Thesis Writing for Business Students: Strategies How to create strategies for your case study thesis With the SWOT analysis done, it is now time to come up with strategies for dealing with the company’s key issue. The types strategies that you recommend should be apparent from your SWOT analysis. Students usually look into: revenue and costs pricing marketing positioning growth opportunities So taking a look at this SWOT analysis, strategies that are worth looking into include: Positioning Revenue diversification Partnership with the neighboring Ski Resort Artificial Snow Production Energy Costs and opportunities for saving Considered this and decided to look further into the strategies by creating the following sections: Artificial Snow Production: We discussed how Artificial Snow is used at ski resorts in Tirol in general and at the case study ski resort. Based on the three climate change scenarios we created in our external analysis (that is conservative, moderate and extreme) we calculated the feasibility and costs of creating artificial snow. It turns out that there are limitations to the production of snow in terms of temperature, time it takes to produce and costs. Energy Costs: As one of the biggest costs, it was worth looking into whether it was possible to save. It turns out, there was a lot of opportunity to save! We were able to calculate total cost savings. Pricing Strategies: We wanted to look into whether it was possible to shift customer behavior to fit with the changes in snow conditions. We discussed different types of ski passes and pricing. For example, you could offer lower pricing during bad snow conditions and higher pricing when snow conditions were good. If you look into pricing strategies, definitely look at the price elasticity of the customer (you can create a question in your customer survey to determine it). This will help guide your pricing strategy discussion. Positioning was definitely one of the biggest opportunities for the Ski Resort and was relatively long hanging fruit. We suggested that they position themselves as an eco-friendly resort. There is already a good infrastructure in Austria for environmental friendliness, so it wouldn’t be a hard or expensive step to take. Plus, the energy saving strategy plays well with the positioning strategy of being eco-friendly. If you choose to look at positioning in your own thesis, I can recommend using Bowman’s Strategic Positioning Clock. Growth Strategies: This was especially interesting in relation to the partnership opportunity with the neighboring ski resort. By building a lift between the two ski resorts, would make the resort more attractive to skiers as the area would grow more than double in size. This was just one of several growth strategies we looked into. If you want to look into growth strategies for your case study company, I definitely recommend using Ansoff’s Growth Matrix. So just to sum up. For the strategy section, look at your SWOT analysis to get inspiration. When you do write your strategy section, keep in mind that this is not your recommendation section. This is a section that is purely a discussion of possible strategies, so do not come to any conclusions in this section. Authors: Panagiotis Adamopoulos, Vilma Todri Abstract: This paper studies a novel social media venture and seeks to understand the effectiveness of marketing strategies in social media platforms by evaluating their impact on participating brands and organizations. We use a real-world data set and employ a promising research approach combining econometric with predictive modeling techniques in a causal estimation framework that allows for more accurate counterfactuals. Based on the results of the presented analysis and focusing on the long-term business value of marketing strategies in social media, we find that promotional events leveraging implicit or explicit advocacy in social media platforms result in significant abnormal returns for the participating brand, in terms of expanding the social media fan base of the firm. The effect is also economically significant as it corresponds to an increase of several thousand additional new followers per day for an average size brand. We also precisely quantify the impact of various promotion characteristics and demonstrate what types of promotions are more effective and for which brands, while suggesting specific tactical strategies. For instance, despite the competition for consumers' attention, brands and marketers should broadcast marketing messages on social networks during the time of peak usage in order to maximize their returns. Overall, we provide actionable insights with major implications for firms and social media platforms and contribute to the related literature as we discover new rich findings enabled by the employed causal estimation framework. Abstract: Purpose -- This thesis examines to what extent disclosing product placement influences the brand awareness, the attitude toward the brand and purchase intention of the placed products. Design/methodology/approach -- In a unique cooperation with the largest commercial broadcaster of the county an online experiment has been carried out, using a 2 (product placement disclosure present vs. product placement disclosure absent) experimental design. A non-student sample, a real program and a real product placement were used. Furthermore, the legislation was followed into greatest detail. Findings -- Disclosing product placement has been found to positively influence the effectiveness of product placement as an advertising mechanism. However, this positive effect is restricted to brand recall only. Attitude toward the brand and purchase intention did not differ significantly between the disclosure and no-disclosure condition. Practical implications -- Two main practical implications stem from this research. Firstly, for the Government it is advised to alter the regulations, as this regulation is expected to benefit advertisers instead of protect consumers. Increasing disclosure times might be a good strategy. Secondly, for advertisers, there is no reason to believe that the change in regulations will have negative consequences. Moreover, when advertisers use product placements as a tool for the creation of brand awareness, particularly brand recall, product placement might be even more effective than before. Originality/value -- To the best of our knowledge no study has investigated the effect of this type of product placement disclosure and product placement on its effectiveness in television shows. Moreover, since the (European) Government has made it mandatory for implementing product placement as an advertising instrument, the findings of this research can be considered of considerable value. Finally, this is the first study to examine the influence of disclosing product placement on behavioral outcomes, in this case purchase intention. Beth Karlin Candidate for Ph.D. in Social Ecology Ph.D. Dissertation Defense Wednesday, April 23rd , 2014 Social Ecology I, Room 112 1:00 - 3:00 PM Residential Energy Feedback: Research, Technology, and Potential for the Informed Home Research Summary: Scientists and elected officials agree that climate change is an issue that can no longer be ignored and residential energy use is a prime target for reducing emissions, accounting for over 20% of annual emissions. One promising strategy for promoting conservation is the provision of feedback about energy use. Feedback -- the process of giving people information about their behavior to reinforce and/or change behavior--is receiving increasing attention due to changes in technology and infrastructure that allow information to be collected, processed, and sent back to consumers quickly and cheaply. Many programs and products have emerged in recent years, demonstrating political and technical potential for wide-scale provision of energy feedback. However, past work has been critiqued for its lack of theoretical rigor; many have called for more attention to the conditions under which theories are successful in explaining conservation. This research presents an interdisciplinary, mixed methods approach to understanding the role of feedback in residential energy conservation through five distinct, yet interrelated approaches: (1) literature review and integration into a new Eco-Feedback Intervention Theory (eFIT) (2) meta-analysis of past research on residential energy feedback, (3) taxonomy of energy feedback technology, (3) mixed-methods analysis of naturalistic energy feedback users, and (4) introduction and psychometric testing of a Usability Perception Scale (UPscale). As a whole, it seeks to extend what is known about energy feedback and to make suggestions for future research and practice. While there much research addressing whether feedback works, there has been little research into the more nuanced questions of how and for whom it works best. The present research aims to address this need. Biography: Beth founded and directs the Transformational Media Lab in the Center for Unconventional Security Affairs (CUSA), where she studies the psychology of leveraging new media and technology for social impact. Current projects investigate public acceptance of technology, documentary film, and digital activism. Beth has over a dozen publications in venues ranging from Peace Studies to Persuasive Technology and lectures regularly on Transformational Media and the Psychology of Sustainability. She is active in the American Psychological Association's Division 34 (Environmental Psychology), currently serving as Treasurer and Program Chair for the 2014 Convention. Beth holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and Spanish from the University of Redlands and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from California State University, Long Beach. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies, she spent a decade working in K-12 education, holding positions as a teacher, counselor, curriculum consultant, and school administrator. After graduation, Beth will be staying at CUSA and working on the NSF-funded Flood RISE project, investigating the role of parcel-level flood modeling coupled with transformative communication strategies to improve flood resilience. Thesis Writing for Business Students: The External Analysis How to write your external analysis section The external analysis is be honest is a description and analysis of the industry of your case study company. This section plays a part in defining the scope and setting the stage of the issue in your research question. To structure this section, Porter’s Five Forces is an excellent model. It is a model to help asses the level of competition in an industry and help uncover the opportunities and threats that your case study company is facing. The theory is that there are five forces that determine the competitiveness of a market. Three are “horizontal forces”: The Threat of Substitute Products The Threat of Established Rivals The Threat of New Entrants Two are “vertical forces”: The Bargaining Power of Suppliers The Bargaining Power of Buyers Let’s take a look at the The Threat of Substitute Products first. Here the question to ask yourself is: Are there close substitutes for the product? A substitutable product for white sugar might be artificial sweetener, brown sugar, maple syrup. Note that a competitor brand of white sugar is not considered a substitute product, but a competitor product. To assess the threat of substitute products, you might consider: relative price of substitutable products the relative functionality of these products: for example - there is a clear difference in taste between honey & white sugar. What are the switching costs? If you are used to baking with white sugar, it’s cumbersome to figure out what the corresponding amount of an artificial sweetner is. That could be considered a high switching cost. How many substitute products are there? Are they easily available? Next is The Threat of Established Rivals. A rival is a close competitor. For the Ski Resort, this would be other ski resorts. The main question to ask yourself is how intense is the competition between these companies? To assess The Threat of Established Rivals you should consider: The number of companies in the industry The degree of transparency. Is it easy to see what your competitors are up to or are they super secretive like Apple? What competitive advantages are there in the industry? How heavily does marketing play into competitiveness? How does innovation play a role in the competitiveness of the industry? Third is the Threat of New Entrants. That is - how easy is it a new company to enter the industry? You should consider: Barriers to entry: Take Ski Resorts as an example. You need land on a mountain range. This is likely expensive land. The capital requirements to startup. For a ski resort, you need to buy and install lifts. That’s not cheap! Customer loyalty to established brands. How hard will it be for a new entrant to acquire market share? Economies of scale. For example, do existing companies have a cost advantage because of their scale of operation? Government Policy. Not only is the land on the mountain range expense, but it is probably also under heavy regulation. You can just build or do whatever you want there. Fourth is The Bargaining Power of Suppliers. To asses their bargaining power, you should ask yourself How easy is it for Suppliers to drive up prices? Here you should think about: What are the switching cost for the case study company to switch to another supplier? Number of suppliers in the industry: The more suppliers, the more rivalry there is between them and the lower is the bargaining power of the suppliers. Last is the Bargaining Power of Buyer. Just like Supplier Power, To help assess the power of the buyer, you should ask yourself How easy is it for buyers to drive up prices? Things you might consider include: The switching cost of the buyer and the number of competitors. In Innsbruck there are a lot of Ski Resorts and there are all easily accessible. Unless the buyer has a season pass to a specific ski resort, the switching costs are low. How expensive is it for the company to acquire a new customer? For many companies, this is question of marketing costs. The buyer has more bargaining power if it is expensive for the company to acquire a new customer. What substitute products are there? How price sensitive is the buyer?
