African American Theater in Harrisburg: Frances Ellen Watkins Harper
The need to create a space for African American actors to practice theater in Harrisburg was apparent to Sharia Benn shortly after moving to the area in 1995. At first she could not find a lot of opportunities to practice her craft, but that changed after she was cast at Open Stage in a play honoring African American History Month. Towards the end of this cycle of plays, Benn and others from the group formed the Sankofa African American Theatre Company. Benn became the co-founder and managing director of the new theater company. Sankofa’s focus is to address the African American experience and perspective. The goal is produce plays written by African American play-writes and authors while involving other cultures that have touched and influenced their community. Sharia Benn is currently portraying Frances Ellen Watkins Harper in Voices of F.E.W. A resident of York, PA in 1852, Frances E.W. Harper was a leading African American poet and abolitionist. Among her notable accomplishments, Harper was also the first black woman in history to publish a short story. Through her theatrical portrayal, Sharia Benn hopes to shed light on Frances E.W. Harper’s forgotten work. Voices of F.E.W. will be playing at Gamut Theatre on March 8th through March 10th.
