD, which contains OS X Mountain Lion. Basically use any hard drive(s) that you have sufficient space on. I'll be creating a partition of 30 Giga Bytes for Mavericks. So to do this, we'll need to launch the Disk Utility Program, click LaunchPad and in the Other Folder click the Disk Utility Icon. Once launched, click the Main Hard Drive for the Mac. Now click the Partition Tab, now enter a value or drag the re-size control that you want the Macintosh HD to have, since I want 30 GB for OS X Mavericks, I find it easier to just subtract that amount from the Macintosh HD. Once done, click Apply, then the Partition Button if you are sure then Your Admin Details to confirm. This took about 15 section. Next we need to initialize or prepare the 30 Giga Bytes partition for OS X Mavericks, to do this click on the Plus button here and choose an appropriate name instead of the default, we'll name it appropriately as Mavericks HD. Now click the Apply button and like before click partition and then enter your Admin Details. Next, we need to Install OS X Mavericks. If you've downloaded it, it should b in the Applications Folder. Double click the Install OS X 10.9 icon to launch the install process then click continue to begin the installation. After agreeing to the terms, click the Show All Disks... Button, then navigate to the just created Mavericks HD icon. Click once to select it then the Install Button to begin, confirm by entering your Admin Details. This completes the first stage for installing OS X Mavericks, the Mac will now reboot to complete the second stage on the the install. Once completed, the Mac will always boot in OS X Mavericks by default. We'll show you ho to just this if you wish in just moment. Now, to reboot in OS X Mountain Lion, shut down the Mac, then Turn it back on with the Option key constantly pressed till you here the familiar Boing sound. Now click on the Macintosh HD Icon to boot OS X Mountain Lion. As mentioned earlier, if you wanted to change the boot sequence of OS X. Simply Launch System Preference then click the Startup Disk icon, as you can see the default OS X Mavericks HD is highlighted. To make OS X Mountain Lion as the default startup disk simply press the lock to make changes then enter your Admin Details then the Unlock Button. Now all Disks are Highlighted, click on the Macintosh HD Icon to select this as the Default startup Disk and then click on the Lock to confirm.
