Value in Healthcare – A Case for Change
Despite the tremendous progress health systems and clinical research have achieved, the quality and cost of care delivered around the world are sub-optimal and highly variable. An estimated 30% of the $7-8 trillion we spend globally on health care is considered wasted. There is growing momentum towards transforming today’s health care systems into “Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) Systems.” These patient stories contrast our current health systems with a VBHC system where all stakeholders are aligned on the definition of success: delivering outcomes that matter to patients at the lowest cost. Produced by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group - as part of the Value in Healthcare Project - this movie was premiered on January 19, 2017 in Davos, Switzerland as part of the World Economic Forum's 2017 Annual Meeting. Project leadership: Olivier Oullier, PhD, Member of the Executive Committee & Head of Strategy, Global Health and Healthcare, World Economic Forum Stefan Larsson, MD, PhD, Senior Partner and Managing Director, The Boston Consulting Group Ovid C. 2017 HCFC: Fair Economic Winds | James E. Glassman, PhD
Speaker: James E. Glassman, PhD Senior Economist & Managing Director JP Morgan Chase & Co. The 26th annual Health Care Forecast Conference will focus on the outlook for health care under a new Presidency. With Republicans in control of all three branches of government, it may seem that repealing and replacing the ACA would be an easy process. Using budget reconciliation many aspects of the ACA can be repealed. However, changing other aspects of the ACA requires 60 votes in the Senate to overcome a Democratic filibuster. Will a political compromise occur to retain some parts of the ACA and call the new bill “TrumpCare”? The Republicans also discuss changing Medicare into “premium support” and making Medicaid into a block grant program. How likely is it that any of these changes will occur? How will these changes be financed? These proposals affect the aged, those on Medicaid, those receiving ACA subsidies, as well as Governors, health care providers, and insurers. Each constituency will lobby to protect their self-interest. Will Republicans be sufficiently unified on these politically sensitive issues? States that have expanded Medicaid eligibility have made a commitment to millions of people who have enrolled in Medicaid. How well have they performed? Will they be able to keep their commitment if Medicaid is changed to a block grant program? The impact of Medicaid and the State Budget will be discussed by former State officials and independent analysts. The outlook for Covered California will also be presented. In addition to the expansion of coverage in Medicaid programs and subsidies in the exchanges, disruptive innovations in health care are likely to affect the delivery of medical services in the future. These innovations have significant implications for strategic planning, organizational structure, financial outlook and profitability. Several examples of disruptive innovations will be discussed. The final session of the conference will provide a strategic outlook on the health care market from the physician, hospital and insurer perspectives. Payment Models which impact all sectors of health care will be presented as well. How large employers view the continuing evolution of the health care market will be discussed, and this session will end with a Wall Street outlook. http://merage.uci.edu/go/hcc Video by UCI Media ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visit UCI Merage on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/ucimerage. Torger Reve | President 1997 - 2005 | BI75
Torger Reve became president of BI in 1997. He has a PhD from Northwestern University in the US and was formerly managing director of SNF (the Institute for Research in Economics and Business Administration). He has also worked as a professor at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen. Under the direction of Reve, BI has strengthened its education and research activities even further. This is reflected not least by the fact that BI was internationally accredited in 1999, when the school was awarded the European quality approval EQUIS. Reve introduced the term “bilingualism” at BI. He uses this to mean striving for a high level of quality in both research and practical teaching, and about speaking the language of academia as well as the language of business. For the first time, Reve includes in the strategy the goal of BI becoming Norway’s first private university.
