Learning a foreign language at four takes a lot less effort than learning one at forty. The same holds true with managing your money. I can tell you this from personal experience. I grew up in a home where the value of money was a frequent topic of conversation. Today, I teach people how to get out of debt and build wealth with my dad, Dave Ramsey. Growing up in my parents’ home, I learned a few things about kids and money. Here are three: One: Put your kids to work. It’s very important that your kids understand that money comes from work – not from mom and dad’s wallet. As soon as your children can grasp the concept of cause and effect — and that happens at a very young age — you can start teaching them about the work/money connection. Have them clean the playroom, take out the trash, put away their laundry – there are a million things they can do. Just make sure it’s age appropriate. Don’t have your five year-old mow the lawn. And pay them for some of the work they do. Let your kids know that in the real world you get paid only when you work. And it’s with the money made from work that you can buy the things you want. When children work for things they want to buy, the purchase feels like an accomplishment, not an entitlement. You’re sending the opposite message when you just hand your kids a $20 bill when they ask for it, or give them an allowance for essentially breathing. Of course, not everything your child decides to buy will be a smart purchase. And that brings us to… Lesson Number Two: Let your kids make mistakes with their money. Many adults make expensive mistakes because, as kids, they were never allowed to make small, inexpensive ones. Tears now will save a lot of tears later. When I was young, my parents took our family to Opryland Theme Park in Nashville. Dad and Mom had one simple rule: If you want to play the carnival games, you have to spend your own money. Of course, I ran to the first game near the entrance, slapped some cash on the table, and took my turn. I lost. So I put down more money. And I lost again — and again. And then came the terrible moment when I reached into my pocket and found nothing but lint. We had a whole day at Opryland ahead of us and I had blown through my cash! I ran back to Mom and Dad and begged them for more money and promised I’d pay them back. What Dad said has stuck with me ever since: “Rachel, when the money’s gone, it’s gone.” Your children are going to make some dumb choices. They’ll waste money on stuff that a week later they wish they had never bought. And as their parent, there are times you need to let them make that mistake and suffer the consequences. That’s how they learn. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/how-raise-kids-who-are-smart-about-money

Hello & Welcome to another Informative & helpful Video from Kidi Kingdom Child Care Centre. Today we are going to explain how to teach children, the value of money. Have you ever heard the saying, or said the words “money does not grow on trees” ? As a parent, I have said these words many times to my own children, and as a parent and an educator, I believe it important to start early, and teach the children the value of money. Some things that we do in the Pre-Prep room to develop children’s sense of money are: Play Games -: Introduce a grocery shop into our ‘home corner’ area. Where we label recyclable items with prices (e.g. milk containers, juice boxes, etc). We make “play” money with the children and distribute for purchase of goods in the grocery shop. We also, Sell our produce grown from our vegetable garden – create a stall where parents / carers make gold coin donations for purchase of fresh grown produce. It’s important to teach children needs, wants, and desires. Encourage children to save their money for something of Interest. Then Set goals, and work towards them. Other things that you could do at home to extend their understandings include: Open a bank account for your child, & when the statement arrives, let them open the mail, and get excited about seeing how much money they have in the bank. Buy a piggy bank – give children spare change to fill their piggy bank. Use regular shopping trips as opportunities to teach children the value of money. I trust this video has been informative, and if you have any questions, please feel free to call the centre and speak to one of our friendly & helpful staff. Teaching Children About the Value of Money
From VOA Learning English, this is the Economics Report in Special English. Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose of an allowance is to teach children about money. Children can learn how to manage money, especially at an early age, when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance. Parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics. Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works. Allowances give children a chance to experience the things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save and maybe even invest it.Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice: you have to cut costs and plan for the future. HOW TO TEACH YOUR KIDS THE VALUE OF MONEY There are countless articles about teaching kids how to spend an allowance. Why do we have to teach them how to spend. What about using money as a tool to grow and invest, or at least save correctly. I don't have all the answers on this one, but I do know I don't want my kids thinking money is stricly to be used to consume more toys and take care of their impulse buying. People are addicted to consuming, and if we did a better job teaching, maybe about stocks, real estate, silver, and gold, etc. they would not continue the poor behavior of spending money so easily.

Put 'em in your pocket! Join our character Gerry in his hometown by the sea as he investigates the values of common US coins. Gerry buys ice cream, dill pickles, and even describes a little bit about the history of the presidents whose faces adorn US coins! LYRICS: US Coins One penny is worth one cent; one nickel's worth five of them. One dime has a value of ten; one quarter's worth twenty-five cents. Five pennies make a nickel (in cents, it's worth five). Two nickels make ten cents (that means they're worth a dime). A quarter's twenty-five pennies, but let's make it shorter... two dimes and a nickel also equal a quarter. I bought one delicious dill pickle for two dimes, a quarter, and a nickel. To find out how much I spent, I counted them up cent by cent. I started with the quarter; it was worth twenty-five cents. Each dime was worth ten, so I added both of them; got thirty-five, forty-five, and then there was a nickel... I added five, and paid fifty cents for the pickle. (Chorus) I bought an ice cream in the summertime with four pennies, three quarters, and a dime. The ice cream lady looked in silence, and then she counted up my cents. She counted the three quarters - twenty-five, fifty, seventy-five - then she added the dime. The ten cents made eighty-five, and the four pennies left made it eighty-nine. So it was eighty-nine cents for the ice cream; I ate until my shirt popped at the seam! (Chorus) On the penny is the sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln; he wrote The Gettysburg Address and The Emancipation Proclamation. The third president, Thomas Jefferson, is on the nickel (or five cents); he was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. The dime has Franklin Delano Roosevelt, president thirty-two; he instituted The New Deal and led America through World War II. Finally, on the quarter is the first president, George Washington; he was the Commander-in-Chief during the American Revolution. (Chorus) Five pennies make a nickel (in cents, it's worth five). Two nickels make ten cents (that means they're worth a dime). A quarter's twenty- five pennies, but let's make it shorter... two dimes and a nickel also equal a quarter. This video addresses the following Common Core Standards: 2.MD.C.8 - Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have? http://www.NUMBEROCK.com is a provider of educational videos for kids which was founded by an innovative 5th Grade teacher who envisioned a new kind of classroom where students got energized for math class. Parents of his students even noticed their children singing mathematics songs around the dinner table well beyond school hours. Seeing his students so enthusiastic when it was time for math was welcome, to say the least! But the epiphanous moment was when students were singing math songs all-day long like they were in the American Top 40! We'll be releasing new songs and videos regularly until eventually addressing all the math skills and concepts that a Common Core Curriculum demands from 1st Grade to 2nd Grade, and even 5th Grade to 6th Grade. Our main goal is to make teaching and learning math more fun and more interactive. SchoolHouse Rock! has done this in other subjects for us in the previous generations.

Teaching Kids the Value of Money
Teaching children about money can be tricky, especially when talking to younger children. But it's never too early to start. It's important that children understand what money is, how it's earned, how's it's spent, and how to use it wisely. Financial literacy is an often overlooked subject in our public school systems, so, as parents, it's up to us to teach our children the basics of money management. Our Social Media Coordinator, Carly Cherry kicks off this 3-part "kids and money" series with part 1, Teaching Kids the Value of Money. Transcription: Welcome to Personal Finance 120 – information for managing your financial life in about 2 minutes. I’m Carly Cherry with Cambridge Credit Counseling. Today we’re going to discuss some of the best ways to teach your children about money. (On-screen graphic: What is money, and what does it do?) It’s never too early to start teaching, but if your child is very young, you may need to explain what money is. If the easiest way is to say that you give money to the cashier and they give you things, that’s fine. The concept of value can be taught through role-playing: use small bills and let your child take turns as customer and cashier, counting out the amount of each purchase. (On-screen graphic: How do you earn money?) Now you can begin to explain how money is earned. You can demonstrate this by having your child do small chores they don’t usually do, like setting the table or taking out the trash, and “paying” them a small amount of money for each task. It’s better to avoid paying for grades or behavior, which are expected to be good, but that rule isn’t set in stone. You want to avoid paying an allowance for chores your child already does. You don’t want them refusing to do chores because they think they have enough spending money at that particular moment. (On-screen graphic: How to use money wisely.) This next step is hard for some parents, but try and give your child the opportunity to spend their own money. Let them decide what’s worth their money and what isn’t. They’ll sometimes make decisions they regret, so don’t miss out on that teachable moment. Buyer’s remorse is one of many consequences they need to understand. (On-screen graphic: Needs vs. Wants) Identifying the differences between wants and needs is as challenging for children as it is for many adults. There are many things that adults find hard to cut out of their budget because they enjoy it too much. To introduce this concept of needs and wants, as you make your way through the grocery store, ask your child whether the family needs an item, or simply wants it. Explain to them that milk is something we need to be healthy, while cookies are something we don’t really need. (On-screen graphic: Borrowing Money: Credit and Debt) Teaching the concept of credit can derail your efforts if you’re not careful. Next time you’re in a store and you know your child doesn’t have their allowance with them - or when they’ve already spent it - if it’s reasonable, offer to let them borrow the money from you. Afterward, make sure they pay you back as soon as they have the money available. You don’t want them thinking you have a limitless supply of money they can tap into at any time.

Smart Money, Smart Kids by Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze at Gateway Church
The Chinese community in particular, and generally Asian parents have taught their children from an early age from generation to generation the importance and the value of money; to manage whatever wealth - money, stocks, properties and business wisely, that they have built up over a long period of time. And to be content and prudent. Parents would teach their children never to buy something they cannot afford or to buy on credit. They know this principle - "The rich rule over the poor; And the borrower is a slave to the lender." (Proverb 22:7). To spent wisely is to save for the "rainy days" so that they could pass-it-on to the next generation - to their children's children. A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous. (Proverb 13:22) "Godliness with contentment is great gain"... these are biblical principles that have proven again and again to be true to those who practice them. Also, there is no substitute to "hard work". Wealth is given to the prudent. 'Money gained by cheating (people) will soon be gone. Money earned through hard work will grow and grow'. (Pro 13:11 - ERV). 'Go to the ant, you hater of work; learn from her ways and be wise': (Proverb 6:6). 'She store food during summer. So when the winter comes, there is plenty to eat.' (Proverb 6:8). The saying is true: "A man with an experience is not at the mercy of a man with an opinion". Countries like China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, South Korea... and the Jews who practice this principle in God's laws; these are countries that have huge foreign reserves. Their surplus records are clearly evident. Even in countries where there are large Chinese or Asian communities, those countries are blessed because there are huge amount of savings by these communities of people and more importantly, they are "debt free". Teaching Kids About Money!
Have no clue how to teach your kids about money, how to save money or how to spend money? Never fear! I’m sharing my tips on how to teach kids about money today in this fun little video. Your kids might collect money from Birthdays, Christmas and other holidays. Until they learn what it is like to not have any money (and want to buy things), they don't really learn how to save or how to spend wisely. After this video, Devyn spent the rest of her money on a bike. And even though Rockwell's Coinstar balance was only $1.35, he had dollars already in his ziploc bag. He spent the rest of his money on a toddler bike too. Ever since they ran out of money, they've asked for us to buy things. We've had to tell them "no" and encouraged them to do chores to earn money for the things they want. It's totally worked! Oh- and by the way- MOST of the Furniture & Decor from this video is actually from IKEA! No joke! http://freebies2deals.com/IKEADecor They have lots of sales going on right now.
