2 Year Old with Autism uses PECS to Communicate

13:52
Tessie has been learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System, also known as PECS, at school to communicate because she only says about four words verbally, and we've now been using it for two days at home and it is already life changing. We expected her to actually resist using it at home a little bit, but the exact opposite has occurred and she has been enthusiastically using it to ask for everything she can think of. She seems very excited to be able to tell us what's on her mind and what it is she wants. And I've been surprised by how often I was very wrong in my guesses as to what it was that she wanted. My Camera (and the bundle I got): https://amzn.to/2qAzu3L Welcome to Someday I'll Sleep, formerly Coffee and Cupcakes! We post family vlogs daily, about our lives and because we have two daughters on the spectrum we post quite a bit about autism! You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the city that Paul works in and where we have about a million therapy sessions each week. Paul and Cammie (the dad and mom at Coffee and Cupcakes) have 5 children. Sadie is 10, Maggie is 8, Patrick is 5, James is 3, and Tessie is now 2! PECS Phase III-Demo

04:43
This demo video shows how to use the PECS Phase III app available for download on iPad and iPad mini. Need help teaching picture discrimination in Phase III of PECS? The PECS™ Phase III App is an invaluable tool for teaching picture discrimination! The app, designed to look just like a PECS™ communication book permits a teacher to practice picture discrimination with one or several learners within a single session. Touching the correct icon results in immediate visual and auditory feedback from the device in a manner far quicker than a teacher is able to react. If the learner touches an incorrect icon, there is no significant feedback. A correct picture selection results in access to a desire item or activity! This fantastic app comes loaded with 100 Pics for PECS™ images, male and female voices that include on/off options, and a customizable library that may be loaded with an individual's own pictures from their computer or iPad®. To purchase the PECS Phase III App go to the App Store and search "PECS Phase III." Picture Card Exchange System PECS for Children with Communication Difficulty

08:08
PECS - Picture Exchange Communication System OR Picture Card Exchange System for Children The Picture Exchange Communication System, or PECS, allows people with little or no communication abilities to communicate using pictures. People using PECS are taught to approach another person and give them a picture of a desired item in exchange for that item. By doing so, the person is able to initiate communication. A child or adult with autism can use PECS to communicate a request, a thought, or anything that can reasonably be displayed or symbolized on a picture card. PECS works well in the home or in the classroom. The Six Phases of PECS are: PECS PHASE 1: Familiarize Picture cards The child with autism learns to exchange single pictures for items or activities they really want. PECS PHASE 2: Generalize Picture Cards The child with autism learn to generalize this new skill by using it in different places, with different people and across distances. They are also taught to be more persistent communicators. PECS PHASE 3: Picture Discrimination The child with autism learns to select from two or more pictures to ask for their favorite things. These are placed in a communication book, a ring binder with Velcro strips where pictures are stored and easily removed for communication. PECS PHASE 4: Sentence Formation The child with autism learns to construct simple sentences on a detachable sentence strip using an "I want" picture followed by a picture of the item being requested. PECS PHASE 5: Answering Questions The child with autism learns to use PECS to answer the question, "What do you want?" PECS PHASE 6: Commenting Now the child with autism is taught to comment in response to questions such as, What do you see?, What do you hear? and What is it? They learn to make up sentences starting with I see, I hear, I feel, It is a, etc. Let's find out more about Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) through this video. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBSCRIBE to YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/crystalottalk/ Facebook Page- https://www.facebook.com/crystalOTtalk/ Edits & Music- https://filmora.wondershare.com/

Preparing for PECS practice

03:33
PECS- Picture Exchange Communication System. I did have my doubts about using PECS for communication. I was afraid he may get comfortable with showing pictures instead of communicating verbally. I was reassured by the teachers that it will encourage verbal communication. True enough it does. The more he used it, the more he tried following the words we say aloud. Always remember to say the words he show in picture aloud so he can follow.

My PECS Video

15:35
PECS helps those who have trouble using language to communicate through the exchange of pictures. Furthermore, it is a great tool to facilitate language. The PECS I use at home is homemade and worked best for my son. However, there is a standard form of PECS, and if you are interested in learning how to implement this for your child, there are tons of resources online. This video is not a how to do that, rather it is an idea I got from watching my son and his love of watching home movies. I thought it could be an opportunity to model all the PECS in action. I believe anyone could use any pictures and videos to achieve the same thing I did. If you are using PECS, it may be an idea you would like to consider. My son loves this video, and most importantly he knows and uses all these words now. Enjoy!
