Teaching writing effectively to elementary and secondary students is imperative to helping them improve writing skills, which in turn helps students to be successful both inside and outside of the classroom. Effective writing is a vital component of literacy development and provides students a means of communicating their thoughts and ideas with others clearly. Writing also provides students with the skills to analyze texts and other information to clarify their own thoughts. This video provides a brief discussion of the importance of teaching students to be effective writers and shares research-based practices based from IES practice guides and the “Instructional Strategies for Teaching Writing to Elementary Students” infographic. This video was prepared for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) under Contract ED-IES-17-C-0011 by Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southeast at FSU. The content of the publication does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of IES or the U.S. Department of Education, nor does mention of trade names, commercial products, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.

During the writing block, the teacher meets with students to check for under- standing and to provide differentiated support to move their learning forward. Part of the dialogue is devoted to developing the student's understanding of himself/herself as a writer. The teacher offers a choice of strategies the writer might consider trying and debriefs with students what he/she perceives to be their needs. Students monitor their progress since the last conference and help to determine next steps. Conversations are respectful and are focused on improving the student's writing. • What did you notice about the teacher's strategies that you might try with your students? • What did you notice about the students' behaviour during the conference that reflected essential prior learning or experiences? How might this knowledge of important prior learning impact on your instructional decisions? "Learners need information and guidance in order to plan next steps in their learning. Teachers should: pinpoint the learner's strengths and advise on how to develop them; be clear and constructive about any weaknesses and how they might be addressed; provide opportunities for learners to improve upon their work." (Assessment Reform Group, 2002, p. 2)

Teaching strategies for writing is a series of six books with the explicit, overarching aim of teaching the skills and strategies required to improve the clarity, correctness and richness of children’s writing. Within the series, they are taught to recognise, choose and use specific strategies. As in the series Teaching comprehension strategies, the focus is on the process, rather than on practising, in this instance, specific text types. To this end, priority is given to improving writing at the sentence level. There is a strong hands-on emphasis; that is, there is an expectation that the children will write to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. Unlike many other writing workbooks, the desired outcome is to have the learners structuring correct, enriched sentences to more clearly convey ideas and information. The ultimate goal is for them to produce clear, precise writing for a specific purpose and to understand that proofreading and editing is an integral part of the writing process.

http://www.timbedley.com Video from a lesson in my 4th 5th combo class. Here's the details... I spend a great deal of time (average 90 minutes per week) engaging my students in critical thinking discussions on peer writing samples. I train my students to do paired peer reviews. I lead discussions on student writing that is placed under my document camera. I constantly push my students to get more involved in thinking critically about writing. They write almost daily. So at this point, I asked my students to put their thoughts down on paper. First, I had them try doing a written peer review on their own. Then, I made a video where I modeled the process for them. The students watched this video for homework on Monday night. Then, on Tuesday night, I gave them all a copy (with the student name removed) of one student's essay about his mom. The kids returned their critiques on Wednesday, and that's what you are watching here. The quality of the critiques went through the roof after watching my video. On Wednesday, my students got into groups of 3 and shared their critiques (the Tuesday night homework.) They were to discuss their observations and try to agree on their conclusions. Just before I began shooting this video, the students were told to agree on the most important compliment they could pay the author of this essay. They were also told to agree on the most important suggestion they would give the author. Then, all the students met at the floor to share their findings. That discussion is what you see on this video. This video was filmed on my iPhone, so the quality isn't the greatest.
