GMAT Tuesday: Profit, Cost, and Revenue Terms

08:00
The GMAT covers lots of different topics in its reading comprehension and critical reasoning sections. Being familiar with the concepts covered can really make things a lot easier on test day. If you’re not already familiar with profit, cost and revenue terminology, this is the video for you. In this video you'll learn what these and more terms mean so that you won't be confused if they come up on reading comprehension passages! :) Here are the business words we'll talk about in the video. Revenue: all the money that a business takes in from its sales (or from other channels, like investments) Costs: all of the money that a business has to pay to make it run Profit: this is equal to the revenue minus the cost. So profit is the money that a business has left after covering all of its costs. Operating at a loss: when a company's profit is negative, it is spending more money than it's earning, and we can say that it is operating at a loss. Strategic loss: when companies first go into business, they take strategic losses to invest in the future and set up their business. Gross: means total. So if we say "gross costs," this refers to all of the costs, without taking out any taxes or other costs. Per item: we can refer to cost and profit per item. "Per item cost" refers to how much the cost is for each item that the company is producing or selling. The "per item profit" is the profit the company makes for each item it sells. Non-profit: a non-profit is a company that is focused on charitable work, and doesn't necessarily try to make a profit. Any profits that the company does make get reinvested into the company. For more on profit and non-profits, check out: http://magoosh.com/gmat/2013/profit-and-nonprofits-on-the-gmat/ Check out hundreds of practice questions and video lessons to help you prep for the GMAT at http://gmat.magoosh.com

5 commonly confused word pairs in English. - English Grammar lesson

07:05
Here are five of the most commonly confused English word pairs. They have been chosen especially for ESL learners. The list is not complete, if you have any commonly confused words that you feel should be included in future lessons, write them in the comments. Accept and Except Accept Accept is a verb that means "to receive, admit, regard as true, say yes." I can't accept this gift. He was accepted to Harvard. Except Except is a preposition that means "excluding." He bought a gift for everyone except me. I know everyone here except the children. Desert and Dessert Desert The word desert can be an adjective or a noun. It has the following meanings: The plants and animals possess special features which allow them to cope with the desert conditions. Desert is an adjective in this example. An ice desert is defined as a polar area that supports little or no vegetation and that is permanently covered by snow and ice. (Desert is a noun in this example. Dessert A dessert is typically the final course of a meal. It is usually sweet e.g., ice cream, cake, pudding. Would you like to see the dessert menu? Advise and Advise Advice The word advice is a noun meaning a suggestion for a beneficial course of action. Take my advice. I don't use it anyway. He who can take advice is sometimes superior to him who can give it. Many receive advice, but only the wise profit from it. Advise The word advise is a verb meaning to give advice. It rhymes with prize. To advise can also mean to notify e.g., I advised him I was leaving. I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it. The rich are always advising the poor, but the poor seldom return the compliment. Attach yourself to those who advise you rather than praise you. Principal and Principle Principal In its most common role, principal is an adjective meaning main or key. Examples: The principal objective is to make a profit. The adjective principal modifies the noun objective. principal = main or key The inspector highlighted my principal concern in his opening sentence. principal = main or key The word principal can also be noun mean head or chief. It is commonly used to denote head teacher in the US. Here comes the principal. principal = head teacher The allegations against the former principal were that he not only allowed the cage fights to take place, but he also he egged on the participants. Principle The word principle is a noun. It has a range of meanings, including rule, belief, tenet and theory. In general, principle offers the idea of general law or code of conduct. No! It is against my principles! That is a great idea in principle. Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. You could strengthen your argument by appealing to more general principles. There and Their Their Their is used to show possession. It is just like my, your, his, her, its, and our. Here is a little trick: use the word our instead of their. If the sentence still makes sense, then their is almost certainly correct. This trick works because our and their are both possessives used for plurals. Examples: Can you show the guests to their cabins? "Can you show the guests to our cabins" sounds ok; their is correct I have seen their footprints before. "I have seen our footprints before." sounds ok; their is correct There The word there is similar to the word here in that it represents a place. It has two main uses: 1. it is a specified place -like in the first example below, and 2. it is an unspecified place -like in the second example. Also, like in the second and third examples, the word there can be used to show that something exists. Examples: The Germans are over there. specified place There are two apples. unspecified place - two apples exist There are two apples left in the fruit bowl. two apples exist; place specified later in the sentence - i.e., in the fruit bowl

English Vocabulary for Business and Work – In The Red

02:05
If you would like to practice using the phrase In the Red try using it in a sentence in the comment section. I will give grammar corrections and let you know if you are using the business expression In the Red correctly. Thanks for watching and check out our homepage for more easy lessons that will improve your business English : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-9HlmEoeMxTs3jchKt73BQ This video is dedicated to a phrase you never want to hear if you are a CEO in the red. It means that you have lost money or have a negative balance with the bank. If a company says they are “in the red”, it means that their costs were higher than their sales for a certain amount of time like a quarter or a year. I should point out that the opposite of in the red is in the black but we will come back to that later. EXAMPLES : For consumers, in the red just means that you spent more money than you earned at work. If you had an unlucky month you might say something like “the day after I bought my new winter jacket I got into a car accident. Plus I still have to do all of my Christmas shopping, so I will be in the red this month.” If you are an investor, these are three words you never want to hear about a company you have put money in. A nightmare situation would be something like “if they don’t make a profit this will be their third straight quarter in the red and they will probably go bankrupt.” As I mentioned earlier the opposite of in the red is in the black and it means that you made a profit, even if it was just a small one. For example “We are not going to make as much profit as we did last year, so I just hope we stay in the black.” Thanks for watching this video and if you would like to learn more English expressions related to business, check out some of the other lessons in this playlist. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-9HlmEoeMxTs3jchKt73BQ Our business English videos are designed to help you take you career to the next level. Meet Curtis "Wall Street" Carroll: A Finance Prophet Currently Serving Life

48:48
"Financial literacy is one of the biggest issues that plague our society. 90% of crimes committed are money related, yet only 1% of the programs that cater to people in prison and out deal with finance. I am here to be a solution for that, at least from my perspective." Known as the "Oracle of San Quentin", Curtis Caroll was convicted of murder/robbery 20 years ago and was sentenced to 54 years to life behind bars at an age when most of us were busy going on awkward dates as we attempted to navigate high school. Curtis grew up in what can be considered ground zero of the crack epidemic; Oakland, California. Carroll's desire to change his circumstance forced him to educate himself and at the same time awakened a conscious he long ago buried under multiple rap sheets as a youth.  Carroll now sees his life as an opportunity to teach financial literacy the masses, attributing crime, or the motive behind it, directly to the disconnect between financial security and most people. He compares finance to a soap opera in that he attempts to find a narrative to which people are emotionally connected to, and determines his move based on that. Salute to Curtis Carroll and Sway for an important interview. Watch above. Source: Sway Calloway - "The Last Mile Radio"

One Punch, 99 Years in Prison

09:04
James Ward, aged 22, was given a 10 month sentence for causing actual bodily harm to his Dad in a fight over a dog. 12 years later James is still in prison after being given a highly controversial Indefinite Imprisonment for Public Protection sentence (IPP) having set fire to the bed in his cell. VICE follow the lives of April, his distraught sister, who has campaigned tirelessly for his release and the rest of the family in the final 6 weeks before James' possible release date. With previous potential releases failing to materialise, the family are unsure whether they will ever see James out of prison again. As the family describe what feels like their own sentences waiting for James’ release, VICE learns of the effect that the IPP sentence has had on both the prosecuted and their families. With IPP sentences no longer being used, James is one of the last people to face spending the rest of their life on parole with the threat of jail hanging constantly over them. Freeway Ricky: I Was Making $200K a Day Profit Selling Cocaine

07:08
http://www.vladtv.com - Freeway Ricky spoke exclusively with VladTV about what it was like being one of the biggest drug dealers in the 1980s, including gifting people in need with thousands every day, and rarely being mistaken for a drug dealer. It seems that everyone knows that Ricky was a drug dealer, the California native revealed that no one ever looked at him and believed he was involved in dealing during his height. He explained that he wasn't interested in the fancy cars, jewelry, or the flashy things in life, so a lot of people mistook him as an employee of a dealer, not the main man. While Ricky isn't a flashy man, that didn't hold him back from handing out an average of $40,000 a day to people who were in need or down on their luck. He also revealed that he was worth around $10 million at the height of his operation, which you can hear more about in the above clip.

Writing Skills: The Paragraph

14:33
http://www.engvid.com The paragraph is the most important unit of a well-written essay. The paragraph has a specific structure and standards that make it effective and enjoyable to read. In this writing lesson we will look at how to construct good paragraphs and improve writing with better flow and clarity. After the lesson, take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/writing-skills-paragraph/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about the paragraph. It's a writing lesson, and I want to show people what a paragraph is and how to construct one, what to do, what not to do so you can write very clear, very tight paragraphs. This is especially important for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students but everybody has to follow the exact same rules. Now before I even begin, I must say that I'm talking mostly about academic writing or even business writing. Creative writing like novels or short stories, anything fiction, you can do anything you want. Only always remember: somebody has to read what you wrote so it has to be clear. But academic essays, for example, certain rules you have to follow; you have to be very careful about them. So let's begin. In terms of like the actual way a paragraph looks: you have to indent or skip a line. So let me just make sure you understand what an indent is. This is an indent, the first line a little bit pushed in or you can make sure you skip a line between paragraphs. But don't do both. If you skip a line, don't indent. Okay? That's the main thing. Now, that's in terms of the way it looks. In terms of content -- and this, I can't stress this enough -- very, very, very important: one central idea in one paragraph. Okay? I've seen many people, I've seen many essays where you start a paragraph talking about one thing, and then you go off on a tangent and talk about something completely unrelated. So for example: if you start a paragraph and you're talking about apples, continue to talk about apples. If you go to oranges, that's maybe okay because you're still talking about fruit. But if you start with apples, go to oranges, go to bananas, and then end up with monkeys in space there's a bit of a problem; the reader has no idea what you're talking about. One paragraph, one central idea. Now, make sure that you tell the reader what this central idea is. This is your thesis statement. Okay? It's a very general sentence. All it does is introduce the topic of the paragraph, nothing else. All the details comes after. So speaking of details, we'll talk about details in detail, but all other ideas, all the other sentences, all your sentences with the details must directly relate back to the main idea. So let's say here is your thesis statement; very general, every sentence after must relate back to that thesis statement. Okay? You can't go off to another idea. Everything must support this, must talk about the same topic. Very important. Okay? How long should your paragraph be? Technically, a paragraph could be one sentence, but in an academic essay that rarely happens. But it could be any length you want, as long as you're still on that one topic, as long as you still have things to write and things to say about that topic, say it. If you have four sentences, fine; if you have 10 sentences, also okay. Again, for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students: four, five sentences should be your limit. You can't be too long because you don't have time and you're going to start making mistakes. So now, the details. Very important to have lots of details. Why is this topic important to your overall idea of your essay? Not only tell me what is the topic, what is the thesis statement of the paragraph, make sure you explain to me why this is important to the general idea of the essay. Give me your reasons. Now, why is it important? And then reasons, why you think what you're saying supports this idea. Examples, always use examples because giving me the reasons is okay; examples make me see exactly what you're trying to say. Very easy for me to understand what you're trying to say. Now, in terms of flow, in terms of the way the reader can approach the paragraph, you have to have bridges. What is, what do bridges mean? Basically, when you have one idea in this sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence. Every sentence must have a link to the next sentence. This creates flow, makes it much easier to read and understand, and it keeps you on the one topic. Now, key terms. If you're talking about something specific and you have to use a key term, use it as many times as you need to. Otherwise, avoid repetition. Try not to use the same word more than once in one paragraph. Okay? For example: if you're using the word "moreover" in the paragraph, don't use it, don't use "moreover" again -- use "in addition to", use "furthermore", "another", etc. Try to avoid using one word more than once, especially in the same paragraph.

Your Non-Profit MUST learn that "Non Profit" is just a tax status

04:34
Hank Yuloff of http://www.YuloffCreative.com discusses the mind shift that Non-Profits must make in order to improve their bottom line on the INCOME side of the ledger so that they can do more good on the EXPENSE side of the ledger. This video will either excite a non-profit with a new way of doing business or will piss them off entirely. If you 'get it' Hank invites you to connect with him and his wife Sharyn Yuloff for a free 30-minute "Get Focused" phone call. Sign up at http://www.FreeMarketingConsultation.com If it pisses you off.... sorry I need to have a conversation with my friends in the non-profit world. It may not be pleasant to hear but someone has to speak truth to your power. This conversation really began many years ago when I began attending chamber of commerce networking breakfasts to promote my marketing business. At an event like that, you are supposed to create and develop relationships. The way you can build those relationships is to not only be on the lookout for customers, but, and here is an important thing, to be on the lookout for vendors that you can buy from and connections that you can make betweDo you want to en other attendees. The most successful of us at that game were the ones who were able to master that second part of the networking game. The companies who were the worst at this game, invariably, were the non-profits. And with that last sentence, I just lost a bunch of the most important readers of this blog, the non-profits. Want to know why? Because they are answering me with the sentence, “But we are a non-profit, we don’t have the budget to buy things from you for-profit businesses.” I’m going to get on my soapbox here for a moment when I say “Are you freakin’ kidding me? WAKE THE HECK UP!” Here are my 4 POINTS to back up this diatribe to try and wake up non-profits. 1. Non-profits have to operate their business, which means they need products. These products include everything from office supplies to furniture to alarm systems. 2. Non-profits also need services. These services include everything from buying insurance, to accounting and graphic arts. 3. Non-profits can get involved in events other than their own. 4. Non-profits tax status is just that, a tax status. It does not mean they cannot make money or have a teeny tiny budget. You may make money and spend that money to improve your surroundings. Part of the challenge is that non-profits send people out into the community who, as the Eagles sing in Hotel California, are programed to receive. This means that they do not have any authority to put money into the community, just to check money OUT of it. Yes, Miss Non-profit executive who is pretty pissed at me right now. You are different. But… if you are willing to listen to these 3 questions and my answer, I may be able to assist you to reach higher levels than you have previously. Do you want to be more successful? Do you want to raise more money? Do you want to do more good for your community? I have good news, I have the answer for you to make this happen for your non-profit. Let me show you how. Most of you non-profits send your people into the world to walk about with your hand out like that scene from Oliver where Mark Lester holds out his hand and says “May I have some more, sir?” Non-profits are begging for table scraps. So, you say, what SHOULD we be doing? We are just a non-profit. One word: Militant You have to be militant. You have to go into those meetings with your hand UP not out. You have to hold your hand up and have that sheet of paper (real or figurative, your choice) with all the things you do in the community and say “HEY! Without US… all these things are not getting done I your community.” Make people feel it. Make people relate to it. Make people know that when they get on your band wagon, they are doing great things within their community. Here is the other side of it. It is my opinion that each business owner must, MUST find at least one non-profit and get involved. We have to find a cause and support it. What non-profits need to do it share that feeling. Get business owners in your area to buy into it. They may not buy into YOUR non-profit, but when you are militantly sharing what YOU do for the community, you will get more than your share. OK. I am stepping down from my soapbox now. If you want help becoming militant, I strongly suggest you sign up for a free 30-minute Get Focused Call at www. Free Marketing Consultation .com Sharyn has a master’s degree in non-profit management and between the two of us have sat on several boards of directors of non-profits. This year we have been covering a series of articles exposing different ways drug and insurance companies have been making profits that aren’t necessarily needed. We’ve covered stories where Big Pharma was combining two over the counter drugs and up charging thousands of dollars to insurance companies, and how millions of dollars are wasted when drugs are simply thrown away due to questionable drug expiration dates. Investigative journalist Marshall Allen discuss his latest piece on how drug companies are making a profit over eye drop designs with Ring of Fire’s Sam Seder. Ring of Fire needs your help! For-Profit Probation Companies Exploit Poorest Americans

03:37
The cost of private probation supervision disproportionately harms the poor, often criminalizing a person’s inability to pay their probation fees and court costs, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. The 81-page report, “‘Set up to Fail’: The Impact of Offender-Funded Private Probation on the Poor,” documents private probation company practices in Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee. These states allow private companies to supervise probation for minor crimes, including misdemeanors and criminal traffic offenses. Individuals pay their probation fees directly to the company. But many courts fail to recognize that when an individual is living in poverty, the fees force them to sacrifice basic needs, such as food, housing, and transportation, to pay the probation company. When an individual cannot afford payments, they can face arrest, extended probation, or even prison.

This Speech Will Change Your Life | Carl Sagan

03:47
:Subscribe: https://goo.gl/YSY9MP :Brought to you by: http://www.wordporn.com :Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifeofspiro :Transcript: From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known. :Speaker: Carl Sagan :Copyright Disclaimer: Word Porn does not own the rights to these video clips.
